Yet there were city elections. I went to vote, had to wash my hands before and after, broughtmy own pen and voting paper (they are mailed to every person on the lists)...but tonight people don't even care about the results since it is obvious the second round will not go through, making the entire process null and void (except maybe for those that got 50% in the first round - so almost no major cities).

A doctor friend of mine said that China-like "stay at home" policies were on the table.

My brother managed to get back from Norway today, I get the feeling it's not one day too soon. But since his fiancee is a nurse in a geriatry service and there have been cases there already, he is almost guaranteed to be quarantined very quickly.

On a professional note, I'm supposed to keep sending courses and exercises to my pupils. However, for some reason, the website that is used by all freaking highschool students in the country is not working well at the moment, since it was never designed to become a giant platform of working from home. Thankfully I got most of their email adresses last Friday, I guess it will be dropbox for a while.

But, problem #2, I work in a rather poor area, and even though the class I'm responsible for is absolutely adorable, many kids don't have a computer at home, making it a wee bit hard for them to work this way.

I think you overestimate how much someone's contribution matters in social interactions, it's really not about "contributing more".

For humor, no one is expected to be constantly hilarious, it's more about laughing with everyone.

For games, as long as we're not talking about highly competitive environments, then people expect you to have fun and be graceful in victory or in defeat. They don't want to see the Magnus Carlsen of Uno or South Korean levels of APM in video games, they want to have a good time.

Hobbies can be enjoyed without being an expert. Only a tiny majority of humans enjoy an actual "expert rank" in any domain, and most of us just don't, yet it does not mean that hobbies are meaningless: the goal is to have fun, not to "be the best". I took up cooking two months ago and have basically only learned how to do various simple pies; I know I will never be a chef, but it's actually fun and rewarding to craft something that's edible or even tasty. And my family is full of incredible cooks I know I will never match - but it doesn't matter.

It's a stupid cliché and one that has been kinda ruined when we talk about Mass Effect 3, but it's the journey that matters, not the destination. If you take up a hobby to reach a given rank, you're both setting yourself up for disappointment if you fail, and even if you happen to reach that goal - you'll probably drop it entirely soon afterwards because there's no enjoyment in it once the objective is fulfilled. If you take up a hobby to basically have a good time, then you cannot really be disappointed by the level you reach as long as you practice.

I can suggest trying some kind of ballroom dancing (once coronavirus is over, obviously), for several reasons.

1) Dancing is a physical activity, it'll keep you fit. It's relatively easy exercising, yet you're still constantly moving.

2) You can enjoy it without having that many conversations, because when you dance you're not expected to chat. So if you're not confident in your conversational skills, it won't be an issue. Plus most conversations when you go dancing are short ones, so you're not expected to be able to talk about something for half an hour.

3) As you're a guy, you will have to learn how to go to people (girls actually, but it works for all people) to ask them if they want to dance. Speaking from experience it is not easy at all but it is a tremendous help in everyday life - learning how to make the first step towards someone you don't know is a useful life tip.

4) Unless you pick some Swedish traditional dance (don't know if there is Swedish ballroom dancing), you will learn about a new culture.

5) I've done a dancing session in Sweden, and girls mentioned how hard it is for them to be invited, because the average Swedish male is rather shy (not an issue in France, Spain or Brazil). So they will probably react favorably to a guy inviting them. And step 3 will be more of a progressive curve because Scandinavian girls are used to invite guys if they want to dance.

6) You have a 90% chance of being in the gender minority of whichever dance you pick. Most dancers are female, yet pairings are 1♀, 1♂. So if you do the math, it means you're unlikely to be stuck with no possible partners.

7) It's a hobby that forces you to go out. Usually you have parties in bars where the kind of dance you picked is played and dancers flock in and have fun with random people.

As for which dance to pick - just watch some videos, there are a ton of possibilities. Some have people very close to each other, others keep a distance. Some are sexual, some are sensual, some are elegant, some are athletic...so it should be a combination of enjoyable music and movements you can picture yourself trying to imitate - of course, most videos are about excellent dancers, but reaching an average level can be insanely enjoyable already.

If you want examples of dances: tango, salsa (cuban or puertorican), forró, samba de gafieira, bachata, swing, lindy hop, foxtrot, waltz...you can also check Dancing with the Stars videos or its various international variations (So you think you can dance, Danse avec les Stars - most have a youtube channel) - you get a wide range of level between the contestants, even if you usually have one or two super impressive dancers.

It's really not hysteria, that thing is nasty, and it's better to act too early than too late. If you don't your hospitals will get filled with sick people and you'll be like in Italy, having nurses and doctors being forced to choose who gets a shot at reanimation and who just dies.

I think Sine nailed it. There's what you think the situation is and then there's what the situation really looks like. I feel all eyes are on me when I open my mouth and in reality, no one really remembers most of what anyone says anyway, just the memorable parts. I feel I'm always being compared to someone smarter, quicker, more competent, but that person might be looking at themselves the same way. And doing something active, something physical, is a great way to get past a mental blocker one has set up.

Well I'll be working from home for the foreseeable future starting by the end of the week. Luckily most of my company can work from home but this whole thing definitely hasn't come at a good time as we've been tasked with a massive change which ideally needed lots of face-to-face meetings to figure out.

Maybe I shouldn't be moaning because I'm still getting paid but the fact the company could go under if it continues on too long worries me, especially as I'm in the middle of buying a house.

Well, as per Trump's update a little while ago, in America, we're going to try to work through a fast relief bill in Congress to keep vulnerable companies and even individuals stable, via a massive amount of spending. Sounded like they're aiming to outright give hefty cheques to adults to get them through this.
