Taking my dog for a walk today I got to thinking about what hell it would be to wake up and have it be 1992. First off, there's only two good things about the past; gas prices and air travel. (I'm not bringing up getting to see old friends or relatives, I was just thinking about if I was 40 and woke up in 1992) Everything else would be hell.

I was 9 in 1992, so I know all about it.
*The internet isn't quite out yet, but then what was it really then? You had to buy a $5k computer, all the accessories and they were not cheap.
*Jurassic park didn't come out yet, but I've already seen it. You're never going to relive the sensation of re-watching it the first time.
* 3 years until Apollo 13/Braveheart/Waterworld
* 5 years until Star Trek: First Contact/ 5th Element, etc.
* I'm stuck renting and rewinding VHSs.
* (a positive would be re-watching shows that are straight unavailable in the future. I'd get to watch all of the Drew Carey show. That would be one wonderful thing)
* Everyone's car were broken into for their stereos.
* Fast food was relatively cheap, but I'd still only make around $4.25 an hour with my skills and the availability of work to get. No internet work, so I have to find what's around me, which would most likely be minimum wage. So even a cheap meal is an hours' worth of work.
* The Red Sox aren't going to be good for another 12 years.
* Bush versus Clinton all over again.
* Day time cartoons; even with the joy of getting to watch Darkwing Duck I'd still have to wait another week for the next one. And like Jurassic Park, I've already seen them. I know the jokes and all the skits. (A positive would be taking to time to watch all the shows I DIDN'T watch, like Transformers)
* Good luck finding sushi in 1992

** Games; I loved the NES and SNES, but that's because that's what we had at the time. My favorites wouldn't be out for a long while.
* I'd have to wait 5 years for Star Fox 64
* Halo is 8 years away BUT online multiplayer is still years after that. I'd have to find other XBOX players and create LAN parties.
* Again, I can't relive the sensation of playing or seeing these for the first time.
* I'd have to wait 25 years to play Nier:Automata!

**Anime? Good luck.
* I'd have to make friends with someone who knows someone who shares VHSs. No subtitles and I'd be lucky if someone typed out a manuscript for me to read as I watch. Also the months of waiting between getting new VHSs to share.
* Even rarer for hentai. The internet wouldn't have that for some while.
* Any show I'm currently watching right now I'd never know the ending to, like Oshi No Ko, and that would be a hell of unending torture for me. Aka Akasaka would be only 4 years old in 1992. I'd have to wait 31 years to complete it. I'd be 71!!!!!
*Also, nerd culture wasn't as highly regarded as it is today. A 40 year old playing video games and watching Japanese cartoons would not be someone anyone admitted to knowing. But that also means the friends I DO make would be TRUE friends. Driving to any convention I'd find would be the highlight of my year.

And that's all to enjoy what I enjoy right now. What other things would I have to give up, or what things about the past the were terrible that I'd have to relive? Social standards at the time. Biases at the time. Arrogances that existed. Reliving the wars. It would be hell. All of it.

Yeah, we are incredibly spoiled for choices and, given how completely decent shows like The Mandalorian are getting raked over the coals for minor stuff, just... spoiled. Looking back at the dearth of options we had back in the day, I am incredibly grateful to have the ability to watch something new every day I want to or just go back and watch old stuff at leisure.

Sadly, not bronzed, though I did get some color. Apparently Caribbean sunlight will burn me in about 30 minutes of direct sunlight, fun fact! But I had a good time. Took 6 flights total to get from Newark airport down to Florida, for reasons, spent 2 days in Charleston to catch up with my mother and have dinner with one of my aunts and uncles. Was a bit anxious because I had no earthly idea what I was going to do for 7 days on a boat, but "eating, drinking, and lazing around" worked out rather well. Our package came with free drinks (for everything under $15, which was nearly all drinks) and meals (except for a few premium restaurants, of which we went to 1). So I put on about 7 pounds.

