I told myself that I wouldn't buy the new consoles until a while afterwards, but somehow I have a shiny new Xbox Series X in my hands.

Its a fucking cool piece of hardware that has sweet fuck all on it at the moment.

I think, in the long run, Microsoft will with this generation, but Sony definitely had a more impressive launch.

I miss the intense console wars. Puerile, yeah, but grown men and teens having passionate, angry debates about why Xbox/Gamecube/PS2 were the best was a blissfully ignorant sort of world view.

So what're the system sellers right now anyway?

Demons Souls, Marvels Spidermans Miles Moralas, and Astro's Playroom on the PS5.

The promises of exclusives, and insane backwards compatibility on the Xbox Series X.

Slow and steady wins the race.

I am honestly in awe at this fierce little black box. I remember being very impressed with the Xbox One X when I finally bought it because of how much faster it loaded, and how much better the games looked. I already had the original Xbone, but I bought the One X specifically for Read Dead Redemption 2, and it didn't disappoint. Now here I am, two years later, still being impressed by this engineering because now the new console can load Read Dead Redemption in about twenty seconds.

I didn't buy any new game, because there frankly wasn't anything new the Xbox had to offer. However, I am still pleased because I am playing games I still love with some absurd power level surge in performance.

I think its also worth noting it gave me 0 tech issues, unlike the PS5, which apparently doesn't play well with HDMI switchers.

It seems to have built in functionality to know exactly what it needs to do to give you the best performance with your TV. I had to fiddle with that quite a bit on the PS5.

I think the Series X is extremely cool. I just really wish it had as good of a launch as the PS5. Astro's Playground is probably the best proof of concept launch game since Wii Sports. Its short, but it is truly joyful.

I don't know if it counts as backwards compatibility, but I gifted Assassin's Creed: Valhalla to my brother for his birthday (the PS4 version), and he mentioned that it also included the PS5 version if (or more accurately when) he gets the next console. Maybe forwards compatibility instead?

I remember Microsoft have said that there won't be any exclusives for the Xbox series X for at least a year after the consoles have been on the market.

The PS5 can do ps4 games, and a good chunk of those late ps4 games are getting the ps5 upgrade for free. Microsoft is doing that too.

But I was just running Jade Empire on a Series X in 4k.

Microsoft's backwards compatibility is on a whole other level.

Back to ME2 now.

I must say that Mordin's recruitment mission fits 2020 like a glove, theme-wise.

I'm maybe 5 hours in? Only did Mordin and Garrus' recruitments so far, plus one random mission in the Omega system.

I tend to be a mild completionist. I want to do all missions and get 100% in all systems, but I won't lose sleep because there still is some Iridium to probe on a couple of planets.

It was a breeze until the Blood Pack part of Garrus' recruitment. I got killed once by that damn Pyro just around the corner I had forgotten about, and then struggled a bit with the other side of the map where you get charged by Vorcha, Varren and a Krogan since I was really low on ammunition. Mordin's recruitment was relatively easy though, a ton of vantage points to take enemies out and you never really get swarmed. Plus there aren't many tough enemies, only a couple of basic krogans. I still feel rusty though, I'm glad I went for Hardcore and didn't immediately try Insanity, I needed some training.

I think I'll do Grunt and then Jack, because I remember Warden "Dumb-enough-to-plan-to-cross-Shepard-and-let-her-keep-her-weapons" being the tougher remaining fight before Horizon. And I'm not touching Kasumi's mission until I levelled up, I have bad memories of that final fight.

Still, it's going to be easier with Garrus now. Miranda is versatile but her weapon damage is pitiful.

Yeah I'm not sensitive to frame rate at all, and even I noticed that a bit. And that was on the Xbox One X, which was the highest end last gen system.

Morbid curiosity makes me want to see how that game runs on a base Xbox One. Unpatched no less.

Never bother with IQ tests normally, but this one seems pretty damn spot on what I'd expect my results to be. Upper end of the normal range, good verbal, poor spatial, memory is in between.

The Mensa one I did for a laugh before had me at 101, because it was entirely pattern recognition, and that's spatial.

