And yet we also all go around wringing out hands going "why do we keep doing dumb thing XYZ?!" A simple answer to this is that we don't have as much control over what we do as we think we do and/or what we really want is notably and consistently misaligned with the "ideal" and we keep finding clever excuses to do what we want instead.

Fatalism is comforting that way. I see it that we all have a human nature, a unique body configuration, and a capacity to act freely within that. If we take the entire set of all humans that have ever been, and lay out everything we've ever thought or done, and compare that against everything else ever to live, and the sterility of the rest of the universe, and find ourselves straightjacketed into repetitive, forced behavior, from what standard are you judging?

Obviously we have agency. I've never said otherwise. My point is that "muddling along more or less" is the default human response when the universe throws us a curb ball. Sometimes we ace it, but mostly we don't either individually or collectively. How precisely good we are at muddling along I guess depends on what your definition of success is. If it's as rock bottom as "we aren't all dead" and/or "we spring back from mass death" then it's hard to see how we do any better than cockroaches. If it's "we not only survive but actively solve some problems or at least make life not completely suck despite curb balls" yes, obviously, we do way better than other species we know of.

I wouldn't call this fatalism. I would just say it's admitting that humans have limits and that those limits are probably more constraining than most people find comfortable to think about.

*Edit* curve ball. I have weird typos where I will accidentally put in the complete wrong word but spelled right so the spellcheck doesn't catch it. Super annoying.

Bleu cheese is delicious and the LotR movies lacked for not having Tom Bombadil.

Yes, it solves me having to do complex maths for determining OC birthdays.
Because of course I bite off more than I can chew with maths! :D

Yeah, which is why on Rannoch for Quarians as an example, Tali would be, like, 35-40ish, lol.
Seeing as Rannoch is closer to their star compared with earth and their days are 32-ish hours?

Finally finished a legendary Vampire Counts (TW2) run. It was one of the most difficult ones I've done. 318 turns, as Vlad. That campaign has gotten far, far harder with all the updates. The Empire bloc was real tough to deal with, but at least my units could put up a fight, or hold them, long enough for the heroes/monsters to do work. Took a long ass time to finally wipe them out.

But then the dwarves were the real nasty ones. Because I could only ever field 2 armies capable of actually beating them in the field consistently, and at great cost. Neutralize artillery->infantry meets->Try to get off a good overcharged Wind of Death->try to catch the Trollhammer fuckers and missiles->grind out the melee fight. With my best line infantry having like half the stats of their Ironbreakers, which are also scripted to _pull out of combat_ to throw their fucking bombs, plus Slayers, it was real slow. Managed to break the back of their United Nations after killing 20+ stacks, I assume Malekith was doing something in the east given the number of turns I had unmolested to break out of my territory and take a big chunk of their territory. Then they regrouped, pushed the Dark Elves out, and started spamming bullshit stacks at my borders again. Had to drag Isabella out of a freshly conquered Norsca to break the cold war and quickly cap Karak 8 Peaks and Black Crag to win.

Rough, rough campaign, at no point did I ever feel "strong" despite owning everything from Brettonia to Norsca to 8 Peaks. VC badly need some updates. Now for Norsca, another painful one.

I would love nothing less than Dead Space to make a big times comeback.

But it's EA in 2021. Not exactly a combo that inspires confidence.

We'll see tho.

Despite the times, good games do manage to slip out. And given Dead Space 1 already holds up really well, I would _hope_ there is so little room for modern design that it's going to be necessarily good.

Sort of like if a giant wheel of delicious cheese rolled down a hill into a pig farm. With a little luck, you can carve away the poisoned bits and save the core.

Watch it be a shooty shooty first person remake, to go after the RE7 and 8 success.

Tho even that could work, I suppose.

Hmmmm, well now I am getting conflicting opinions on where to start on The Witcher series.
Some say read all the books first.
Some say watch the Netflix show first.
Some say play all three games in order.
Some say just play three and play the others if you feel like it.

Can I just get a straight answer so I am not making a "I started playing Mass Effect at the third one" type of mistake please Witcher fans?!

That said, the Military Suit better not be changed, that was _my_ RIG, my rigger.

Uhhh, it's really subjective to your tolerance for jank and tastes.

I did 1->2->3, never read the books and especially never watched the show, and I was content. But 1 is janky as hell, though the most creative, 2 is better, but shorter, and 3's the big, expensive spectacle with some fantastic writing.