Went ashore twice. First time in Cozumel, lovely Mexican island just off the mainland, which our tour guide explained, is why it was one of the safest parts of the country. Purely a tourist site, armed soldiers everywhere, keeps the cartels and most petty crime well away. Visited a Mayan ruin, the only one, there. Was like the top bit of a ziggurat, where the priest did his demonic mojo, without the pyramid part. Neat little rustic village around it, made the best liquor I've ever tasted. Blue agave tequila, the 8 year and the 12 year was so smooth a child could take a shot. The 18 year was $269, and would've been an ordeal to get through customs, but I was tempted. Did get a pack of Cuban cigars, which I discovered after the fact are again illegal to bring into the US (Trump whyyyy), so I smoked 1 in the ship's humidor, and it was freakin' great. Smooth and clean, could actually get some tastes out of the tobacco, and by having my mother carry them through TSA, managed to get them the Charleston! Hopefully she can figure out a way to ship them up to me, because man they were good.

Second excursion was changed 'cause of high winds and waves, from a cay to Nassau. Was similar to Cozumel, though cleaner somehow. More touristy stuff, went into the ocean for the first time in 22 years. Noticed that unlike Cozumel, there wasn't cigar/no-prescription needed pill shops on every other building.

A lot more to say, but eh. Was a good time! Now back to work! Hope you lads had a fine week in my absence!

Trying to get copies of Arks of Omen: The Lion and The Lion: Son of the Forest is hard; they keep selling like hotcakes and the supply does not met the demand. While I was unable to acquire Son of the Forest, I was able to procure the final chapter of the Arks of Omen. I will say this: they did a really good job with making this feel monumental and a real turning point in the larger narrative. This wasn't a waste like the Psychic Awakening plotline was. Actual stakes and consequences.

So yeah, the board stokes of the leaks and rumors were true. Chaos wins, though to be fair, the Imperium really makes them work for it. It's not a humiliating curb stomp, and Chaos' victory does feel earned here. No last minute deus ex machina cheating or plot-armor abuse was involved. This feels like one of Chaos' most honest victories.

Vashtorr resembles the shattered world of Caliban (re-christened Wyrmwood, not Wormwood) with his infernal machines into a daemonic world-engine with the united triumvirate of the Tuchulcha, Ouroboros and Plagueheart at its heart to re-create the Old One's Webway tunneling engine, only upgraded with warpcraft to be more like a giant Webway dimensional bulldozer, called his Dissonance Engine. That alone would be a huge win, as Abby and Vash can now create their own Webway tunnels, or collapse the tunnels the Eldar and Dark Eldar use and occupy, or help Ahriman easily find the Black Library, or any number of other game-changing uses. But they're going after a much bigger prize: the secret Vault in Webway space filled with super-weapons from the War in Heaven of such dreadful power even the Old Ones and the C'tan didn't fully comprehend them. Abby and Vash activate it and fly into the Webway to begin their journey. The Imperium was forced to retreat, lest they get annihilated in the energies Wyrmwood was giving off and the giant hole in reality. So the story ain't over yet; Arks of Omen may be over but there's lots more to come. While the Fourth Tyrannic War has begun, Abby and Vash are out there Vault-hunting. They're off the board for now, but when they return it will be with potential End Times level threat.

3/4s of the Dark Angels and their successor chapters are called in for this, even when it fucks over various fleets of the Indomitus Crusade in the process. Dark Angels go in with the numbers advantage. They know they're walking into a trap, but had a good plan in place that nets them a clean early victory against the initial enemy fleet, before realizing no one could have prepared for the combo of Vash's demigod 4-D chess skills and Abaddon's millennia of hard-won experience.

