Glancing at the news, a lot of people have already died in Europe from the heat wave. Awful. A teen died while swimming to cool off, which even I was unaware won't protect you from the heat.

No they're not.

You mean this one?
Yeah, wonder what it'll look like this year, because this was taken back in 2018.

Alienmorph wrote:Here in the Big Boot isn't much better either. We've passed the 40 degrees Celcius a few times already, and I basically have to run my big fan all the time when I'm home just to be able to function normally. And even so I feel constantly tired and loopy.

The fact I can't get a decent sleep and instantly wake up the moment the sun comes up when it's this hot doesn't help either :p

At least I have AC at work, but in there there's also an old lady with dementia who likes to complaing about being cold in the summer and the heat in winter, so it's a constant battle to keep the AC on. Yeeey.

Yeah, a lot of Europe is just kinda fucked right now.
Stay safe man. Keep hydrated.

Kinda exactly how Europe feels whenever a Yank says that shit.

Our AC, 30 years old, completely broke down 2 weeks ago. Thankfully my cousin has HVAC guys who work under him, so he was able to get them out, overtime no less, to install a new handler and unit within a few days, but it was $7k. And that's with all the infrastructure already built in. And it was only in the high 80s at the time, which was unpleasant, and made my grandma woozy even, but bearable. 100+ would've been a very different ball game.

How're you Scandinavian guys handling it?

it has been rather cold here in Denmark, of course the heat should be hitting us today.

Lessee, it's 34 degrees outside here in Hamburg, which I am not feeling at all, given that I got a ceiling fan running 24/7 and the shades down on my big windows. Much more effective for me than an AC, which really most often make it more difficult for me to get a good nights sleep, since they cool down the room too much and then I need to turn them off, then I wake up because its heated up too much and need to turn the AC on again, and round and round it goes. At least that has been my experience the last time I was in Paraguay.

Anyway, tomorrow we'll reach 39 degrees, but I'll be travelling to my sisters to pass my birthday on Thursday there with my mom and her. We'll see how that goes in terms of the heat. Supposedly the temperature will be way down on Thursday.

Those of you with real jobs, is this true? I understand filtering out the crazy/weird people, like myself, but these anecdotes make it seem like most of getting hired is about acting like a professional entertainer.

Depends on the job, I'd say. I got hired on one side for my current job (assistant for a patent attorney) because by my masters degree in history I could prove that I had the mental capacity to do the job. On the other hand, I had a good interview with my boss, talking relaxedly about my life and what the job entails. Having a good composure during job interviews helps, of course.

While being personable and able to navigate a conversation with wit and charm is always a plus, and is good for tipping the scale in your favor if there's fierce competition for the position when everyone is pretty much equally qualified, its never been the deciding factor in my experience, limited as it is. More helpful for me is managing to convey a good work ethic and sense of dependability and professionalism, but it’s more the sum total of everything I’ve found in all honesty. I know folks who had bad interviews but got the job anyway simply because of their merit, experience, credentials and references. But I also know folks who didn't have any of that and talked their way into a job anyway by being persuasive and enthusiastic enough for the business to take a chance on them. Results will obviously vary; depends of the nature of the job and the nature of your employer. Better still is when you know a guy who already works there or someone who's friends or acquaintances with your new boss who can put in a good word for you.

I suppose what burns me the hardest is that even now, 10 years out of an incomplete education and without practice, I could still easily pass the technical qualifications, and the small talk would be cake. But nobody would give me an interview back then, much less now. Could do the job, can't get the job, so here I am, stockpiling ramen and rice. Bleh.

A master's though, that's impressive. Any specific focus?

Bro, I was told all through middle and high school, and college, that programmers are so badly in demand that if you have a pulse and can open an IDE, you're in. If I could've got into the sit-down, looking people in the eye, not arguing, and being pleasant is like a layup after landing the full court shot.

But yeah, for me, and people I know, nepotism is literally the reason for any real success for nearly all of us. Which is quaint, in a way. What's your experience been tho?

Long story short, I’d say half of all the jobs I’ve landed in my life were all on my own, and the other half involved me either knowing the owner, someone who worked there I knew put in a good word for me/helped me set up a meeting I might not have otherwise gotten, or someone made me aware of an opportunity I wouldn't have discovered on my own and pointed me in the right direction. Good tips in general: never be afraid or too proud to ask for help or advice from those you know, and become well acquainted with folks who know lots of people or have lots of business contacts; it can open doors you never knew existed.

Got a jury summons for the first time ever today. My strategy of having only a long expired South Carolina ID was finally thwarted by a need to fly last December to visit family. Curses.

I'm applying for a financial hardship excuse. I feel zero civic duty in general, but for reasons I can't quite explain, I decided to not just throw out the summons like 33%+ of Americans do, and rather go through the process of being officially excused. Call it residual patriotism. Almost felt bad about it, until when consulting my last tax return, I really do qualify for this because times are getting tough lol.

