What would the appeal of a live-service Far Cry game possibly be? They're decent for their stories, some pretty landscapes, then faffing a little bit. That's it.

I fished when I was younger. Nothing edible, but I'd like to pick it up again. I could probably appreciate it more as a thoroughly drained man.

Though I kick myself for not buying a firearm when I lived in SC. In NJ, the laws are draconian, so even meeting all standards, there's a capricious element of officials (well used) to just say "no" for a permit. That and the yearly bear/deer hunts have been curtailed, and the former shut down I think, by the governor, which is going to be a problem. But once my family here pass and/or retire, I expect to immediately move out west somewhere, which would be far better suited to learning how to make food from wild animals.

You can always go the crossbow route which is what I mostly use. I've actually only ever shot one deer with a rifle when I was a teenager and everything I've killed as an adult has been with a crossbow. I've always wanted to hunt bears but they are protected because they were eradicated from the state and have only just begun to recover in the extreme Eastern and extreme Western portions of the state. And I do pretty much all my hunting on public land being a total commie like that. There is public land available to hunt on within an hour drive pretty much any major city in the US. Pretty much any lake overseen by US Army Corps of Engineers (which is most lakes made by dams) has public hunting.

Gone a few days without taking anti-histamines. Other than my skin being slightly easier to redden when touch, no hives or itching. Whatever the fuck started in September, and into October, seems to have passed. An annoying mystery I really hope doesn't crop back up.

And being scavengers, there's been some problems already, much less what will happen. Hopefully their carrying capacity isn't too big. Deer are everywhere, several have been dead on 46 for a week now in fact. Haven't been to the parks or wilderness areas since I moved here, sadly. Not really sure what thrives out there, or what the permitting process allows. Anything that doesn't make scary sounds is probably much easier to get a hand on.

Crossbows are not more effective than guns but at close range and with good shot placement they are as effective. Rifles are obviously the best at longer ranges. Compound bows are the least effective overall (as they are the weakest and the most dependent on skill) and shotguns are probably the most effective (assuming close range). Anything I've ever shot with a shotgun has been dead pretty much as soon as it hit the ground. That being said I've only hunted turkey sized and smaller animals with a shotgun. An animal hit with a crossbow will usually run for 15ish seconds before falling over. Modern crossbows are very accurate, very powerful, and require very little practice to shoot effectively at 30 or less yards. You can shoot one at up to 60ish yards but this requires a lot more practice to do well. Arrows do not staunch bleeding because with proper shot placement (through the lungs and heart), they pass completely through the animal. (It sounds made up but my dad actually managed to kill two feral hogs with one bolt one time. He wasn't trying to do this but that's just how much velocity a crossbow bolt has. It can pass through an animal and still kill something behind it). Even so, most bleeding is internal and there's consistently way less blood than movies make out. Modern mechanical broadheads have also radically improved the damage over traditional archery. These are broadheads that do not fully deploy until they make contact with the target and once deployed they can have a 1.5+ inch cutting diameter which is a big hole to punch clean through something.

Permitting process varies by state but it's usually affordable. In Texas, anybody born after 1979 has to take a hunter safety course. These are like $40 to take online and it basically just teaches you hunting laws and commonsense gun safety and such. An instate hunting license usually runs somewhere between $30-80 per year. It's considerably more expensive to get a license in a state as a nonresident (usually several hundred). Licenses have different "endorsements" which is to say you pay varying amounts based on what you want to hunt. I get what's called the super combo, which allows me to hunt or fish for just about anything in Texas but ducks and a few weird things like sandhill cranes. It's about $70. Conceivably you could get *just* the freshwater fishing license part or *just* the hunting deer but not migratory game birds part and it would be way cheaper. I also get the general use public lands permit each year which allows hunting on various state and federal land in the state which is $48 a year. Then states will also often have lotteries for big game so they are not overhunted (stuff like moose, bears, mule deer, elk, and bighorn sheep). I usually enter a half dozen or so lotteries for mule deer each year at $3 a piece but have yet to be drawn for any. Adding all that up, my first year permitting cost was $200 or so and is about $150 a year recurring. However, if all you wanted to do was catch catfish or hunt rabbits or such, I believe this is only like $40 a year.

The first year is always the most expensive because of equipment. I'd say it's possible to get rigged out for crossbow hunting for about $500 if you buy a "starter" crossbow kit with a cheapo scope. I got a Barnett Jackal for $250, another $100ish for permits and hunter's ed, and $150ish for other miscellaneous gear (camo, a good flashlight, a good knife, basic broadheads, etc). I've since upgraded to a nicer bow but that starter type bow is absolutely good enough to kill deer. My first (and still biggest to date) buck was killed with the starter bow. Even my "nice" bow is an el cheapo at $400 but I'm 100% satisfied with it. You can go out and spend $1200 on a crossbow but this is really not necessary at all. I've been doing just fine with the cheap stuff. And once you have all that stuff, that price is not recurring. The main recurring costs are broadheads and arrows which gradually get banged up or lost over time. The crossbow also needs to be restrung periodically. I need to do this every 2ish years at my rate of usage. I probably spend $100 a year on purely necessary stuff for hunting and about that again for bells and whistles non necessary stuff that I just want. Price of lodging and gas has to be taken in depending on where you go to hunt. But considering 1 lb of chuck quality ground venison sells in the store for about $10 and you get 40-60 pounds of meat per deer, I'm usually looking at 500+ dollars worth of meat I'm procuring per year. And whitetails up north tend to be much bigger bodied for some reason so people up there are getting even more. We have smaller scrappier ones down here for some reason.

While deer hunting is the most "worth" it cost wise, it's also by far the most boring in my opinion. It's 95% sitting around waiting for something to happen. The high is really high and worth it, but man you have to wait for it. I've compared it to getting to ride the fastest, highest roller coaster ever, but for every 5 minutes of roller coaster, you have to spend like 5-10 hours sitting there waiting for the cars to climb the hill. The two I have the most fun at consistently are squirrels and turkey because they are very interactive (with calls, creeping up on things, etc.)

Today, at the house I was finishing up work in, I got to pet their dogs. They were 2 big golden retrievers, one darker than the other. They were very good dogs and nice and friendly. Then I helped the boss unload the truck at his house, and his dog, a very good dog, came out to "help."

So I pet 3 dogs and got a free Baconator. Honestly, that's more fulfilling than 99% of days I live.
