Ah! I remember recommending this book in our reading thread. It's really neat, but for those who can't or don't want to bother seek it out...

Has anyone picked up Pathfinder: Wrath of The Righteous?
I'm not really familiar with DnD and in this instance pathfinder rules so it is a bit overwhelming but they seem to have put real effort into helping beginners with it. It's really scratching that high fantasy rpg itch which I feel we haven't had a good example of for such a long time.

"The skeleton of the world's biggest Triceratops goes on sale: The skeleton of a 66-million-year-old giant Triceratops fossil could soon belong to a lucky dinosaur enthusiast -- that is, if they have an estimated 1.2 million euros ($1.4 million) to spare. The specimen, dubbed Big John, has a skull 2.62 meters (8 feet 7 inches) long and 2 meters (6 feet 7 inches) wide, while his two largest horns are 1.1 meters (3 feet 7 inches) long and more than 30 centimeters (11.8 inches) wide at their base, able to withstand 16 tons of pressure, according to auctioneers Binoche et Giquello.
The dinosaur lived in Laramidia, an island continent which stretched from present day Alaska to Mexico, and perished in an ancient flood plain currently known as the Hell Creek formation in South Dakota, where he was discovered by geologist Walter W. Stein Bill in May 2014. The dinosaur was excavated a year later, and later restored in Italy, the company said in a statement. The creature's remains were preserved in mud, and the skeleton is more than 60% complete and with a 75% complete skull. However, Big John does bear the wounds of a difficult life, with a laceration in his collar from an altercation with a smaller triceratops, which the auctioneers said was due to territorial defense or courtship of a mate. With three horns, a parrot-like beak and a "frill" that could span nearly 1 meter used to protect the neck or attract a mate, the Triceratops skull is one of the largest and "most striking" of any land animal, according to the UK's Natural History Museum. The herbivorous animals could reach up to 5,500 kilograms (866 stone) and 9 meters (29 feet) in length. At 8 meters, Big John is the biggest Triceratops specimen ever found, the auctioneers said. The creatures roamed the Earth during the Late Cretaceous period, some 68-66 million years ago in what is now the modern day USA. Big John is expected to fetch between 1.2 million euros ($1.4 million) and 1.5 million euros ($1.7 million) at auction on October 21 at the Drouot auction house in Paris.
This is not the first time a dinosaur skeleton has gone on sale. The sale of one of the world's most complete Tyrannosaurus rex skeletons smashed auction estimates last year, when it sold for $31.8 million, setting a new world record for any dinosaur skeleton or fossil ever sold at auction. However, such sales have raised concerns from paleontologists in the past. In September last year, the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology (SVP), which represents more than 2,000 professionals and students, wrote to Christie's auction house about Tyrannosaurus rex skeleton Stan going under the hammer. The SVP said: "Fossil specimens that are sold into private hands are potentially lost to science." The organization added: "Even if made accessible to scientists, information contained within privately owned specimens and future access cannot be guaranteed, and therefore verification of scientific claims (the essence of scientific progress) cannot be performed."

I have not but plan to eventually. My MO on just about every game anymore seems to be "play 1/3 to 1/2 of it and then get distracted by something and stop. Then come back 1-2 years later and actually finish it."
I did play the first 1/3 or so of Pathfinder: Kingmaker knowing absolutely nothing about Pathfinder rules and my generic knowledge of 3rd edition D&D based on nothing but perusal of rulebooks because I like the lore and playing 3rd edition D&D videogames back in the day was able to carry me through. I've only played like maybe 2 or 3 actual pen and paper D&D games in my life and that over 15 years ago.
Magnuskin probably has better advice, but since I am a relative neophyte compared to him, I'd say a viable strategy that's worked for me is "when in doubt play a druid." They are versatile and sort of teach you lots of mechanics at once because they both cast spells, use standard weapon attacks, and have weird special abilities like wildshape. They can also summon, have an animal companion, and can cast healing spells, so there's a lot of "oh shit, I screwed up!" padding in there.

Ah a fellow kindred spirit, the amount of games I have half finished is a little silly.

