I finally think I'm done with this run of Crusader Kings III, after playing it pretty obsessively for one week. I pretty much did everything I set out to do, which was:

- Unite Britannia (and rename it Avalon)
- Create the Kwisatz Haderach without incesting it up too much (well... at least for a while)
- Play tall, i.e. get super developed technologically as quick as possible.

Also, have fun with the new DLC's I hadn't played until now.

So, I started out with Alfred the Great, created England, stayed in the Catholic Church for a few generations, although I early on created my own hybrid culture (also named Avalon... with a double "ll", because I'm dumb sometimes), which I never expanded beyond six counties, since technological progresss is tracked across cultures not total regions owned. Then went for the "tech rush" buildings, i.e. development enhancers.

As I said, I stayed with the catholic church for a while, because you can ask the pope for money every two years, which helps out a lot with the finances. But when my third character finally united Britannia, it seemed more advantageous to create Avalons on Christian faith... of course named Avalon Christianity. So, the usual stuff, Carnal Exaltations, because I find a sex-positive faith worthwhile, Legalism, because this way you can trick the succession problem for your offspring (use an elective system for your titles, with the Legalism tenet electors vote for your candidate if you got the Just trait, always groom your designated heir(s) for also having the Just trait. Then, pass on all your to your grandkid, THEN do the election stuff and suicide your character, for which the Just trait also is great (attempt murder on everyone you see, for each time you click the order, you get stress. Get stressed out three or four times in a row, boom, you either suicide or abdicate). With your new character you just need to revoke the previous capitals duchy with all counties from whomever they ended up with and presto, succession without Primogeniture solved.

I ended going up the tech tree so quickly, that I was basically done with the third era at about 50% of its runtime, i.e. for an era of 200 years for high medieval times, I was through the tech tree after 113 years.

Anyway, with the usual Eugenics program I managed to get all the best positive traits onto my family without marrying more than cousins to another in about four generations. Then I managed to get the Pure-Blooded trait into my family and when I had some male and female kids with the traits, THEN I started to marry them with another, since Pure-Blooded cancels out inbreeding 100% if you got two people who both have the trait. ^^

Yeah, yeah, the Habsburgs only got weird faces out of it, I got basically Superman.

Anyway, since the season pass for Midnight Suns was on sale (-25% off the price), I got it and now I'm committed to finally playing the damn game.

SciFlyBoy wrote:As someone who'd never worked a manual labor job I feel my opinion doesn't have much weight. This is my insight though; I feel if your job includes the major body motions then yeah. If you do vertical pushes and pulls (Lifting objects above your head/pulling yourself up) Horizonal pushes and pulls (Pushing objects in front of you, pulling them towards you) Squats and Hinges (Lifting equipment off the floor, standing up and walking around with heavy equipment) and you do that all day then yeah, that counts as a workout.

Hm. Not much exertion per se, definitely not akin to weight lifting, where you target muscle groups to exhaustion. More endurance, being on the feet for a full day, squatting down over and over, doing stuff above my head. Tired and weaker by the end of the day, but there isn't much actual muscle wear and tear, hence why I'm not huge. And why 8+ hour days are even possible, while an hour of lifting leaves my muscles dead, heh.

Spartanburger wrote:From my perspective, I feel like using your job to fulfill the resolution goes against the spirit of a new years resolution. Your job is something you'd be doing anyway, regardless of whether or not you made that promise to yourself. To me, a New Years Resolution would have to be something more than what you would normally be doing had you not made the resolution in the first place.

My only other thought is that, the labor you do might not be working out all areas of your body. There could be some areas being neglected, and it could be beneficial from a pure health and safety standpoint to design a workout that strengthens those areas. You're only as strong as your weakest part. One slip up at work, and all the strength you've built up from work could get suddenly transferred to a weak part of your body that doesn't normally get worked and then suddenly you're bedridden for a week and have a hospital bill to pay.

I thought about this for a bit. There's really 2 spirits to the resolution; One is the actual physical benefits, the second is to get myself into more consistently good habits. So even if I count my job as some kind of hybrid cardio/low weight/high rep exercise, that does entirely ignore the other spirit, which as you pointed out, is also something I'm obligated to do rather than corralling my laziness.