Had a lot of jobs?

I've had...3, all through or for family. And I've got an offer for some extra work in winter through a friend. Never had to throw myself to the public, for better or worse. Does seem like knowing people is the greatest possible way to get ahead. Though there's a weird habit, I've observed, that following procedures and doing things "correctly" will often be way, way worse than if you can meet people in any other context.

Jury duty? I've learned to request Fridays. All new cases start on Monday and by Friday hopefully they've gone through enough that you'll be sent home early. But I've still been called into the courtroom and spoken to the judges, so it all depends on how busy your courthouse is. Bring a good book.

I had a jury summons a few years back. Not a fun experience. Had to get up a 3 in the morning just so I could make it to the courthouse in time through tedious highway traffic, avoiding crazy protesters and journalists descending like ravenous vultures outside the courthouse, going through the whole jury selection process which took weeks. At least I got compensated for my trouble. Money for gas and parking and the time taken out of my day and loss of work. Got out it in the final selection because the lawyers on the opposing side didn't believe I could be unbiased because I had already knew a lot about the case on the news. That's always a sure way to not get picked. And it was true, so I didn't even lie. Honesty is the best policy!

Several. I’ve done everything from moving furniture to working a register to graphic design to cleaning/selling Persian rugs, to name a few.

Plan is to not even make it that far, but I do have plenty of books half-read just in case. Ever get an interesting trial?

Thankfully, the courthouse is only a 5-ish miles down the road. Their online system for filing the excusal seems to have been "very poorly designed," to put it lightly, so there's a decent chance I sent them a totally blank request instead of the filled out form I intended, so worst case, I get a free deferral. But as a matter of belief, really not the kind of thing I want to be doing.

Heh. There's no way I'd make it past voir dire, for several reasons like that. More a question of avoiding having to go down there at all. Bit like a vampire and the morning sun.

Quite a variety! What's your passion though?

I enjoy doing graphic design, though my skill and ability in that area is limited. I'm good on the art side of things, grew up drawing and painting, but I'm not gifted on the tech side of things; kinda have to brute force my way through trial and error as it doesn't come to me naturally, nor did I have great professors in that department. Honestly, I learned more about graphic design through internships where I got real world experience and training than I ever did in a classroom. Best time I had was working for a small business years back where I made signs, banners, car decals, and business cards for clients, that sort of thing. Simple but fulfilling.

Honestly, I learned more about graphic design through internships where I got real world experience and training than I ever did in a classroom. Best time I had was working for a small business years back where I made signs, banners, car decals, and business cards for clients, that sort of thing. Simple but fulfilling.

Had no idea you were an artist/graphic designer. Seems like half of everyone was, and I wish I had been one too, heh. Got long term plans with it, or settled on something else? I'm still waiting for a passion to strike, though I suspect one might not come.

Hoping the heatwave broke for you guys in Europe. We had a lovely one just hit, cresting tomorrow at around 100F. Not the worst, living in SC for a decade was consistently hotter and more humid, but a miserable time all the same. Only downside to having moved to the basement room here; No AC vents.

Playing a bit of Shogun 2, which was the first modern TW I got into. Started with Med 2, then S2 launched a little while after, and I was super into it for a while. Even shot some videos with a friend that are still on Youtube.

Took me a good few hours to remember how to play it. Very different from Total Warhammer, in both good and bad ways. Big one is that units are never numerically useless, only tactically. For example, in Warhammer, certain units become literally useless against certain matchups, or in the late game, do not warrant their recruitment cost at any point, ever. A basic gobbo unit, without faction/unit buffs, will dissolve on contact with anything at that point. Whereas in Shogun 2, your basic, starting peasant spearmen are viable to late game. They get mulched if you position them poorly. Late game archers will wipe them out in a few volleys if you don't have suppressing fire and they're spearwalled. But they'll hold off katana samurai and naginata warrior monks for a long while. Matchlocks are pure feast or famine, if you can't get their firing line set up, you wasted them. Bows are lethal, but common, and have to be microed.

Sea battles still blow. Heh. Got an Oda campaign fairly advanced, until _one_ tactical mistake snowballed into a defeat. Had taken all the land from my capitol, straight down the coast, and ending at a built up castle that acts as a chokepoint into my territory. Only approaches are across a bridge. Kept my faction heir and a decent army there to hold it while I built up my economy. Sallied out once to wipe out a defeated enemy stack, then spot a fresh enemy stack at the edge of the fog of war. 3-star general, unknown units. Had to decide if I should go back into the fortress, heal up, and wait for the attack, or, abandon my fortress and retreat into my coastal land.

Never occurred to me that the AI would build a general with max movement distance + other buffs, and make it to my fortress in one turn.