I just went rogue cause I normally go that in all rpg's.
I've done enough research on rogue so don't feel too bad on that, but levelling the other characters is mind-fucking.
Re: Tali'Thread vas Clan Zorah nar BSN 6.0
I don't know what the fuck I caught. Got these blisters all over my thighs, thought it was poison ivy. But the pattern wasn't right, and they had a red aura around them, so probably bugs. Only there are no bugs, I've checked, and I've not gotten new "bites" since the first round, despite being in the exact same place. Then my lymph nodes are going sore, getting itchy skin randomly all over, hands and ears especially, and then these weird, temporary hives on my forearms.
So _something_ is going on with my immune system. Reads like a queer, low-grade allergy, but why would it go for 3+ days?

Ragabul wrote:The TV Show is only okay (honestly I think it actively sucks but a lot of people like it so I'll begrudgingly give it "okay") I've also heard from people who have not played the game or read the books that they found it confusing. This is because the books are set over dozens of years and the fist few books in the series are a bunch of short stories and novellas and not one long connected narrative. But the TV show is trying to cram all that background content into one season in a way that just doesn't work chronologically. So my advice on the show is to either avoid altogether or to use it as a supplement if you like the other stuff.
If you do absolutely nothing else play the Witcher 3. Even without the books or the other games, this is a fantastic game and it is possible to play it without the other content.
My official advice for people is usually read the books first and then play the Witcher 3. This imo is the path that gets you the most enjoyable content with the least clunk or dead weight. There are tons of Easter eggs for people who have read the books and CD Projekt Red does an absolutely fantastic job of writing some of the best characters from the books into the game. I'd give examples but some of them are spoilery for the books. I played about half of the Witcher 3 and had fun but got distracted and moved off. Some time later I read the books and then went back and played the Witcher 3 again. It increased my enjoyment by a significant amount. The books are very good and the game does a fantastic job of carrying on everything in character.
Some caveats.
If you don't like to read novels, the Witcher books are not going to make you magically like novels. They are quite good. They are not some sort of earthshaking experience or Nobel Prize material or whatever. I listened to the audiobooks and the narrator for them is quite good.
The Witcher 1 game is not very memorable, is the least like the books, has the worst writing of anything but the TV show, and has very old fairly monotonous gameplay. It's a perfectly fine game of the time. It is isometric and plays a little bit like Neverwinter Nights (it was literally built with an improved version of Bioware's Aurora engine). If you have a high tolerance for that kind of stuff (I do because I like old isometric games) and are prepared to spend 40-60 hours on it, have at. Even with my like of old games like this, I found it pretty tedious and had to push myself to get through it. You are really not missing much if you skip it.
The Witcher 2 is CD Projekt Red starting to hit its stride. It is also an old game at this point and was their first true action RPG so it has some clunk to it. It is much better written than the Witcher 1 and has an interesting and engaging story with lots of high stakes choices. If you can deal with PS3 era kinda clunky action game controls in order to get a good 30-40 hour story, this one is somewhat worth a try.
There is some carry over from the Withcer 2 to the Witcher 3. There isn't much from the Witcher 1. That being said, there is *way, way, way* more carry over from the books.
So again for the most bang for your buck for least amount of old game clunk, I recommend the books and then the Witcher 3.
If you have fairly high tolerance for old game clunk then books + Witcher 2 & 3.
I personally feel you are missing very little to nothing by avoiding the first game and the show.
@ Vol
This storm was not fucking around. It's why we don't even have basements in this neck of the woods. They would just flood every summer. My biggest concern anymore is actually wind. During Hurricane Harvey it rained 18 inches in 3 hours here and we didn't flood. Total rainfall over the 3ish days the storm parked here was around 35 to 40 inches. It got up to 50 for some areas to the NW of here. If that can't flood us out, I think we are good. However, I have a big Southern Live Oak tree in my yard with huge branches that partially overhand the house. It's a brute of a tree and I doubt a nuclear bomb will knock it over, but a strong enough wind would probably be able to tear some branches out of it.
Anyway, hopefully some water in the basement is the worst it gets.
Okay, so i'mma probably go for playing 2 and 3 and maybe see if I can find the books going cheap somewhere and read them if I can find 'em.
Thanks.

Oh. Consoles only? I do have my PS4, but parity is a question.
In other news, I might have corona. Apparently the rashes, blisters, and hives I've had and am having are an uncommon reaction to the virus, and my skin is notably crappy. Though I've had no real respiratory issues, my sense of smell has been slightly better than normal in fact, it's not unheard of for some people to only manifest the skin issues. Cannot find any bugs biting me, nor have any known allergens, so it seems most likely something viral. So that's fun, though this is day 7, so I must surely be nearly over the hump of whatever's making my immune system sperg out.

