"Not having talent" is the excuse those who don't even want to try use. If you don't feel artistically inclined anymore is one thing, but if you ear that annoying voice in your mind telling you "don't even try, you weren't that good to begin with" tell it to FUCK OFF and keep going. Even if it's just once in a while, and just for yourself. That and I think we have a myth that artistry is mostly about being a savant or a genius or whatever and it's mostly not. It's more like being an artisan. Learning to play an instrument or to draw or to sing or to write is very much like learning carpentry or how to repair cars. There *is* an "artistry" to it but a lot that is really just a word for intuition and experience that someone has built up by large amounts of practice. This is one place antiquity had a leg up on us. Before artists became rock stars in roughly the Renaissance, they were seen as skilled craftsmen. A guy who painted murals was seen as being the same kind of dude as a blacksmith or a stonemason. And they all used the apprentice system and it was understood that apprentices had to do it for a long time before they were "masters."

I know someone who has decided to learn to draw in the last couple months who keeps getting discouraged and I keep telling them this. You always suck when you start or when you get rusty and the people who got proficient got proficient because they practiced for a long time. On some level it's intimidating knowledge because it means hard work, but it also means there is no quasi magical "savant" spark that you must possess to succeed at it. Normal person is totally enough.

I like how in live internet debates, the background meta is a large, wooden bookshelf, and whoever has the most books, with the thickest girth, has the upper hand when making declarations.

"Oh ho, but I have an esoteric series of Russian literature on miserable peasants tilling barren tundra, 100,000 pages across 10 editions, surely I am the most learned."

"Back at you! I possess a 50 volume treatise, translated from a now extinct sub-Saharan tribe of fruitarians on their tribal philosophy about penis shaped produce!"

"Ah, nooooooo!"

Lol, I have a book called "Elementary Aspects of Peasant Insurgency in Colonial India" on my bookshelf. (Never read it. Long story). How many faux internet authority points does it get me?

*Edit* Also go to be worth some points "Provenance Research in Book History" and "Historians' Fallacies: Toward a Logic of Historical Thought."

Reminds me of the video essay people too. You know... the folks who make clickbaity videos precisely 10 minutes long full of nothing, but they do so from a cleverly crafted set full of textbooks and other crap, so you know they're cultured individuals you should trust and listen to. It's basically the visual equivalent of an argument for authority.

Well I mean more akin to "I have lost the talent/skills I once had".

The things I WANT to do are too difficult for me and what kills me and my drive is that I can't make the things I used to.

But, yeah I have also kind of lost my artistic drive.

Yeah and the whole "the thing that people just used to do is now a skill that can be marketed" thing is annoying.
Like, we used to just create stuff because that's what we did. One could "waste time" on art and not preference academics if they so wished and they'd not be able to lose a lot in life. Now Art is a part of academics as much as maths, science, history, etc.

It's more painful when the apparent "savant" (at least in comparison) was you, years ago.
You know it's there, somewhere, but it's like a phantom limb almost. You feel it, but it's not there.

Some days suck more than others. My mom broke both bones in her upper thighs the night before yesterday. One clean, one in such a way that they'll have to do surgery on her to implant a platinum plate. It seems that the surgery is a standard procedure and as such I am not that worried about it, but of course the entire thing still sucks.

Also, I'll be traveling to Paraguay in two weeks, so at least I'll be there to help her through that time.

SciFlyBoy wrote:I have this weird thing I share with my Mom where my Bad Cholesterol, LDL I believe, is ridiculously low and that's my normal. So low that my doctor's usually get bug eyed when they see my blood tests. I try to get them to tell me what my personal highs and lows should be, but since it's lower than everyone else's they keep telling me there's nothing for me to worry about.

I've been keeping a 1200-1500 calorie diet lately and I've been maintaining a weight of 165 consistently for about 3 weeks now, dropped from low 170s about a month or so ago. That's not a lot of calories for having handfuls of belly fat and love handles and other handfuls of squishy stuff all over. I'm personally trying to eat my way (in a healthy manner) to 153, but I have a feeling that my diet alone can only take me so far. If I add high intensity cardio to my regular routine I should see some dramatic improvements.