Abby brought in the Black Legion, Word Bearers, Emperor's Children, Death Guard, World Eaters, various renegades chapters, the Dark Mechanicum, Vash's own forces, one of the remaining Balefleets, and more besides, and hides the bulk of them in a pocket of the Warp stitched into realspace in the system's star thanks to Vash's doing (using a technique he's used before to power his daemonic weapon designs in realspace, now modified for stealth void combat maneuvering) to surprise attack them and encircle their fleet. Vash also upgraded alot of their ships, and Wyrmwood itself had a ton of planetary defenses. Being a demigod of science/innovation and the Warmaster of Chaos/King of Imperium Nihilius has its perks.

It's a good thing the Lion, the Blood Angels and their allies arrived when they did. Even Vashtorr thinks the timing of such was maybe a sign a higher power was at work, though he couldn't tell which one, if it was the Emperor trying to help his team win, or one of the Big 4 wanting him to jump through a proverbial hoop for their amusement or to test him one last time. Battle in space and on the planet is apocalyptic. Once they get the pieces for the Key and begin the ritual, Chaos is in a defensive holding action, running out the clock, with the Imperium being the aggressive, invasive force for once, though like I said Chaos manages to prevail despite a truly herculean effort from the Imperium.

The Lion is back, and he's very much a changed man. He's a father who knows he wasn't there for his sons when they needed him, a dad who wants to bring his broken family back together, a guy who knows he made mistakes and will do anything in his power to put things right. He forgives the Fallen that aren't tainted with Chaos and he wants to reunite with the Dark Angels and help them. (And then hunt down and kill Luther, and wreak terrible vengeance upon the threats threatening Big Daddy E's realm and its citizenry.) He's like King Arthur crossed with John Wick. He's even more annoyed with the decaying carcass of the modern Imperium than Guilliman is, though his anger isn't with the Emperor nor humanity itself, just the tyrannical and corrupt leaders who abuse their power and rule over them. The Watchers in the Dark seem to privately whisper to him so he always knows where he's needed most and knows things he normally couldn't have. He's been helping the helpless in Imperium Nihilius for while, creating his own protectorate, earning a ton of titles from the people: the Unforgiving Knight, Beastslayer, Tyranny's End, the Cowled Giant, the Redeemer, the Walker of the Shadowed Paths, the Emperor Incarnate. He's still the top tier badass he was; even more so, in fact. With his skill with a blade combined with the Emperor's force shield and his new Forestwalk ability, he's a whole new Primarch killing machine. He defeats Angron, and he does it not just with strength, but with cunning and tactics, fighting Angron not like a warrior against another warrior in an honor duel but like a hunter going after a mad animal that needs to be put down. He is the Hunter, and the beasts of Chaos are his prey. Something he's been doing since he was an infant on Caliban, so he's damn good at it. Angron does makes him work for it and gets some painful hits of his own. They have an epic fight, through the bowels of the planet to the spires of an infernal palace. The Lion uses the environment to his advantage, fights defensively for long stretches to make Angron grow impatient and overreach so he’ll make sloppy mistakes he can capitalize on, makes use of his ability to essentially teleport around like a ninja with his Forestwalking. But even with all that aside, the Lion is still more than capable of slugging it out in brutal, savage fashion. There’s a humorous bit where Angron is throwing tanks at him and the Lion has to Matrix-dodge them. After the Red Angel's unstoppable onslaught recently, having the Lion bring him down, impale him on his sword, and smash his head in with his shield MK fatality-style is very satisfying. Imperium may have lost this day, but having the Lion on their side again is a huge gain.

The Emperor’s Shield may not be able to permanently kill daemons like his Sword can, but its way, way more useful and versatile in battle. That thing is a fantastic counter tool. Let Guilly keep the Sword. I think the Lion got the better deal.

The stage is set for the Unforgiven and the non-chaos Fallen—renamed the Risen-- to reunite and be brothers again, but its gonna be a long journey to achieve that, even with the Dark Angel Primarch present to help smooth things over and bridge the gap. There’s so much animosity, bitterness and zealotry dividing them, the Lion has his work cut out for him.