You smoked me verbally, but I did better spatially. And a tiny bit better with memory.

Yeah, spatial manipulation has always been one of my weakest points. Doing this test, the issue was probably thinking about it incorrectly instead of having an intuitive sense of what the shape was. Meaning, I was looking at them as, "L-shape with a 2-block extension at 90 degrees off the upper tip, facing "forward,"" then trying to impose those rules on the other shapes, rather than the intended effect of internalizing the shape and rotating it in your head against the others. I started doing that with the last few, when they were too complex to really analysis, but it doesn't come naturally.

I would suspect we're all roughly within the 1 standard deviation range. Of all the people we've ever had, Troodon, Thunder, Raga, and Sci are probably within 2 sd.

Maybe waking up and the first thing I do is an IQ test is probably not the way to go.

I got up to the "closest points" one and fell completely apart as none of it made any sense!

EDIT: Welp, my neighbour across the hall has covid.
And they accidentally got one of our packages sent to them and they opened it before reading the label.

Fuck.
They cleaned it and returned it, so I cleaned it and am setting it in quarantine for a week, just in case.

FUCK.

And because of my asthma I am going crazy....stupid fear of this virus, stupid genetic defect....

As far as I know it's anywhere from 72 hours to 7 days, depending on the research.

Leaving it in a corner for a week and a half should cover it.

I am just more concerned with it being across the hall from me.

It's was mostly projecting the image in my head and rotating it. But every once in a while I needed to slow it down. Normally when something was the same, but inverted in some way I needed to take a moment to reconstruct the image.

Interesting. I can project the figures into the mind's eye just fine, but they're hard to "hold onto," and once I rotate them, they lose coherence unless very simple. Wonder what that implies about our brains.

I have played a lot of Mortal Kombat 11 yesterday, on my shiny new Xbox, and neither has disappointed me. MK got the next-gen upgrade, and the Xbox loads fights in a literal second. Next-gen isn't just graphics, it's also in performance, so I can report with absolute certainty that I am getting a next-gen experience here. The game looks fantastic, and it runs even better now that I've properly stationed the console on the 4K rather than my 1080 monitor I've hastily assembled on my impulse purchase. I've also been playing a fair amount of Halo MCC, and while it never was a burdening series for the Xbox, it's still nice to load in campaign in an instant, too.

I told myself that I would be playing Halo when I bought the new Xbox, so I had to fulfill my promise, even if it's not the Halo I was waiting on.

I'm a biology teacher, yes. But I think I am not too far from the "bilingual" status now. I live in Australia for 8 months a while ago and during my PhD reading and writing in English was an everyday task.

Still, while those tests can be useful, I really don't like the name they are labeled with - "Intellectual Quotient". Here, iirc it tested memory, logic and vocabulary, which can all be useful to have, but I think people really overblow how much they matter compared to the "Social" or "Emotional" part of Intelligence.

I work in one of the few fields in which those things that IQ tests look for are useful - it's easier to make teenagers care about some boring scientifical topics if you can wrap them in some intriguing factoids you know about, for example, and you are supposed to teach them how to properly speak - but I would say it is far, far from the majority. Even in a high school, there are a number of important jobs (like "education councilors", who look at assiduity and behavior issues, and exchange with parents) in which you need to be a people's person to be efficient.

For example, I score decently in the "Spatial" part, yet I have absolutely zero "direction sense". I am very good at reading a map, but if I wander for a while, I will never manage to know which direction I originally came from without indications. Some people innately know where they're going, and that might be more useful in everyday life (like when you have no GPS) than being good at manipulating Tetris shapes in your head.

Thank you.
I am doing my damndest.
Wearing a mask in the hallway, spraying down surfaces in there and limiting the time I have to be in there.
Other than that I am only leaving today for food shopping and for work on the weekend.

The one that will be more of a risk is dad, because he is older he doesn't take care of himself as much as he should. The old "If i'm gonna get it I'm gonna get it" syndrome.

EDIT: Also my bloody neck hurts all along the right side when I turn it certain ways...
Must have pulled it somehow.
fuck sake.
