Re: Vidya game archiving - It's a civilization-wide problem in general. A lot of people, Boomers especially, possess special knowledge that keeps important systems running. And they haven't passed it on, and the people replacing them are never taught it. So beyond just classic vidya being lost, there's a lot of technical knowledge, little hacks, and unspoken rules that are being lost too. Hopefully nothing vital, but hey.

Do any of you guys play visual novels? Erotic or non. I'm curious about the market, since there's a remarkably low barrier to entry, and the terrible looking 3D porn games on Steam all appear to be "mini games with boobs," rather than waifu simulators.

I don't know the market enough to give an answer, but most visual novels I have plays have been fine, but then again I haven't played newer ones.

Only one I have ever played is Katawa Shoujo, during a time when I was heavily depressed.
That was probably unwise.

How complicated is the average story? The one I've seen recently, which gave me the idea, was extremely simple (and poorly written), but still made a lot of money.

Yeah well, those demons are pulling overtime on me the last week or so. Ain't fun.
Wasn't that the one about the disabled girls that 4chan inspired? What was the allure, if you can recall?

generally they aren't complicated.
most of them are basically story happens, you make a choice and see how the story plays out (some of them don't even have that).
if you want to play a good story visual novel I hear Steins Gate is good (there is 2 version of it, the original and the updated version) I haven't played it myself, but I have heard nothing but praise for it.

Wasn't sure if it was 4chan inspired at the time, but yeah they were all different disabilities and stuff.
Honestly, I don't know what drew me to it. Wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot barge pole now.

Well, today was stressful. Not long after I pulled myself out of bed, drinking 3 glasses of gin with only light snacks in my stomach was a mistake, power goes out. Fairly rare these days, used to happen all the time, but they fixed the powerlines after a bad storm. Go upstairs to see what's up, fix the stove clock, all that. Hear a pounding from outside. See a young man doing something by the meter, wearing a safety vest, figured he was with the power company. Power comes back on, s'all good.
Except my computer fuggin' isn't. There's power, but nothing on screen. Spent the rest of the day, except for a brief exhausted psuedo-nap, trying to isolate what exactly was wrong. Dug out my old PC, swapped GPUs, considered rewiring the PSUs, tested 3 different monitors, sockets, on and on. Finally decide it's either the HDMI cables are all bad, even the brand new one, or another SSD has died, since the same thing happened before, or my PC is basically dead. Amazon comes through with same day delivery on some HDMI cables, and the good Lord was kind today. Screen popped right on, small mercies. Only $20 or so. So yeah, not a fun day, but I'm very grateful for how it ended.
@Maz, TX, Deano: How about you guys tell me your favorite VN that I can pick up on Steam? Ideally one that sold one, really represents the genre well.

I played Katawa Shoujou, like Maz and like Maz I was going through something at the time, but unlike Maz I actually think I'll play it again one day. I really enjoyed it. I know Fate was originally a VN. Doki Doki Literature Club I think was a VN. It might have been just a game though, but very popular.

Not even sure how only the HDMI cables could all die at the same time due to a power outage, but nonetheless good luck in bad luck.

While not available on Steam, Fate/Stay Night is a pretty good story. And an entry to a franchise most consider to be unnatural..ly large.

Damn, sorry your PC fucked you over today, glad you got it sorted though.
As for VN's.
I have only actually played the one, so I don't know any to recommend.
VN's just aren't my scene.

And, I'm done with Everspace 2. All in all, a very solid space game. It really is a bit arcadey and a lot like a looter shooter game, but the combat feels very satisfying overall. The story is so-so, okay but not outstanding, as are the characters. For the price it sells at, I can definitely recommend it. Of course buying two highest quality joysticks for EUR 1.300+ didn't exactly hurt for the experience, but the game can be played perfectly well with keyboard and mouse or a controller as well. Also, it coming out on XBOX now, IIRC and is included in the game pass for the PS5.
As for the joysticks, they really give joy with their fine control. Having so many buttons at ones disposal really did what I set out to do, i.e. never take my hands off the controllers to play. Their next project will be MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries. But for now, I need a little break from sim games and therefore will play Star Wars Jedi Survivor next. It should be patched into a playable state by now. I could also feasible finally continue my Witcher 3 Next Gen run, which stalled just before getting Ciri back. In any case, it's back to third person action adventure RPG times for the next week, where I'm still on vacation.
Also, today is my birthday. 48, quite nearby already to the dreaded "5" in front. Ah, well. I'm having fun with my life currently, I don't get to complain.

Would probably be better to see what genre you're looking for really, also only thing with getting them on Steam is they won't be the adult version, which is fine in most cases but sometimes the 18+ stuff does add to it quite a bit. But anyway, give me a genre.

My uncle is visiting, spent the afternoon and evening with him and my dad. Never thought I'd consider my teen years "the good ole' days," but he was a part of them, and in hindsight, I never realized how great that time was, compared to what comes after.
A very happy birthday, young fella! Still a fresh-faced youth, spry and full of energy!

Thank you, all! It was a very relaxed day, finishing Everspace 2 in the morning, then getting calls from friends and family during the mid-day and afternoon and then watching some videos (Witcher S3 on fast-forward, cough cough... the show has gotten really bad, IMO) in the evening.
Today I bought four new pairs of pants, due to my diet working out so well. About ten old jeans and seven belts now go into the basement, in case that I somehow manage to regain all that weight... although the plan is to lose another twenty kilos yet.

I know, it made no sense. It's why I assumed everything else first, especially since one cord was fairly new because the last HDMI had _just_ died. That it ultimately turned out to be the case is...remarkably unlikely.

Fantastic! Birthday and Christmas, only 2 days in the year I feel _totally_ justified in doing nothing but that kind of stuff
Keeping some old clothes around will be a nice trophy one day, eh?

My experience with VNs was when I was in my teens, I'd play hentai VNs made in the 90s, heh. So pick any genre! Sci's saying Katawa Shojou, magnus with Fate/Stay, and the others had no opinions. So hit me with something good! Gonna start playing around with Ren'Py tomorrow (Python library for making VNs) but I need to get some idea of the genre too.

Okay my friend, let me hit you with a few on top of the others that have been recommend (agree with both of them)
The Fruit of Grisaia (18+) (50+ hours)- School setting but with a very interesting protag helping various top tier waifus sort their shit out. There are two games after that follow a common route. Recommend the 18+ version
Witch on the Holy Night (25+ hours) - Same writers as Fate Stay Night, would probably play fate first but if you want a lighter introduction to their writing this is very good, however you need a switch emulator for it.
Ayakashibito (18+) (45 hours) - Dark setting about certain people who are ostracized to one place in Japan due to the powers they have, a hidden gem for me.
Majikoi (18+) (50 hours +)- Humorous school setting where loads of wacky shit happens, the waifus are "samurai girls", protag is absolutely brilliant, there are lots of sequels if you like it.
Saya no Uta (18+++++) (7 hours) - Very dark, short VN about a guy who has his world turned upside down after an accident, he then meets "the" girl. Made by Gen Urobuchi. Definitely a gem in the hearts of the VN community.
G Senjou No Maou (18+) (35 hours) - Very adult school setting about a mob boss' son, don't want to say too much but it has a lot of twists and turn that culminate in something spectacular, true route is genuinely top 3 story writing in any medium for me. Lot of classical music themes if that's your thing.
I have a tonne more I could recommend but I'll leave there for now.