Funnily enough, I appear to have the opposite. Mine is slightly elevated beyond the normal range, despite having eaten virtually nothing that could've possibly elevated it for months before the first blood test. A later visit to a cardiologist then remarked that might simply be my normal level, and that even a very restrictive diet might not move the needle all that much, and my PCP's desire to put me on statins wouldn't be wise.

As it turns out, the wisdom of daily caloric needs and nutrition is wildly incorrect, or misreported, when not adjusted for the average lifestyle of the people learning about it. There's the old chestnut about how housewives in the 20s in America ate about the same amount of calories as modern women, with far less processed food, and were 70 pounds lighter, or something close to that. 1,500 is plenty for a grown man who's not doing something strenuous.

The other day, no breakfast, no lunch, had a porkchop, fries, 2 hotdogs, and green beans for dinner, and that was more than enough for how little I did all day. Got an unfortunate body shape, so my ribs are narrower than my hips, and any fat on the midsection at all makes prominent love handles, so filling out the obliques or being so lean I have an 8 pack are the options there. But it's good to keep in mind that a pound of fat is about 3500 calories, and your weight fluctuates a lot depending on hydration, a reasonable deficit takes weeks to burn a single pound, and it's not even apparent because of those fluctuations.

TTTX wrote:indeed, i wouldn't be surprised if the "sea" people was horde similar to the Huns or Mongolians or vikings and wanted land or riches or food etc. for themselves which forced a lot of those their victimes to become new "sea" people in order not to starve or just survive as their society collapsed and basically creating a domino effect that caused close to every society (that we know of) to collapse.

Seems reasonable. Just imagine if the food trucks stopped coming for a month, polite society would turn cutthroat real fast, heh.

It would, of course, depend on how old fashioned your cardigan is then, gotta rep the librarian cred. Having those unreadable tomes stacked on the desk would be the debate equivalent of slapping a dick on the table tho.

That's awful, man. Thankfully, modern surgery is tremendously more effective than it was when I was young, so fingers crossed she's out and about relatively fast. And hey, good on you for going there for her. Bonding moment, a chance to repay her for raising you!

Not gonna lie, the trip was literally planned for the last two years and I had finalized the booking months ago, so this is just a coincidence. I'm still happy to be there for her. And thanks for the well wishes!

Yeah, I've been somewhat obsessively weighing myself during all of this and it is not uncommon for my weight to fluctuate 3-5 pounds or so over the course of the day.

"In 2008, when I was working for the good folks at Janimation in Dallas Tx, we were hired by Gearbox to create a vertical slice (an animated version of what the game will look like) for the game "Duke Nukem Begins", a Duke origin story.
I headed up this project, as the director at Janimation, and did a lot of the character development, including the design and modeling of Duke. We poured everything we had into making the most awesome cinematic Janimation had ever created. But unfortunately, we got word the game was canceled due to the legal issues with Duke Nukem at the time.
"Duke Nukem Begins" was never made.
It crushed us, as this was what we thought could help us compete with bigger players in the game trailer market at the time.
Because it is still a piece I am damn proud of, I am releasing it 13 years after its creation. The whole team that worked with me deserves to see this released into the wild.
I hope this somehow resurrects this version of the game by showing the world how awesome it would have been...."

My record high was 220, and a week later, 213, despite no changes to diet or hydration. The body is a mysterious vessel. It's why I use BMI fairly loosely. Doesn't perfectly map, but close enough.

Excellent news, magnus! Hope you can get down there and keep her company safely!

I'm off for a one day work trip. Been a rough season so far, lucky to cover the yearly bills at this point. Only a few good weeks. People are still scared, I guess, and none more so than middle class women, our bread and butter. Hoping shit picks up in the next few months, before winter, because the government screwing up my application for CARE funds (corona unemployment for the self-employed) hurt real bad.
