"Guillermo del Toro Reveals Test Footage From Canceled At the Mountains of Madness Film. Acclaimed director Guillermo del Toro gives fans a peek at his unmade HP Lovecraft movie, At the Mountains of Madness, in a clip posted to Instagram. Guillermo del Toro fans may never see his complete vision for an At The Mountains Of Madness film, but now they can catch a glimpse. The legendary auteur released never-before-seen test footage for the passion project on his Instagram, showcasing his work on a terrifying CGI monster. Fans reacted with mixed emotions -- while many were glad to see his vision, others mourned a movie that may never be made. Del Toro, a prolific director whose most recent works include a stop-motion Pinocchio movie and Cabinet of Curiosities, a horror anthology series, has long been interested in adapting H.P. Lovecraft's novella about a doomed expedition to Antarctica. He was attached to the project in 2011 for Universal Pictures, but the deal ultimately went south due to a dispute over its R rating. "Ultimately, I think the MPAA could rule the movie PG-13 because the movie and the book are not gory. If that is the outcome, fine," del Toro said. "....The only thing I know about Mountains is, I do not want it to be bloody, I do not want it to be crass, but I want it to be as intense as possible. And those discussions were had in the open. Everyone knew this was my position, that I knew I was asking the chance for the movie to be what it needs to be. I don’t think it’s a good idea to relinquish that on paper. [...] While the enthusiastic response on social media suggests there is an audience for the movie, del Toro's own comments after the release of Ridley Scott's Prometheus, which he said had too much in common with his story for Mountains of Madness, may mean this is all fans get. "The title itself gave me pause -- knowing that Alien was heavily influenced by Lovecraft and his novella," del Toro wrote. "...I believe I am right and if so, as a fan, I am delighted to see a new RS science fiction film, but this will probably mark a long pause -- if not the demise -- of ATMOM."
