The first one was a total garbage fire, I have no hope for its sequel.

Maleficent is one of Disney's greatest villains; its a shame she got such a lame, disappointing live-action film.

Good job on that btw. Not only it doesn't look as cool as the monster from the comic, but they couldn't resist spoiling it in the damn trailer to those who don't know that Ben Daimio is cursed.

I had a double movie day today with Captain Marvel and Alita: Battle Angel.

Captain Marvel

After seeing the movie, it ain't nowhere near as bad as lots of people in internet tries to make it be. Sure, there are parts that could be counted as "feminist agenda"(Like
► Show Spoiler
), but lots of time Carol doesn't do or say anything that male hero wouldn't do. For comparison sake, Carol does lots of things in the movie that Alita did in Battle Angels. So, basically, if you have seen Alita, then you got an idea of the "acts" and things that Carol does in her movie. I just don't see how people could applaude Alita for doing these things, but complain, when Carol does practically many of the same things.

As matter of fact, this whole "feminist agenda" and other "politicing" talks concerning Captain Marvel is totally overblown in Some/youtube. I would actually say that Black Panther had more "real world politics" in it that Captain Marvel had. Hell, DC's Wonder Woman raised feminist issues in it much more and made them clearly obvious at times. Yet, lot of people had seemed to give it a pass as it "part in design as movie was set at time that males still clearly dominated many aspects of the society". So, really, while Captain Marvel does have some parts that could be counted as "feminist agenda", it's not like the same things haven't been done in the past Marvel movies or DC movies or movies in general. So, why give it pass at somewhere else, but not in Captain Marvel?

Also, about Bree Larsen's performance. Another part that internet is trying to make worse than it is.

Yes, her performance ain't the most memorable and there were parts she could definitely have done better. But it's also no where near as bland or wooden as trailers let you believe. Also, now that I have seen the movie, it actually confirmed something that I had been ever since the first trailer- Bree Larson performance in the movie was in many ways by the design. Her character was written in a way that she should appear a emotionless/wooden/lost/confused. "Fish out of water", memory loss, going form high tech society to low tech, being supposedly superior race interacting with lower one theme.... script and the characterization of the Carol Danvers had them all.

So, Bree's performance is in many parts result of what was asked from her and she does good job in playing the character as it was written. If people wants to point someone to get the blame in this case, they should point their fingers at writers and directors of the Captain Marvel too as they are equally responsible for the way that Captain Marvel's character turned out.

Now that that's out of the way, what did I think about the rest of the movie? Was it the best of Marvel or did it turned out to be bottom of the barrel scrap?

As a whole, Captain Marvel was pretty much on par with Black Panther to me. Both where decent movies about a character that I had no real prior knowledge, yet they did good job in portraying and "selling" the character and their "worlds" to me. Both movies had their funny part, really good ones, mediocre one and the head shaking parts. At this both movies tried way too much to either sell the world/characters or they tried to be more than the simple movie they were supposed to be. This latter was done by adding real world political agendas and matters in the movies and it was matter of trying to keep it tasteful vs going in to "preaching" territory.

Captain Marvel had it good times and bad moments with mixed some surprises and something that makes you wonder the whole whole future of MCU really. And no, I'm not talking about incoming Endgame and Captain Marvels role in it. This part refers to something else entirely and deals with green skinned aliens. Really, I think the best way here to describe the Captain Marvel as a whole is that it was another formulated MCU movie. Something that MCU had been using ever since Captain America and Winter Soldier in many cases.

Simply said, Captain Marvel was another decent MCU movie. And it would probably be fine, if many people wouldn't have expected so much from this movie.

Alita: Battle Angel

This one was rather polarizing movie for me. Again, I didn't know anything about the source material and it didn't bother me. I actually think that it might have been blessing in this case as I could have enjoyed the movie as it's own story and not think about what I was missing or what was there versus "what wasn't there, but should have" from original material. As matter of fact, the movie actually made me curious about the original material.

Other than that, it's rare case, where I think the movie should have been longer. But Alita: Battle Angel is that rare case. The movie probably would've needed another half an hour to make it a better story. The movie actually started well and I could easily see and understand things. But things got little messy towards the end, because the pace was turned up a couple knots too much. Because of this, Alita's past was by passed too much and the romance part between Hugo and Alita felt way too forced in the third act. It was definitely the most gringe worthy part of the movie, which was mostly because things moved too much too fast in third act of the movie.

Part of my pace issues on the last act might be result of me not knowing source material. I did get that the movie kind ended as unfinished as this movie was supposed to cover just first few parts of original material. However, makers of the movie could've handled some of this little better and make it feel less "fast paced" and ignore the feeling of loss of story aspects. Good example of this was Alita remembering more of her past and her relations to this Nova character.

Other than that, I really did enjoy Alita: Battle Angel and would definitely like to see further movies. Sadly I don't see it happening as Alita's box office ain't doing all that well. Alita's only hope for better box office now is that people are displeased with how Captain Marvel turned out and go back to watch Alita. In some way, Alita is better female lead and more badass than Carol Danvers.

