Should get 10 years out of it! Though the one and only time I've tried to take a vacation of my own will, the one to visit you lot out west, fell apart. So my only use for the passport is if someone else is paying, heh.

Taking a Norwegian cruise from Cape Canaveral around the Bahamas, with a stop in Mexico somewhere. Hoping the boat is mostly Boomers, I haven't felt comfortable around people under 50 since I was a teen.

Got my copy of Arks of Omen: Angron, and its one hell of a bloodbath.

The Imperium discovers a psychic beacon from the Dark Age of Technology called the Choral Engine. It kind of acts like the Astronomican both in function and purpose. It not only allows Navigators to do their work on the other side of the Rift and calms the Warp, it also banishes all but the most powerful daemons and its light can be focused on particular locations, which gives a huge boost to psykers.

The psychic beacon is a painful spike in Angron's head, and is determined to destroy it, both to stop the agony and destroy a machine based on cowardly and treacherous sorcery, an affront to Khorne. Also, its supernatural glare dredges up old memories of Big Daddy E, and that really grinds his gears. Angron cares not if Abaddon gets his relic, and cares not for the armies and fleets gathering alongside him on his journey. They will be left behind if they can't keep up, and if they can, then he'll use them like a weapon to reap a bloody harvest. Though there does seem to be a tiny mote of paternal pride for Kharn buried deep down.

A Thousand Sons warband with their own Ark of Omen, having completed their own relic hunt, want to claim the Choral Engine for themselves and offer it up to Tzeentch, and arrive before Angron and his forces do. They discover to their dismay that the planet Malakbael is guarded by the entire Fourth Fleet, having been summoned there because the Grey Knights foresaw Angron's arrival and organized a response in advance. The Thousands Sons fleet are vastly outnumbered and swiftly defeated and so retreat, realizing they have no chance. As soon as they leave, Angron arrives, and a massive space battle is joined.

Angron is in top form here today; he's able to speak, strategize, give orders, and whatnot, making use of his Primarch mental acuity, even with his brain swamped with Chaos juice and the Butcher's Nails, always pounding in his head, even now. Once the battle is underway, he goes half-mad from the agony of the psychic beacon being so close and his impatience to shed blood and take skulls. He flies out in the void, getting blasted to smithereens by warship batteries and orbital canons time and time again, but regens faster than Buu from DBZ. He takes out whole ships, flies down planetside, and begins demolishing fortresses, tanks, aircraft, missile placements and battalions of Imperial forces of every stripe, making his way into the citadel of the Choral Engine.

All the World Eater characters with names get stuff to do and have badass moments. The fight is vicious both in space and on the ground. Chaos has the numbers/ferocity advantage, Imperium has the discipline/coordination advantage. Billions die in a matter of hours. A team of Space Marines and Sisters of Battle manage to board the Ark of Omens the World Eaters brought, and no one knows what transpired within, but it suddenly plunged back into the Warp, and hasn't been seen since, nor the Imperial forces who stormed it.

Angron is unstoppable, he destroys and kills everything in his path like a daemonic Incredible Hulk. Nothing the Imperium can throw at him slows him down. The carnage is so great legions of Khorne daemons are able to manifest despite the Choral Engine's aura and join the fray, including 8 elite Bloodthirsters that act as Angron's honor guard.

Seeing that nothing can stop the foe's assault, the Inquisitor who discovered the Choral Engine orders all the failsafes and limiters removed, and the raw power output overflows enormously and sends out massive psychic shockwaves that banish the daemons back to warp. Only Angron and his 8 Bloodthirsters are strong enough and angry enough to endure, but are severely weakened and can barley move. One by one, even the Bloodthirsters start falling back into the Warp as time passes and they keep getting hounded by Imperial forces.

Angron's fury reaches new heights, as the pain from the Choral Engine is greater than anything he's felt before, hateful of such a disgusting device, but joyful of discovering a true challenge to test himself against, and even if he fails, a small part of him hopes the beacon might annihilate him for good to end his suffering and his servitude to Khorne. He slowly makes his way forwards, hammered but unbowed before the psychic onslaught, advancing faster than his faltering honor guard. Angron falls into a trap, and shit tons of Tempestus Scions lay into him with huge weapons while over 60 Grey Knights decked out in the best gear and weapons bombard him with their own psychic power and banishment spells. Already severely weakened by the Choral Engine, for a hot minuet it seems like even Angron's endless rage might not prevail against such an assault and he might be banished to the Warp for a time, and he falls to one knee, but then the remaining Bloodthirsters enter the room and attack. Their brief distraction is all Angron needs, and he kills all his foes in the room.

Finally standing before the thing causing him so much torment, he's reminded of the Astronomican, of the Emperor, and laying siege to the palace during the Heresy. Starring into the witch-light, he sees a golden figure starring back at him in judgment. His hatred for Big E spills over. Angron's rage becomes transcendental, becoming the essence of anger itself, able to perceive every act of murder and hate and destruction and war in the entire galaxy all at once. He briefly wonders if this is how Khorne perceives the universe. He then senses something else and far more grand and awe-inspiring: reality shudders as Khorne gets off his throne, roars a battle cry, draws his terrible sword that can kill worlds & stars and cut through dimensions, and swings it with the divine wrath of a God, channeling all this incomprehensible power into Angron like a conduit (just like what the Emperor did with Guilly when he smote Nurgle's garden!). Angron leaps into the air and brings his weapons down upon the Engine with the fury of the God of War. The entire planet is destroyed in an apocalyptic explosion, along with everything and everyone on it. The empyric shockwave tears holes in the space-time continuum and sends multiple ships tumbling into the Warp, some popping out in other places and other times, some never being seen from again. Planetary debris crash into ships and several other planets in the solar system. Catastrophic number of deaths for the Imperials.