Its kinda-sorta implied the Great Rift forming is what stirred the Lion from his slumber, but it doesn’t really go into detail about that, nor does it establish when the Lion made contact with Dante; apparently that’s what the novel is for, which I haven’t had a chance to read, nor will I anytime soon it seems given how GW can’t keep up with the demand.

The low and mid-tier daemons who encounter the Watchers in the Dark are sacred of them, but a Daemon-Primarch seems to be the Watchers' limit, as Angron scares them and they flee his presence.

Abby and Vash have both honored and delivered on their ends of the bargain every step of the way, and both seem to have formed a measure of genuine respect and trust for the other. Abby seems to be happy to finally be working with a daemon that appreciates order, pragmatism, honesty and cooperation and doesn’t undermine, deceive or betray. Heh, Abby finally made a friend.

The Inquisition finds it odd that none of the various Eldar didn't try to stop Vash's ritual to make his Dissonance Engine, considering what it can do to the Webway they rely on, especially since it was they who tried to warm the Imperium of the Arks of Omen in the beginning, which makes them think either they were prevented and were dealing with problems of their own, or they're up to something. Seen a few interesting fan theories about this.

The Lion spars with his sons in the training room, just for the fun of it and to get to know them better. Everyone knows he could kill them instantly and effortlessly if he wasn't holding back, even when they team up against him, so there's no challenge in it, but it's more about the bonding experience. Like a dad playing catch with his boys.

I watched a few minutes and clips of the ceremony. Was lovely, the most overtly religious moment I've ever seen out of England, even had an Orthodox bishop and icon among a cluster of different priests at one point. The crown and royal jewelry, the carved up wooden chair, I have no idea the history or meaning of any of it, but it sure speaks to something deeper than messing around with shiny toys. When William swore his loyalty as heir, made me wonder how often that was a legitimate concern for ascending kings in the past!

That said, I don't know much or care about that family, nor is it my country, but it is nice to see some dignity of the past lives on, regardless of everything else about it. May he be wise and just, in whatever role he functionally serves. Now pass the eel pie and a pint!

The idea of the Old Ones leaving weapons around that they didn't understand is silly.

Of course the DA fuck over everyone for their own goals, the ultimate DA dickmove.

When reading about 40k metaphysics, such as Vash wondering if Big E or the Big 4 are screwing with him, it comes across, despite being a nominally secular setting, like all this Warp stuff is like the writers built a second story onto a house that used to have one. And now we're all standing on the second floor, marveling at how high up we are, and nobody ever looks up and wonders why there's still a roof.

Yeah but does the Lion let Angron impale him so he can strike a fatal counterblow!? Though I'm curious, what _is_ the fight like? I would think at Angron's level of magic bullshit, it's a one-hit kill situation with him.

Watchers spooking some daemons is a juicy point. Has an upper limit, but still.

Eldar were busy waiting on Guilliman's GF to give them orders, but she was busy breaking canon (and headboards), so you know how it be.

The mental imagine of Lion batting his sons around like how I used to play with my dad as a kid is precious.

So, uh, what's the losses here look like? You make it sound like the Imperium just got fucked hard on the battle, and in the losses drawn from the fleets/fronts.

When reading about 40k metaphysics, such as Vash wondering if Big E or the Big 4 are screwing with him, it comes across, despite being a nominally secular setting, like all this Warp stuff is like the writers built a second story onto a house that used to have one. And now we're all standing on the second floor, marveling at how high up we are, and nobody ever looks up and wonders why there's still a roof.

So, uh, what's the losses here look like? You make it sound like the Imperium just got fucked hard on the battle, and in the losses drawn from the fleets/fronts.