You know, looking at reviews and reading comments on internet, it would be interesting to see, if movie theaters will take Alita:Battle Angel back in their repertoire. As lots of people are in the same opinion in that Alita had better "strong female" representation now. So, people might want to go rewatch or first watch Alita just to wash away their Captain Marvel disappointment.

Because a bunch of people from Australia, to Europe to USA, are noticing a trend, that trend being the only "big name" or "decent" film coming out despite their theatres posting movies in 2-week increments/that cover the next 2 weeks whenever you look, as mine does is Captain Marvel. All other films are either mediocre films or old releases.

In some cases it is the only film advertised for the 8th.

As of right now here is my local;
The day before the 8th.

And the 8th itself
Where did all the other listings go?

Even if you sort by "all films" the only decent film that isn't the "small theatre utter crap barely anyone sees" that goes beyond the 07/03/2019 date is Captain Marvel.

Cinema listings don't just run out all on the same day so this has got to be structured, right?

Eh, this is almost certainly not a conspiracy. Traditionally Jan-April is when all the ass movies that can't compete with summer blockbusters and holiday epics/dramas get released. Marvel has somewhat disrupted this process just because Marvel has disrupted or generally blown apart any number of Hollywood traditions or expectations, but even so, they always dump their "Tier 2" movies in Jan-April. Their big flagship movies (Avengers, Ironman, Spider-man) drop in the summer, usually May so they can maximize profits across the whole summer season.

If anything, releasing it now makes a statement that they *don't* think it's a flagship title and are hedging bets on it, at least compared to their other content.

I'd substantiate this with a bunch of data and analysis on a movie by movie level, but I'm feeling lazy, and it's not hard to corroborate. It's movie business 101 stuff.

Meanwhile, Rotten Tomatoes apparently "lost" about 50k user reviews of Captain Marvel. I'm sure it's just a coincidence and that it wasn't just a bunch of the negative ones, or something.

Even so, it's still the lowest rated MCU movie, period.

I was hoping more along the lines of "proof of Disney's HUGE WAD when it came to buying out marketing" than a conspiracy anyway.
Still, weird to see it in action.

It's probably because they recently changed their policy to not allow reviews for movies that aren't out yet.

I just watched Captain Marvel myself, and it's fine, better than half of Phase 3, actually.

The political baggage surrounding the movie really doesn't appear in the film itself, there's a bit of female empowerment to be sure, but it's not overdone like many feared. Carol, and to that extent, Brie worked out fine in the movie, and arguably Carol as a character was better here than she has been in the comics the past few years. The Skrull/Kree conflict was pretty fun, and Ben Mendelson as Talos was in my opinion the best performance and character in the whole movie.

The movie does not break any new ground for the MCU, but it still is a competent entry and judging it on its own merits I don't see a reason to hate it.

which is weird, because you couldn't review a movie before it was out, people could only vote or say if they wanted to see the movie or not.

You know, we are at rather interesting point right now. Two latest MCU had been mediocre at best and all round formulated "good" quality movies. At the same time, DC have had great success with Aquaman and incoming Shazam is seemingly going to be really amazing too.

So, could it be that MCU's "great run" is an over and that they're at downward spiral or just "sloshing through swamp" pace, while DC have started its "winning spree"?

All I want from the MCU at this point is to NOT fuck up Avengers Endgame. Every extra good movie they can make past that is a bonus, as far as I'm concerned. And if they go full woke and end the same way as the comics... *shrugs* 10 years and about 20 (mostly decent) movies is enough of a good run for me.

And if DC can finally get its turn under the spotlight, that is also good for me. Those characters deserve a chance at a good adaptation as well.

Yes of course. Let's make even the giant monsters movie a thing that's actually about gender politics.

Fuck, I hate this decade.

Can't wait for all the outrage if Mothra, who's pretty much the only good female kaiju, gets killed. As it's very likely to happen, because that's kind of an ongoing thing with Mothra.

I will say this... even tho I fail to see why you'd need it, I do believe you could do a female Doomslayer, but she'd have to be biggest, coolest badass imaginable. Like Sonya Blade meets Ellen Ripley badass. At least.

That chick in the trailer looks like a confused puppy, and like she never picked up a weapon in her whole life, instead.

Well, that looks decent enough. Lots of scenes from original animation and genie is actually blue at times too, so we're done with that debate. But that Jafar..... really....I mean really. He looks so damn ridiculous and sounds even worse. He should be this amazing villain, but he looks nothing like it. We can only hope that the trailers ain't showing all the good Jafar parts as otherwise he will end up being the real downside of the movie.

Then again, I just can't take Aladdin seriously anymore after Screen junkies Honest trailers of it years back. That trailer really makes you look the movie differently, which is why that HT is still one the best ones Screen junkies had ever made.