But in general, I'd say start with TW3, and if you really get into it, play 1 & 2, because the continuity between them isn't that big, they stand alone pretty well.

Uh, I'll be damned.

That looks like it could work out. Gameplay seems very similar to the original, and given the Frostbyte Engine was made for big open spaces FPS maps it should be able to handle claustrophobic 3rd person shooter environments pretty decently.

There's still those statements from a few weeks ago about "updating the game for modern audiences' sensibility" that makes me worried, but in terms of graphics and gameplay seems like we're on the right track. I'm very plesantly surprised!

Unity is very much not meant for modeling. Suppose that means I'll need to learn Blender for anything more complex than primitive shapes stacked together.

Had a bit of flooding. My room's about 2" off the basement level, so once there was a solid centimeter across the entire floor, elevated all my stuff, killed the power, and slept upstairs. Figured it probably wasn't necessary, but with the rain still going for a few more hours, might as well. Was fine, the sump-pump was able to stay ahead, didn't get any worse than it was when I packed up.

Though looking at a weather map, I'm juuuuust to the west of where the nearby river turns into a flood zone. Local high ground, wooooo!

The TV Show is only okay (honestly I think it actively sucks but a lot of people like it so I'll begrudgingly give it "okay") I've also heard from people who have not played the game or read the books that they found it confusing. This is because the books are set over dozens of years and the fist few books in the series are a bunch of short stories and novellas and not one long connected narrative. But the TV show is trying to cram all that background content into one season in a way that just doesn't work chronologically. So my advice on the show is to either avoid altogether or to use it as a supplement if you like the other stuff.

If you do absolutely nothing else play the Witcher 3. Even without the books or the other games, this is a fantastic game and it is possible to play it without the other content.

My official advice for people is usually read the books first and then play the Witcher 3. This imo is the path that gets you the most enjoyable content with the least clunk or dead weight. There are tons of Easter eggs for people who have read the books and CD Projekt Red does an absolutely fantastic job of writing some of the best characters from the books into the game. I'd give examples but some of them are spoilery for the books. I played about half of the Witcher 3 and had fun but got distracted and moved off. Some time later I read the books and then went back and played the Witcher 3 again. It increased my enjoyment by a significant amount. The books are very good and the game does a fantastic job of carrying on everything in character.

Some caveats.

If you don't like to read novels, the Witcher books are not going to make you magically like novels. They are quite good. They are not some sort of earthshaking experience or Nobel Prize material or whatever. I listened to the audiobooks and the narrator for them is quite good.

The Witcher 1 game is not very memorable, is the least like the books, has the worst writing of anything but the TV show, and has very old fairly monotonous gameplay. It's a perfectly fine game of the time. It is isometric and plays a little bit like Neverwinter Nights (it was literally built with an improved version of Bioware's Aurora engine). If you have a high tolerance for that kind of stuff (I do because I like old isometric games) and are prepared to spend 40-60 hours on it, have at. Even with my like of old games like this, I found it pretty tedious and had to push myself to get through it. You are really not missing much if you skip it.

The Witcher 2 is CD Projekt Red starting to hit its stride. It is also an old game at this point and was their first true action RPG so it has some clunk to it. It is much better written than the Witcher 1 and has an interesting and engaging story with lots of high stakes choices. If you can deal with PS3 era kinda clunky action game controls in order to get a good 30-40 hour story, this one is somewhat worth a try.

There is some carry over from the Withcer 2 to the Witcher 3. There isn't much from the Witcher 1. That being said, there is *way, way, way* more carry over from the books.

So again for the most bang for your buck for least amount of old game clunk, I recommend the books and then the Witcher 3.

If you have fairly high tolerance for old game clunk then books + Witcher 2 & 3.

I personally feel you are missing very little to nothing by avoiding the first game and the show.

@ Vol

This storm was not fucking around. It's why we don't even have basements in this neck of the woods. They would just flood every summer. My biggest concern anymore is actually wind. During Hurricane Harvey it rained 18 inches in 3 hours here and we didn't flood. Total rainfall over the 3ish days the storm parked here was around 35 to 40 inches. It got up to 50 for some areas to the NW of here. If that can't flood us out, I think we are good. However, I have a big Southern Live Oak tree in my yard with huge branches that partially overhand the house. It's a brute of a tree and I doubt a nuclear bomb will knock it over, but a strong enough wind would probably be able to tear some branches out of it.

Anyway, hopefully some water in the basement is the worst it gets.
