Hm. Microsoft might be buying out Obsidian.
On one hand, Microsoft doesn't seem to be a fuckup when it comes to owning studios. And Obsidian's fanbase is too small to sustain with their production values. On the other, it's been an abusive decade from the game industry.

Uhh... no, it is a problem. Not an "end of the world" kind of deal, for sure, but there's plenty of games who have been turned into over-exploting crap, ontop of often being overpriced and released half-baked, to meet overly-tight deadlines. Of course the easiest solution is not to buy certain titles, wich I don't, but there's an ever-growing market of guillable gamers who just grew up with this kind of system and don't even realize how much thei're been ripped off.

That I can understand a bit more, instead. There's definately hacks and rotten eggs in the YT and indie reviewers circle, and I don't think anyone should blindly trust them either. Doesn't make bigger outlets any less sellout and incompetent, tho.

An independent studio being bought up is never a good thing.

Well, it's better than EA or Activision getting their greedy hands on it. Then the creativity would have been absolutely dead.

could have been worse, EA or Activision could have been the buyers, then the studio would be dead within a few years.

Well I just got finished watching a playthrough of the Spider-Man game on PS4 and holy shit is that game good. it's story is great and hits some notes weird and some notes very, very well.
It definitely makes me nostalgic for the old ps1 Spider-Man games and I've not even played it, just by watching it I get those feelings.
Plus the game is obviously setting up for sequels but I honestly don't care as it's damn good and I want more.

You think? Pillars 2 didn't do as well as Pillars 1, but it was funded in full by the campaign alone (as far as we know). Partnering with Paradox kept them niche in terms of marketing.
Usually. Wayforward appears to be the only small-medium studio that can stay afloat off the top of my head.

There's a fair few in Japan that manage, but in the West? Yeah... you're either an indie, or get ate up by one of the big monoliths of the industry. It's one more sector of media that doesn't know what half-measure is anymore.

Ah, the Penumbra/Amnesia guys. Yeah, they're good. But that sweet spot of creativity and production values is rough. Wayforward allegedly lets most of their staff go between titles, which allows them to keep going by doing contract work to fund their original creations.

Well, I doubt Microsoft will be content with allowing them to make games that amount to fancy indie games for PC. And if they give them AAA money to make stuff, they aren't going to let them "waste" it on BG3 with a modern engine.
The only possible upside I really see to it is if Microsoft at least lets them make *actual* RPGs we might get a studio that approximates Bioware circa DAO out of the deal.
But even classic Bioware buried real RPG depth after BG2 (unless you count some stellar freelance NWN modules made with the Aurora toolset) and even DAO was only hanging on to the thinnest of thin vestiges of it.

Tomorrow night I'm going to a screening of Orson Welles' final film called 'The Other Side of the Wind', starring John Huston. "But wait," I hear you say, "Orson's been dead these past 33 years." Well producer Frank Marshall found the unfinished work and completed it. It'll be my first Orson Welles film. I'll let you know how it goes.
Edit: it also stars a young Dennis Hopper. This'll be fun.

The Fist of the North Star game is good, but it really has awful pacing near the end.
I'm increasingly starting to believe that most modern game developers have no idea how to end a game. They reach a point where they forget that the game actually has to end, and end up with a confusing, meandering, poorly paced mess.
Anyway I assume the game has a much happier ending then the series proper.

Generally I am not one to recommend Youtube channels, but if anyone has any interest in weird/historical guns, allow me to recommend Forgotten Weapons.
The man genuinely knows his history and has a deep understanding of how these old guns were conceptualized, manufactured, and deployed. He also avoids the usual military bravado and "Tacticool" nonsense you usually get from this sort of thing.
Really interesting stuff.

Their Pillars engine is fairly mature by now, so development should be rapid if they make another. Though if you held a gun to my head, I'll admit, they'll probably be making what Microsoft wants them to make if they want to get the money for their own IPs too.
But, optimism, maybe we get a fucking western AAA studio that makes single player, story-driven RPGs again!
We can dream.
Also, thank you Sci, Drag, and TX! Was a lowkey, peaceful one. Worked a half day, napped, and fielded calls and texts for a couple hours. Was nice.

I mostly watch Shadiversity when I get that itch. I really like his "plausible weapons for fantasy creatures" series. But again, thanks for the tip!