Khorne's power not only destroys the planet, it sends out a murder-curse, a punishment for mortals meddling with sorcerous technology, using the Choral Engine's vector as a medium, Angron as the sacrificial blade, and the blood-letting of the battle the sacrificial offering, that causes 80% of the surviving Fourth Fleet to immediately become corrupted by Chaos, and start killing anyone they see in a murderous madness, everyone from serfs, scribes, Guardsman, Commisars, Sisters of Battle, Priests, Inquisitors, regular Space Marines, Primaris Space Marines, Navigators, Martian Magos, Titan princeps, etc. Those spared by the murder-curse was thanks only to random chance. Only the Grey Knights, Sisters of Silence, and Custodes were totally immune to the murder-curse.

The Fourth Fleet is mortally wounded as a military force, but still millions strong in spite of that, but what remains of the fleet is declared Excommunicate Traitoris just to be safe, so millions of loyal forces who were lucky enough to avoid the curse are condemned and betrayed for something that they had no hand in. This act by the Imperium will have "far-reaching consequences for years to come". Fourth fleet is a complete loss; given its assets/size/numbers, this means 5% of the Imperium's total military is gone.

Angron's form is vaporized in the cataclysm and for a brief time, as his essence falls back into the Warp, he knows true peace, free from all pain, free from the Butcher's Nails, free from his slavery to Khorne, and he thinks he might finally find the sweet embrace of oblivion, that the blast might have done enough damage to destroy even his immortal soul. But then he regens and pops up on another planet somewhere else in the galaxy, on some other battlefield. He howls in accursed misery, knowing he will never be free. He then takes his anger out on the loyalist forces he finds himself surrounded with. For Angron, there is no escape, no release, only an eternity of slaughter and torment, forever enslaved to the Nails and to his dark master. Blood for the Blood God, Skulls for the Skull Throne.

The Thousand Sons warband has their Ark commandeered by Vashtorr, who turns them around, and searches through the rubble of the dead planet floating in the void, finding the relic he needed: a mysterious black stone that had survived not only the recent explosion but also countless millennia of unimaginable pressures and temperatures in the core of the world prior. Vashtorr retreats back to the Warp with his prize, taking the Thousand Sons with him, intending to offer them bargains back at the Soul Forge.

A huge unequivocal win for Chaos. The Imperium just lost 5% of its entire galactic military force in a single battle. The entire Fourth Fleet is lost; slain, corrupted, and/or excommunicated. A colossal, devastating blow, even in this grimdark setting. The Imperium has no choice but to take an L for this one.

So the spoilers weren't far off! _Silly_! I mean, Angron is literally unstoppable then. If a boosted Holy ray in his face, and the Grey Knights, and whatever else, can't stop him, then nothing short of a deus ex machina will. He gets to win wherever he winds up.

Sounds like a cool battle at least, the Imperium putting up a stout defense but for Literally Unstoppable. Interesting how the Grey Knights were immune to the curse too, they're not inherently immune like the others are.

Khorne getting up to lay down the law is so cool tho! And Angron getting a brief god's-eye view, and a moment of peace. Some really neat ideas in there! That said, I think Chaos is really dumb, especially as they push the metaphysical fate stuff with it, and their apparent immunity to attrition. But eh, the hellhole of the Imperium of Man will put some W's on board soon enough, when the next primarch wakes up!

That's something I've thought about a lot. It seems like for 99% of people, they naturally flow through life. Things just happen, work out well for them, or at least well enough. They go through life, and opportunities present themselves. They gravitate towards the right interests, follow the structure of the system, and to lesser and greater extents, it all works itself out. And if they want to be married, with a decent job, and 2 kids, they'll get that.

I don't begrudge anyone for it. It's more that I wonder what the hell I did so wrong, and you by extension, to be infinitely far away from any of that. "Try harder and self-improve" is not something the average person needs to do much of in their life. Talking to some of my old friends, they didn't think or self-improve a bit to get to their relatively well-off positions. They went with the flow. Apparently I was swimming against it!

That's something I've thought about a lot. It seems like for 99% of people, they naturally flow through life. Things just happen, work out well for them, or at least well enough. They go through life, and opportunities present themselves. They gravitate towards the right interests, follow the structure of the system, and to lesser and greater extents, it all works itself out. And if they want to be married, with a decent job, and 2 kids, they'll get that.

I don't begrudge anyone for it. It's more that I wonder what the hell I did so wrong, and you by extension, to be infinitely far away from any of that. "Try harder and self-improve" is not something the average person needs to do much of in their life. Talking to some of my old friends, they didn't think or self-improve a bit to get to their relatively well-off positions. They went with the flow. Apparently I was swimming against it!

In my experience, while I don't want to be like everyone else, I couldn't be if I tried. Been like that since I was a little boy, remember being in first grade and walking to class with some friends (who had the same first name as me), and being completely uninterested in the pop music they were talking about. And then fashion, money, popularity, luxuries, I never really wanted any of the "normie" goals in life. But those goals are what motivates people to participate, because who would put up with modern life otherwise? Which isn't a good thing, since my family is not wealthy, and I'm not autistic or otherwise mentally impaired enough (as far as I know) to get welfare. So there's a timebomb that's going to go off one day.

not everyone wants life goals and that is fine.

but generally speaking it is generally a good idea to plan somewhat for your own future like retirement and what not.