The way Vashtorr describes it, I took it to be like the Old Ones’ equivalent to the Manhattan Project: a bunch of scientists are tasked in the middle of a horrific war with harnessing a force no one has done before and weaponize it, and while they understand the basic foundational mechanics/mathematics/physics of what they’re doing and can build a functioning device, they don’t really know what will happen for sure when it actually goes off. (Some of the Manhattan Project scientists were concerned the Trinity bomb could ignite Earth’s atmosphere and kill most if not all humanity, among other calamitous things. Their fears turned out to be unfounded, obviously, but the blast was still 200 times stronger than their 100 ton TNT test run, to say nothing of how little they understood about radioactivity back then compared to what we know now.) And the Old Ones were killed off before they could use/test them, and once the War in the Heaven was over and the Necrons went to sleep, the Eldar, freaked out by all those unfathomable big boy toys lying around just waiting to accidentally go off, dismantled and destroyed what they could and locked away what they could not deep in this now forgotten Webway Vault.

The Imperial fleet isn’t wiped out; they just fail to stop the ritual, and then retreat because of all the universe-twisting energies been unleashed by this giant Webway killdozer of a planet when it bores a giant hole in reality. The Lion saw that everyone on the planet was going to get annihilated if they stayed, and the fleet was in danger of being torn apart as the portal opened and orders a full withdraw. Live to fight again another day. There was no option to chase after Abby and Vash as the portal closed after they went through. The book doesn’t go into numbers; both sides inflicted damage on the other, but neither side was outright defeated or destroyed in battle; the clock ran out in Chaos' favor before the fight could play out to the end. Vash and Abby just needed to acquire the the relic from the Rock and prevent the Imperium from destroying Wyrmwood or disrupting its activation.

I spent most of today on my Skarsnik campaign in Immotal Empires (TW3), because I have a soft spot for the 2 gobbo focused lords the Greenskins have. Skarsnik differs from Grom in that he doesn't buff them nearly enough, and doesn't have the cauldron to create rocket-arrows, but does make them dirt cheap, which is nearly good enough. Lets you field a whole lot more armies than you otherwise would've, even if they're basically glorified chaff. But with some good composition and tactics, they can hold up well. It's only now, coming up on turn 100, that they're getting mulched too easily by infantry/ranged, and I'm obligated to start spending big on monsters to anchor the lines. Or even just to barrel through and neutralize the friggin' half-stack of elite ranged units that the dwarves are all packing.

But it's fun enough. Running a fat deficit, staying ahead by conquest. The inability to build orcs anywhere _but_ savage lands or Karak is a neat gimmick, but in practice is crippling my ability to sustain expansion/frontiers. Winning the grind down with the chorfs, undead, and dwarves, but it's never decisive enough to push through unless someone else attacks them at the same time. Thankfully I allied early with the skaven clan to the south, and ended up forming an alliance with Mors and Skyre as a result, who keep my heartland safe and suppress the chorfs alongside me. Though Belegar is finally pressing in from the west of the Badlands. I gave Skrag a bunch of settlements just west of Thorgrim's capital (mine now) as a buffer, but he never was able to beat them back, despite full stacks of ogres, and he's about wiped out now.

I'm currently taking a bit of a break from TW:WH3, because the game is currently running pretty badly in the late game... stuttering on the campaign map, notifications coming in late (which seems to cause the stuttering)... CA is going to bring out a patch this week which hopefully helps with that. I played the Sisters of Twilight, which was as satisfying as usual... until the Dwarfpocalypse broke out, which is when I dropped that game. Also had a half run with Boris Ursus, but man does it get tedious to never have any money and enemies come in from all sides. Kislev ain't that much fun.

Also, I definitely played too much of it over the last two weeks. I'm also currently not that wild about playing WoW and don't want to start anything too involved new, because this week a new expansion for Stellaris drops, so I'm kinda stuck. As a supplement, I got the first Everspace and this is episodic enough (it's a rogue-lite space game) that I can play a few hours and then do other stuff, although it's getting a bit repetitive already. Until my dual joystick set-up arrives in a month or so from Virpil, I really don't want to start the sequel, because I want to experience it with the joysticks.

In any case, I'll probably spend a lot of time on Stellaris the coming weekend, although even that is limited by three, yes three, movies coming out this week I am interested to see on Saturday... if my cinema shows all three in different connected time slots, that is. ^^
