I have a long standing theory that John Wick is actually a sequel to The Matrix. Neo's RSI, divorced from his body and trapped inside the Matrix, reconstitutes itself in the Matrix, his memories of his dead wife actually muddled memories of Trinity. He doesn't remember being Neo, but his abilities stem from just that. Morpheus alludes to a past between them in the second movie, the freezing of the people walking by being manipulation of the Matrix. The Continental is just another means of control.

Doubly Awesome if you like to think of Constantine as an earlier iteration of the Matrix, too, back when angels/vampires and the like were the ones running the show.

Or maybe it's one of the previous Chosen One the Architect talks about when Neo confronts him in Matrix Reloaded. Tho I like the idea he isn't one of the failed Neos better lol

Well, I always liked the idea that Constantine is one of the previous Ones. But John Wick is Neo's Residual Self Image still plugged into the matrix.

It makes all the little details and callbacks that much better. Seeing the above trailer... It's just amazing.

You know, I wouldn't want that to be official canon, but as a fun "what-if" scenario, that's pretty brilliant. I'd totally read that fanfic.

Seriously, this video explains the John Wick is Neo theory better than I can. The use of landlines, Morpheus' role in both franchises, the New York freeze scene, the fact that Wick's reference number is 1111111. Now the "Lots of guns" bit from the upcoming movie.

Foreshadowing or reference, either way, it's the coolest modern film theory out there in my opinion.

Zack Snyder thinks everything must be gritty and deconstructed, like in Watchmen. And audiences rejected his vision, and that's why Wonder Woman and Aquaman are holding up the entire DCEU on their shoulders right now, and not Batman and Superman.

Zack Snyder is an edgelord bro-dude with a budget and decent-ish directing skills. He was never a good fit to helm a cinematic universe, least of all a superhero-based one, since even the most unforgivablely murderous ones still need to have some semblance of humanity or reason to be the way they are.
