Primal's third episode of season 2 was good, not as good as the first two, but still enjoyable, and more importantly it did lay some very critical foundations that the rest of the show will need for the story to continue.

--Fang is still really hurting from the events of the previous episode. She's sad, Spear is sad that she's sad and the role he played in that sadness, but we get the sense that the damage done will heal with time, and Fang and Spear's bond is strong enough to endure and overcome it. Friends going through a rough patch, but still friends.
--Spear finds evidence of another caveman civilization, though one recently destroyed, sparking a lot of thought on his part. Like, he feels a connection with them, yet also far removed from them as well. He seems to be slowly realizing that the world, or this part of the world at least, is leaving him and his way of life behind; he's a Stone Age relic in a world where more advanced humans are already in the Bronze and Iron Ages, and some of those humans are not just unfriendly, their hostile threats. And Spear may crave human connection, but he's too different for the new place he finds himself in for him to find true peace and fulfillment. On this new continent, he's a man out of time in a poetic sense.
--Spear is desperate, and tries copying Mira's prayer to the moon.
--Fang gets out of her forlorn funk because vikings attack. Vikings riding dire bears!
--The vikings are the slavers working for the Scorpion King we learned about last season.
--Spear acquired a sword. We going Conan, boys. Barbarian class unlocked!
--Mission to track down Mira resumes. Viking village with their slaves discovered.
--Mira is found; objective already achieved on the third episode. At least this won't be dragged out.
--Cliffhanger ending. Spear and Fang are going to have to fight a shit ton of vikings and dire bears next week. Its going to be a bloodbath.

To say tonight's episode of Primal was a bloodbath would be a colossal understatement! High-octane savage action!

--Spear and Fang have to face off a whole squad of dire bear riding viking warriors
--Fang tries to make a dramatic entrance, but the roof couldn't support her weight
--Spear and Fang annihilate the warriors, looking out for each other in the process, and drawing the vikings away from the slaves so they can escape in the forest
--Mira manages to kill a viking and his bear by using their weapons against them
--Then the rest of the entire fucking viking village comes out to try and kill them, warriors no on-duty, non-warriors, the elderly, the women, the children, all of them. Some of them are even wearing their babies on them!
--Spear tries not to kill the children and mothers, but in the chaos of battle, with no stop or mercy from any of these villagers, that becomes impossible to accomplish
--Spear and Fang are decimating their attackers but taking on damage from the sheer numbers they are up against plus the technological superiority they have with the metal weapons and bows-and-arrows, and try to leave, but the village still won't stop attacking them and blocks their avenues of escape.
--Spear and Fang hit their breaking point from getting shit tons of arrows in them and fall into a BLOOD RAGE of epic proportions. With the color palette of this scene, from the perspective of the vikings Spear and Fang come across as unstoppable demons out of a nightmare. Everyone is fucking slaughtered. The whole village wiped out.
--Mira choose to stay behind to help a wounded Spear and Fang leave on one of the viking's boats at the dock
--the viking's chief and eldest son come back from a slave raid trip that morning to discover that their entire village have been destroyed while they were gone, all their loved ones and subjects and friends slain. They mourn, give the funeral rights to the dead, then harden their hearts with hatred and they suit up to get revenge against the "monsters" that took everything they cared about away. And so we have come full circle. This father-son pair is now similar to as Spear and Fang were in episode 1: their family was torn from them, and they want vengeance. Nice to see the vikings get fleshed out a little so they're not just one-dimensional villains. But hey, play stupid games, win stupid prizes. You poked the bear, or in this case, a cave man and a dinosaur, and you faced the consequences of your foolish actions. Not sure how they expect to kill Spear and Fang by themselves, but maybe they'll turn to eldritch magic or another human empire to even the odds.
--The next episode is going to be so wild, Adult Swim was forbidden by Genndy himself from showing any sneak peaks of it in advance. Next Thursday is going to get CRAZY.