Yeah, one issue is that there really isn't any muscle group I _can_ really beat up while we're busy. Legs are shot by Friday regardless (really need to see a doctor at some point, a decade of knee pain and I'm losing the ability to bend my left), arms needed to do everything, back for safety (ladders and lifting machines). My chest doesn't get much use, not much pushing, though any motion that targets the pecs also exhausts the triceps. But my core might work, do a bunch of planks for as long as I can. What lifting I have to do on the job is far more arms and back then tummy.

Dragaros wrote:I suppose it depends. If you take your New Year’s resolutions as more like guidelines or reminders than hard rules for yourself, then I’d say yes. But if you’re a hardcore “spirit of the law” kind of guy and take resolutions as serious promises or challenges to yourself, then I’d argue no.

Myself, I'm a guidelines man, when it comes to New Year’s resolutions.

I take 'em seriously, and make an effort, but I also don't expect to get them all. Been pretty good the last few years, low as I set the bar, hit around 75% each time. Though one of them for this year is already blown due to economic conditions, sadly. Though with being fairly busy the last month and change, I'm just happy to see my anemic accounts go _up_ again, and personal improvements are taking an unfortunate back burner.

magnuskn wrote:Can't speak to that, because every time I've tried getting into lifting weights, etc. on a regular basis, it lasted two months at tops, then I either felt I got better stuff to do or got sick and lost all my progress. What I've been doing is a calorific deficit diet, which so far has downed 16 kilos in 6 months. And it works pretty easy, I just got to calculate what my daily intake is and stay below that to a certain degree. I actually eat ice cream and other sweets quite a lot, but in clear measurements per day. On a four days a week basis, i.e. Saturday, Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday I can eat 500 calories of sugary stuff, which comes up to about 150 grams of it, the other days its just my normal two meals at about 600 - 700 calories each... since some of the microwave food I eat at work comes out to only 400 calories, I can then eat an additional single ice cream cone, which weighs in at 200 calories.

Doesn't help that I'm definitely getting older and simply can't recover fast enough to really hit the weights hard every night. I do chest, that's it for at least 5 days, for example.

I used to calorie count much more seriously, and managed a nearly 0-sugar diet for a while, but I've since relaxed it into a general sense of knowing roughly what I'm taking in and what I need. Keeps me around 23.5 BMI, so I have buffer room, but don't look terrible to my own eyes. Wouldn't mind losing the love handles, they look weird when all the rest of me is so lean. Sugar is the devil tho, sneaks in everything, adds a couple hundred calories here and there, and mixing that and booze during lockdowns got me up to 220 lbs briefly!

TTTX wrote:I say it depends how hard the manual labor job is and which parts of your body you use the most.

Could be harder! I swear, every Boomer I know talks about how much harder they worked, how they lifted twice as much weight, 12 hours a day every day, and were supermen who worked worked worked and never complained or slacked, and I'm fairly sure they're completely full of shit.

Suspicious!

With your new character you just need to revoke the previous capitals duchy with all counties from whomever they ended up with and presto, succession without Primogeniture solved.

I followed very little of that, but it sounded tremendously Machiavellian, so well done! That the game systems support that kind of complex interactions is a credit to the devs.

I ended going up the tech tree so quickly, that I was basically done with the third era at about 50% of its runtime, i.e. for an era of 200 years for high medieval times, I was through the tech tree after 113 years.

I finished my short campaign victory for Nkaari. And discovered Immortal Empire campaigns don't _count_ for the campaign victory achievement. Which was very annoying, because that's all I've been doing in my post-work fugue the last few days, was pushing for just that. I'd vassalized the Donut, secured 3 castles on the Britannia coast, and was up to tier 5. All I needed was to occupy a few more towns, but there were _endless_ Brit/Empire/Welf stacks coming at me, and it was either fight that tide or go at the Delves to the same effect. Had to win a lot of massive siege defenses, my poor daemon prince general lost his army at least 4 times, but eventually I got the money (and more vassals) to build end-game armies back at base, and when they touched shore I could finally push inward. And discovered, as I took the former Welf forest, that I picked the wrong campaign. Whoops!

