As you've guessed, those small dots are Jupiter's moons.

Wow, nice!
Best I ever got through my telescope as a kid was a decent look at the moon.

The condo I moved into 5 years ago is surrounded by street lights and on the 2nd floor, so moving my 8" reflector around isn't easy. In fact, I lucked out that I could see it all from just outside my front door, but I counted three bright door lights plus a walkway light shining directly into my eyes the entire time I was trying to squint and see the 4th brightest object in the sky. It's just too much of a hassle to bring it out in my current living condition.

It's interesting what can set a person off. I can take being insulted on my physical appearance, what I wear, my hair, my hobbies, my tastes, and shrug it off. But a dig at how much oil I use to fry chicken, that gets my hackles up instantly. Weird.

I believe that may be it, actually. I don't put thought into the others, but I had even thought there was too little oil in that skillet, and then someone comes in and questions my competence? Fuck that.

I want to, but the ones who usually start it can escalate far better than me and start a real world of hurt. Better just take the insult and prevent the whole thing from happening while it's in it's infancy. That's probably the best skill I learned growing up in my household. Granted I feel like a wimp who can never hold an argument, but preventing shouting matches that I can never win make for a far smoother day with those I'm related to.

Overwatch League starts tomorrow, updated the game client today. Every hero gets a skin for every team, 26 heroes, 12 teams, you get one free for logging in before February 13th. Otherwise it's $1200 for them all.

Just finished reading Starship Troopers, which has been on my to read list since approximately the Late Cretaceous period. I liked it fairly well, but I like Stranger in a Strange Land Better. The ideas and setting were interesting but I got kind of bored of all the mundane military minutia by the end. Gonna try The Moon is a Harsh Mistress next.

There was a part where the movie separated from the book and took it in a more...entertaining path. I forget much of the book, but I do remember how excited I was to read it.

I beat Mario Odyssey's main story. Pure, raw bliss the entire experience. This goes down not only as one of the best Mario games of all time, but also as one of the best Nintendo games of all time. Period.

Still have a fuckton of more stuff to do. More collectables, more objectives, more items, more secrets. New worlds unlock and previous worlds have new content after the final boss. I have around 450 power moons as of right now.

Mario can defeat a kaiju-sized Dark Souls-esque dragon with just 3 butt stomps. His posterior is more powerful than a nuclear weapon.

Metro Kingdom's New Donk City is the best. And Mario should totally hook back up with Pauline.

Well, the movie is basically a parody of the book. The writer really did believe we could be better of if we lived in a heavy militarized society. Paul Verhoven makes fun of the idea all the way through, while also delivering a kickass action movie, and even predicting stuff like the rise of Youtube and Skype. It's probably one of the few instances of the movie being better than the book.

Can't wait to see how Sony will fuck it up with their reboot.

I finally read it, after being recommended for years, at the airport last Christmas while my flight was delayed.

It's a case where I hold the book and movie in high regard, but different ways, like Jurassic Park. As the director did not actually read the entire book, I can see why his chose to make subtle satire, as he missed the message. The biggest point I got out of the novel was the concept of having a personal investment in society is the key to relative harmony. No voting unless you serve in some capacity, can't be an officer unless you serve with the enlisted, so on and so forth. So the people who don't give a shit, who just want a comfy life, they can go and live it, but not vote or otherwise affect society like we allow now, and the people who do want enfranchisement go out and earn it, because they care to. Which is theoretically a healthier arrangement than anyone who's born on this plot of land having a say in how it's run, but that's a debate topic anyway.

I can never remember any message from a book, or core themes. It's just not a thing my mind does. I only remember stories. That's why I like Bill Bryson. He'll include 100's of little stories in his books and I can retell a dozen of them or so. Or a biography of someone. Lot's of little stories. You tell me to read a novel and I'll retell what happened, but the message of the book or the themes are completely lost on me.

I have pretty much the complete opposite opinion of this. The movie has a kind of snide, superficial superiority complex somewhat like a teenager who has read a cliff's notes version of some classic work or other and now considers themselves an expert because they know slightly more about it than Joe Dirt. It probably doesn't help that I generally hate satire because it almost always comes off like that.

I think Vol's assessment is pretty spot on. The book has two points as far as I can see which is basically that the infantry doesn't get appreciated the way they should though they are the ones who do the bulk of the actual fighting and bloody work and that people should have to earn enfranchisement through service. I don't think it glorifies a militarized society for the simple fact that the society in the book *isn't* militarized. Most people aren't soldiers and civilian life is pretty much exactly the same. A lot of them even have a disdain for the military (such as Rico's father, who doesn't want him to join at the beginning and literally says the military only exists to allow useless, stupid people to subsist off the government teat because they can't bootstrap it). It appears militarized because we are looking at that world through the eyes of a bunch of soldiers.

It also gets some cred for originating like half of sci-fi tropes: hivemind bug aliens & power armor being the most notable.

Oh the part about basic infantry being very underappreciated I agree completely. Same with the the creation of lots of sci-fi tropes: the Imperial Guard and the Tyranids from Warhammer 40k owe ALOOOT to Starship Troopers. Just to say one of many. I prefer the movie, but doesn't mean I consider the book trash, or that I don't aknowledge it was a milestone in science-fiction.

So, back in November I began listening to all my music on my iPod in alphabetical order. 3000-ish pieces of music. So far I'm in the 900's and there's a lot of things I've learned/observed so far. One of them being how often I misspelled words, like forrest and Astaroid.

1959. That's actually one of the more interesting things about it. Old sci-fi usually has a certain level of Jetsons type silliness to it, but this was still remarkably plausible for how the future might look. It probably works because he deliberately doesn't bother explaining how FTL or power armor or whatever works. It just does. The only kind of overt wonkiness I could identify was that he thought a certain level of radiation on a planet was necessary for genetic mutation so organisms on low radiation worlds would basically stop evolving for some weird reason. It had a very 1950s "everything revolves around nuclear stuff" vibe to it.

Its influence is indeed massive in the genre. It can be found everywhere: countless movies, novels, comics, video games, the list goes on and on.

Hell, Aliens, one of the most beloved and influential sci-fi films ever, was heavily influenced itself by Starship Troopers. James Cameron even had the cast read the book. The portrayal of the Colonial Marines, Bill Paxton's line of "Is this gonna be a stand-up fight, sir, or another bug hunt?", the Xenomorphs being organized like an insect hive; there are numerous direct homages. Aliens is perhaps the closest we've gotten to a non-satire ST adaptation on the big screen.

And all that helped lead to the creation of things like Metroid and Starcraft and 40k and many more awesome stuff, so gratitude is indeed in order.

I'm having a real issue with my computer. I'll turn it on and the sound will be distorted and play at half or even a quarter speed, when I listen to something. I use a Fosucrite Scarlet 2i4 for my sound card and I updated the driver yesterday and it's still happening. It started around the same time that my computer won't restart if I ask it to. it will shut down and then never come back up. For the sound I'll have to reboot if to get the sound to play correctly and right now I had to do it three times. I'll run another update on it, but does that sound like an issue anyone is familiar with?

Uninstall it and reinstall it? Sometimes just an update isn't enough.

Your computer not restarting properly seems like you are having a problem with windows itself though.

As a follow-up to that if you go into the device manager, you can actually manually uninstall the driver and force the system to use the default Windows drivers and if the problem persists then it's probably something to do with Windows and nothing to do with the driver.

Thanks Theo and Raga, I'll try that tonight.

What's some good rules of thumb for system restore? It's always been optional and since I have a new laptop I want to learn how to do one properly.