Yeah, that was a nice touch. A good callback. Really hammers home that "everyone is the hero of their own story" vibe they were going for. The vikings were antagonists to Spear and Fang, and to us the audience, but from their perspective, they were just trying to defend their homes and avenge their fallen. (Even if their zeal to do so and tactical choices were foolish in the extreme, as it literally got them all killed.) They might as well have been Beowulf or Gilgamesh or Hercules trying to fight off savage monsters, from their point of view. You can see where they are coming from, understand what they are going through, even if they're the baddies in the story. When Spear and Fang normally go on a rampage against their foes, we support them, but now we see the thing we used to shout "Fuck yeah!" for turned on a whole new head when some of the things getting slaughtered include human children and the like. Violence begets violence, and Spear and Fang's actions, even if justified or understandable, have resulted in consequences that will bite them in the ass later down the line. This is the type of storytelling The Last of Us Part 2 tried to tell and fucked up royally! Primal's doing a much better job so far.

You can see how disturbed Spear was when he saw there were children and mothers trying to fight him, but as he was in a life or death situation with a bloodthirsty mob coming after him, he had no time to do anything besides defending himself and losing himself in his anger. But when he accidentally killed that boy, you can see how that messed him up. Right after that, he gets on Fang's back and essentially tells her they're leaving, but the villagers won't let them go and chase after them. Everywhere they turn, they just keep getting attacked and injured until they snap and go full "THAT'S IT, YOU GET WHAT YOU FUCKING DESERVE!" When the fight started, it was on the behalf of Mira to get to safety and pure self-defense, but as the battle went on, they were just trying to cease the attacks against them and find an out, but they kept being pushed deeper into the village, their escape routes blocked, wracking up more and more wounds all the while. And even when they tried to disengage and make a run for it, between the cliff face and the arrow bombardment, the stubborn refusal for the villagers to just let them go even after suffering massive losses, and the horrific agony they're in, it's no wonder Spear and Fang lost their shit and went into a berserker fury. When their rage buttons are pushed, Spear and Fang are like the prehistoric equivalent of the Doom Slayer. Someone should take clips of this episode and set them to Doom's soundtrack.

Yeah, who's to say the vikings weren't slaves themselves in a manner of speaking, being forced to offer thralls in tribute to someone or something else, under the threat of being conquered or killed themselves if they don't appease their more powerful neighbors? We still haven't met those guys from the trailer that looked kinda Egyptian/Assyrian/Babylonian, or that dark god on the throne. I wouldn't be surprised if they were the real power in the region, and the vikings ensured some small measure of independence by placating those guys with shipments of captives. They might be only a tiny cog in a much larger machine.

I'm just glad that Spear and Fang's friendship survived the events of episode 2 this season. I was worried it might have been the beginning of the end of their bond, but thankfully it's as strong as ever. Spear and Fang are truly ride or die, loyal to the end. I find their relationship to just be so genuinely and sincerely wholesome, it's the heart and soul of this entire series.

So, now that it's over I've sat down and watched through all of JW: Camp Cretaceous, mostly for the sake of curiousity and completism. And I can definately say that my rating for it is a solid...



Yeah, nothing I'm gonna watch over and over again, but it had its moments and it didn't feel like it was wasting my time... too much.

The kids were surprisingly tolerable, past the first half of the first season, once we get through all the cringey millennials tropes, and the main story kicks in they do a pretty decent job at making you care for them. Even when they start to ship them togheter in the latter seasons it doesn't feel too sudden or forced.

The dinosaurs and the action is okay, there's a few good set pieces, they try harder than the movies did to bring across that even the big carnivores are not just mindless monsters (except for the hybrids) and it is so far the only JP/JW related thing with two major "dinosaur characters" who were armored herbivores. The Scorpius Rex was pretty creepy too, and at leaast it looked like a creepy messed-up hybrid, which is more of what the Indominus Rex can say. But the dinosaurs also always feel very... rubbery during the action scenes, they jump, bounce, fall and roll around like they weight half of what thei're supposed to. And it's painfully obvious when Universal gave Dreamworks downscaled models of the dinos from the movies and when they had to make their own. Looking at you, Spinosaurus.

The show kinda loses the plot once they leave Nublar. Manta Corp Island is just a confusing mess. I still don't know what locations on it are domed over in the artificial habitats and which are out in the open. And the whole thing with the robots and the eeeevil nerd was infuriatingly stupid. It's like they went "Let's do Dennis Nedry again, but if he was a Discord Moderator" or something. Thank God he wasn't the final, final boss.

The Maximum Stupid tho goes to the tie-in with Dominion, with Dodgson just showing up for an episode and a half, taking a walk through Nublar and just... casually finding the Barbasol can on the ground. What fucking luck! Good thing we needed to include that, both in the show and the movie, truly wouldn't have been the same without it...