Yeah, CA definitely needs to fix achievements for TW:WH3, including porting over the ones for races from the previous games. It robs completing campaigns of a bit of its fun if all you have for it is a little screen at the end which states that you achieved victory. At least in TW:WH2 you smashed to the records screen when it happened and afterwards got your little pop-up and you could get achievements out of it.

https://www.warhammer-community.com/202 ... or-oghram/

"The fate of a world hangs in the balance, and you decide whether it’s saved by the Space Marines or consumed by the Tyranids in a massive global battle to celebrate the new edition of Warhammer 40,000.
Oghram is the outermost planet of the Formidyre system in the Bastior War Zone, and one of the key battlegrounds in the Fourth Tyrannic War. It’s in a pivotal position in the path of the oncoming swarm – will its defiance become a legendary note of hope, like noble Macragge, or will it become just the latest world stripped lifeless by the insatiable hunger of the Tyanids? You can help decide its fate.
Pre-order the Leviathan boxed set this Saturday and among the stacks of miniatures inside you’ll find a special single-use code to join the Battle for Oghram. This is your invitation to fight for the fate of the planet, and earn the victorious faction priority access to exciting new reveals in the next Warhammer 40,000 preview.
Once the campaign begins on the 26th of June, you’ll have 13 days to muster your forces, and log the results of your first game playing the new edition. Your epic victory or crushing defeat will help decide whether the world survives the xenos onslaught or falls to the might of Hive Fleet Leviathan.
Both the Space Marines and the Tyranids still have plenty of new miniatures waiting to be unveiled, and the winning faction will have all of their upcoming releases shown off first.
You will have the chance to win every single one of these new and unseen reinforcements when you take part in the global battle – no matter which side you fight for."

GW, if the Tyranid players win the day, don't be cowards and re-write or retcon the results, like you've done before in the past.

Friggin' Med 2 had _great_ faction specific cutscenes, and great agent ones too! Shogun 2 continued the latter, but c'mon. These games are giant, expensive productions, meaningful ending scenes is not a lot to ask after a long, bloody war.

Gosh, been a while since they've done this. I assume they have a predetermined outcome in mind, and the effect the player has is "to what severity." Though Grimgor totally should've killed Archaon, that would've been 1000% more fun than what we got.

So I just spent the last week or two playing the Metro series. It is so fucking fun. It totally hits my niche of nuclear action game with a hint of superstition and supernatural.
I think the nuclear-punk revival of the Chernobyl series has made me go back to these games that have been just gathering dust in my library.

I can't wait for the next one, I just have no idea where they're gonna take it.

Well, with STALKER 2 unlikely to release soon for...obvious reasons, better enjoy post-nuclear/supernatural where you can. Have you read Roadside Picnic, the inspiration for STALKER? I have the novel, but it's in the "probably will never read" pile.

Eastern European games have a certain charm (and jank) to them that's unreplaceable.

Metro is in a similar boat, but they're in Malta now so, maybe not.

I have not.
I was considering picking up the Metro books but I hear they go a little too "russia philosophy" heavy. So....maybe not...

I'm on the fence about starting another mobile game. Teetering between Arknights (which just looks so hot) and Senran Kagura: New Wave (the mobile installment of one of my most favorite series). Anyone have experience with either of those games?

On another note, I've been growing my mustache out to see if it's a strength of mine. I'd like to get it to sit over my beard in a 'Broge?' style. Freaking whiskers though, they're so stiff and stubborn they want to go where they please. The hair's so thin, too. I feel like only 12 hairs make up the tips. Anyone have experience rocking a stache?

I've heard the books are decent, for what it's worth. I'm not sure what "Russia Philosophy" is beyond depression and Dostoyevsky, but in the context of post-nuclear subterranean life, sounds fun!

My mustache is the strongest bit, in fact. Wearing a beard right now, though it's borderline dense enough to pull off. The hair patterns, and hairs themselves, are absolute chaos. But I was going on my various flights last month, I did notice the solo-stache is definitely popular among 25-45 year olds, at least more than it has been. The stiffest hairs grow on the corner of my mouth, and curve inward, so I have to trim them every 3 or so days to avoid being poked. Otherwise once a week try to flatten it as much as possible, trim along the upper lip line. Would like to grow the sides longer, but the direction of growth is "into my mouth," so I have to go out a few mms into the cheeks when cutting, which you may not.

So that giant cloud of smoke blowing down from those Canada forest fires are hitting me in my neck of the woods. Smokey haze over everything. Can taste it in your throat. A constant smell of burning in the air. At least it's not as bad was what NY is getting:

You gotta wonder what dark rituals Blizzard did to get that effect for their advertisements.

The haze cleared up a lot today, but yesterday was nearly as bad as NYC. They got it a bit worse, but around noon we had the yellow, apocalyptic looking sky. Was neat, smelled kinda nice, and I at least had no breathing issues. Shame about the, you know, massive wildfires and such. Competent forestry is in short supply, I suppose. Canary in the coal mine for other, even more vital positions.
