I've dabbled with learning various languages over the years. I had 3 years of Spanish in high school and 2 of Latin and 1 of German in college. I have completely and utterly forgotten all of it except maybe 30% of the Spanish because it's the only one of practical relevance here and I hear it all the time.

I've always wanted to fiddle with East Asians languages enough to develop a general theoretical idea of how they work without necessarily gaining fluency. The deterrent has always been the kanji.

Any interest I have in other languages is more text based than vocal so being able to speak something but not read it sounds like an utter waste of time to me.

And there is just no getting around the need for route memorization to learn basic reading and writing in *any* language or character set. People hate this but it's true. You teach little kids by having them mark papers over and over and over and over and by giving them books that present farm animals and colors and so on over and over and over. Or incessant verbal repetition and encouragement. "Can you say cow? Can you say cow?"

If you know the alphabet, you can start at a non 2 year old level for languages that use the alphabet. If you don't even know the writing system, you have to start like you are 2.

It makes me think that the best way to learn the fundamentals would literally be to read a bunch of books for Japanese pre-schoolers or kindergartners or play on websites that are their equivalent of ABC Mouse.

Sooooooo, remember that I bought two 32'' monitors late last year? The Dell S3220DGF Gaming Monitor Gaming Monitor?

They served me well, so far. Buuuut... well, I guess I really wanted to go for a Ultra Wide setup, so I just splurged about 2.500 Euros on two LG Electronics 38GN950-B 38'' monitors, which were simply not available back then and I wouldn't have felt too well spending that kind of money back then as well. I'll mount them with two of those metal arms, since they are too big for my current desk set-up otherwise.

I guess I just am getting into that spot where enough money comes in to make such purchases seem reasonable. There's enough money piling up in my bank account, that I can afford such a luxury once a year (and I'm going to travel to Paraguay this year as well).

The thing is, they aren't actually available right now, due to supply problems. But, if the other sites I looked up first are any indication, they should become available again in June. I already bought the two now, though, because I try to make these kinds of decisions, erm, decisively. ^^

My general pose is with my legs on the desk, while laying back at about 45 degrees in my big gaming chair, with more or less a full meter and more to the monitors. I'm pretty sure I can catch the main (left) monitor fully and mostly see everything on the right one.

And, yeah, it's nice. I struggled with money for so many years, that it's nice to finally be able to afford a few things. Since computer stuff is my main hobby and I don't own a car (public transport is fully enough in Hamburg), I can invest here for good results.

Kanji is both significantly easier to learn than you'd think, and significantly more difficult to master than you'd expect. In the sense that because they are pictographs, mnemonics can be quite easy, and once you know the concept any one kanji represents, you can decipher the meaning of a sentence without knowing what's literally being said. The downside is that kanji can have multiple meanings with only a tenuous link between them and many pronunciations, sometimes modified by placement in a compound term.

当, for example, means "this/that," "hit," and "appropriate," and can be pronounced "a(teru, taru)" or "tou."
当たる - ataru - to hit
手当て - teate - allowance
お弁当 - obentou - lunch box
当べん - touben - on duty

The meaning, as you can see, is not especially clear. As opposed to most kanji, which have readily apparent meaning, if you have no idea how to pronounce them. It's a sort of easy pseudo-literacy, sometimes.

If I had continued on with my formal Japanese courses, there was a literature course that I'm fairly sure involved doing just that. Reading the native books at the most basic baby levels and moving from there.

I got my 2nd covid shot the other day. Spent the entire day being genki (Vol knows what that means) but the second I put my head on my pillow to sleep I got mild chills, fever, all around suckiness and 2 hours of sleep. Now though I'm feeling fine. Very fine.

Windows recognizes the two monitor set-up, so if they are side by side, the mouse just moves straight to the other monitor when you move it.

I work at a patent attorney's office as an assistant, i.e. I write all the letters, invoices, prepare responses to office actions for filing with the patent offices through their official software, sometimes work on drawings of new patents to insert the reference signs, do monthly payment reminders to clients, also am responsible for annual fees for the patents and patent applications, occasionally do some research in the data bases of the patent and trademark offices and so on. It's a lot of variety, which keeps the job interesting.

My big fun purchase of the year was an OLED TV. (I also had to pay to get a new fence built but that's not really fun). I have one of those L shaped desks that goes in a corner and my setup used to be TV to the left and PC monitor to the right. TV was for consoles and actual TV. Monitor was for PC games and interwebs stuff. I would sometimes use the TV as a big PC monitor with a game guide or something pulled up on the actual PC monitor.

I radically changed my setup this year because I bought an OLED TV which has a fuckton of HDMI port as well as an HDMI switcher for even more. I also got some good speakers for Christmas a year or so ago. And finally I got a hand-me-down computer from work that was originally used by the marketing people for 3D rendering and high end animation and whatnot. It was going to public auction where this stuff sells for pitifully low and I asked if I could have it and was told to go for it. This thing is not technically a gaming computer, but it's quite beefy for "free" and was a significant step up from my other going on 5 year old machine. I mostly play isometric RPGs and things that just don't require that much muscle on the PC and play most AAA things on consoles. With the new setup, I really just use the OLED TV for everything and I just have to push one button to switch between HDMI ports. I sit with a wireless keyboard in my lap about 4-5 feet back from the screen and so I can still use a mouse at the edge of the desk.

It's way better than what I was doing before and actually helped me get more PC gaming done this last year than I've done in years.

I want to be exited about this, but other than being really pretty, the trailers and gameplay so far just seem to lack some kind of indefinable oomph that Ratchet and Clank should have.

We'll see I guess. This remains one of my favorite series and Insomniac seems largely immune from making bad or even mediocre games so it will probably be fine.

Finished my first game project of the year. Very, very simple, Pong in Unity. Years ago I made Pong from scratch in C++, so this was a touch easier, to the point I was getting tripped up by the conveniences. Like a feral child at a high society dinner.

I'm beginning to see why Unity games tend to suffer performance issues, let's just say. Need to do something more impressive for the next one. Gotta get Sci to do a short music loop, maybe get one our resident artists to make some assets. Depends how the work year progresses, but setting low goals for the year means its hard to trip on them.

What I was envisioning was a 30-60 second loop of generic, warm tavern music, with a faint background of incomprehensible murmuring, laughter, chairs scraping, and so on.

Clearly, I would leave it to the audio man to offer better suggestions on audio direction. So if you'd like to experiment with 8-bit, which would be appropriate, that could work. Idea is "traditional, warm, comfortable."

Well, unless rune comes through with a miracle, looks my 8 year old GTX970 is going to have to make do for the near future. Started building the new computer, as the boxes were getting dusty. The part picker site technically told the truth that everything was compatible and would fit together, but neglected to make clear certain assumptions it in turn made about what "reasonable space" might entail. And by that, I mean I had everything together and wired except the CPU and the PCIe (still need to measure my old GPU to see if it'll even fit in the case), when I discover I cannot hook up power to the CPU, because there is a block of sharp metal (the CPU fan) between the roof of the case and where I need to be. Perhaps if I had tiny baby hands, might be able to bend the power cords, but alas.

Bit like constructing furniture. _Always_ put something on backwards. _Always_ fail to tighten something enough.

Thankfully, not necessary. Just need to remove the heat sink and connect the CPU power and it's golden. Have a few mm of clearance for the 2 RAM slots it extends over too, so I'm gonna move the 2 16GB sticks I have there, then hopefully later get 2 more of the same when they come back in stock.

GPU is the big problem anyway. Things are getting way worse out there. Might have to pay more than I paid for this 970 when it was new to get one of similar power just in case this old one dies in the next year.