Re: Tali'Thread vas Clan Zorah nar BSN 6.0
TW2: I've noticed the High Elf combat scripting has a "desperation drive" for the monster units, and presumably cav, but they die too fast to notice. But even if I set up my battle lines specifically to shoot down incoming eagles/phoenixes/dragons, with anti-large monsters/infantry guarding my backline, and even if I engage them early with my own flying monsters, they _will_ force their way into the ranged and artillery. It was a sight to watch a phoenix, shot to shit by Shades, but of course proccing the resurrect, shake off a black dragon, a Kharibdyss, and a Black Guard unit, to smash my bolt throwers for a few seconds. That's a desperation drive. That and the absolute guarantee to rout and rally 3 times.
I suppose I should try armies with no ranged component to test this. It makes some sense, design-wise, to script them to target units they have the greatest ability to cause damage against. In practice, it's a more frustrating version of the general's bodyguard charging your braced pikes in Medieval 2. Kinda wanna set up a modified backline crossfire to play with this. Set up one bait unit the closest, then when they swoop, have everything else pointed directly into them, or some variation.

https://www.alanwake.info/2021/09/remaster.html
"Epic Games Publishing and developer Remedy Entertainment have announced Alan Wake Remastered for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC via Epic Games Store. It will launch in Fall 2021. The remaster includes updated visuals including the character model of Alan Wake himself and the cinematics.
This is for you.
I’m beyond happy to tell you that at the time of writing this, Alan Wake Remastered is nearing its completion. Confirmed, announced, coming up in partnership with Epic Games Publishing. Multiplatform. PC on the Epic Games Store, Xbox, and for the first time ever, PlayStation, this generation and the previous one.
This is for you. Alan Wake came out over 11 years ago, and through that time, you have told us again and again how much you love the game, the story, the characters, and the lore. And that matters a lot to us. We love this game as well. I love this game. The remaster is coming because of your support for Alan Wake through the years. That is why we felt it was fitting to make this announcement here, at The Sudden Stop, which has been an integral part of the Remedy community since back in 2012, when it started out as an Alan Wake fansite. The Remedy community wouldn’t be what it is today without The Sudden Stop, and we wanted to show our gratitude by telling you about Alan Wake Remastered right here. So thank you, Rachel, and everyone else, for supporting Remedy and our games through all these years.
Early on in the game Alan Wake says, “In a horror story the victim keeps asking why – but there can be no explanation, and there shouldn’t be one, the unanswered mystery is what stays with us the longest, and it’s what we remember in the end.” This is an idea close to my heart. Stories that make me think excite me, stories where everything is not freely handed out to me or wrapped up neatly, where I am left with a mystery. Mysteries are magical to me, they hold a promise, and I am often happier with that than a final answer. This is what we as a team, and I as the lead writer of Alan Wake, set out to create for you a long time ago.
This story and character were personal in many ways. Alan Wake, being a writer himself, gave me an opportunity to use what I do and love as a writer as an element in the story. Alan Wake also contained the mystery of forests and lakes, which are precious to me as a Finn. And, instead of a focused one-note horror fare, it was this strange, even wasteful mix of horror, humor and supernatural mystery. I also love it because it turned out to be a very hard game to make, with many struggles along the way, and that makes me even prouder of what we achieved.
The original game was only available for Xbox 360 and a few years later, PC. We are thrilled about the opportunity to bring the remastered version out for a new generation of platforms. I am excited to hear what you think about Alan Wake.
Alan Wake Remastered is the original experience you fell in love with all those years ago. We did not want to change that. But the visuals all around, including the character model of Alan Wake himself and the cinematics, have been updated and improved with some choice next-generation upgrades.
Alan Wake Remastered will launch this fall. Stay tuned for more information soon.
This is for you. I hope you enjoy it, either again, like meeting an old friend, or for the first time.
Yours,
Sam Lake, Creative Director, Remedy Entertainment"

Chaining Benadryl works a charm. Still getting some rashes and hives despite it, but I feel much better about it, while whatever the fuck is in me gets beaten off.
@SMTV: That protagonist is a titless woman. I approve, but still.
@Alan Wake: Epic Store? Fuck. Suppose I'll need to see the parity for PS4 then.
