This is why I roll my eyes at people giving high praise to most AAA games that come out these days. A lot of them are only entertaining for about a week and then they fall into some weird monotonous grind similar to an MMORPG, because the big developers still think that if you tack on some light RPG mechanics onto your game, it becomes an instant hit.
I'm also glad that the open world craze is finally starting to die down, since that's just like what the video said, a sold gimmick done in an attempt to keep up with current trends and rake in the money rather than doing something innovative.
Which is also why the big developers have to do more than add one gimmick to make me interested these days. Shit, my recent purchases have been Astroneer and Everspace, simply because I was on a space high and they delivered because they were different and fun in the "I can turn my brain on autopilot for an hour or two" kind of way. That and I was desperate for a space flight game that wasn't repetitive or drawing things like traveling to another system out as much as possible and calling it innovation *coughEliteDangerouscough*.
