DisplayPort is better for high-resolution displays, and can transmit more data. I got two 3840 x 1600 ultrawide displays.

I'm also planning on upgrading to a single Ultra-Ultrawide display (55' monitor with a 7680 x 2160 resolution) when a.) those monitors are widely available (the first one from Samsung is probably becoming available for sale in three months) and b.) there are graphic cards out which actually support so much data being transported, i.e. in 2025 when the 5000'er series by NVidia comes out with DisplayPort 2.1 connectors, instead of the 1.4 connectors even the 4090 is still using. I'll upgrade to that and two 4K monitors on top of the one Ultra-Ultrawide monitor.

As a matter of contrast, I'm using a 3070ti to play Chrono Trigger, wherein my modern PC is recreating 10 pixel faces with a 1900x1080 resolution. I could do the math here to figure out how many actual pixels are simulating game pixels, but eh. You're describing some pretty nutty tech there tho. Is the extra resolution a notably major leap like when we went from CRTs to plasmas?

Well, as always with higher resolution you get much crisper images, which is why I want to upgrade to 4K in the next years with the new screen. 1900x1080 seems a bit like the stone ages to me, to be honest. ^^

It was specifically female Shepard and Liara, if I recall. This was back when Obama was running on "marriage is between a man and a woman," for context. Seems so quaint in hindsight, like an old friend you loved to fight with. Back when Jack Thompson was the worst person in gaming. Meeemories, like the corners of my mind~

Hah! I wouldn't mind grabbing a new GPU, both as a precautionary measure and because the 40x0 series isn't terribly pricy, but eh. This PC should last 5 more years, assuming I don't break it with additional moments of stupidity (though it's worrying how I've had 1 SSD failure and a GPU port failure already) before I need to really worry. I mostly play old games anyway, other than Cyberpunk. Other stuff I'd like to buy with my limited income! Mainly food!

Yeah, food is kinda necessary. ^^ Each one to his financial abilities, eight years ago I couldn't have afforded at all the stuff I'm getting now. I just got lucky that kinda stumbled into a well paying job.

That’s the funny thing. Back in the day, FemShep fucking Liara in ME1 was a HUGE DEAL. Today, a dude fucks a bear, and nobody cares. 16 years of cultural change and the Overton Window shifting will do that.
Games like Doom, Quake, Mortal Kombat, Diablo 2, Far Cry 2, Resident Evil, and Counter-Strike were blamed by both sides of the political isle in the 90s and early 2000s for turning kids into psycho school shooters; some of today's games are a 100 times more violent and bloody and no one bats an eye.
Live long enough and you see how things change in public perception. Really weird is when you live long enough to see the script get flipped and things people once defended or even championed they now object to, and vice versa. There are people who supported Grand Theft Auto 3 and Vice City but would later go on to attack future titles in the series over the exact same things. There are folks who hated games like Bully or Conker's Bad Fur Day initially but are now among their biggest advocates. And that's just sticking to the tiny microcosm of video games.

Well, my day was a bit stressful. Get up nice and early, have a light breakfast, out the door before 8 AM. Few hours later, find out my grandma had a heart attack. "Widowmaker," 100% blockage. Had been having chest pain for several days, though told no one, until today, when her arm went numb too. Thankfully my aunt raced over here and took her to the ER in time. Doctors were originally checking for a stroke, until someone thought to do an EKG and noticed no blood was moving around. Immediate emergency surgery. Cleared the blockage, discovered a second one, 80%, which is going to be taken care of on Thursday. She's stable and resting now, last I heard.

A hair away from death, because she didn't want to tell her daughter she was having chest pains. Got very lucky. Hopefully she remains lucky.

And I hope you guys all had better days.

sorry to hear that, my grandfather was like that too and it almost cost him his life as well, but luck was on his side (a doctor on vacation found him lying at the side of the road after a walk he was taking) and he lived for like 2 more years

Oh, crap. I really hope she gets better. I'm basically in low-level fear for the health of my mom all the time (she'll be 80 years old next year), so I can empathize.

Oh man, sorry to hear that. My deepest sympathies for your grandmother, you and the rest of your family for that scare. Glad to hear the doctors were able to turn the tide in time.
Yeah, when it comes to chest pains, tell a doctor or a loved one right away. It can literally be the difference between life and death. A false alarm is better than being too late.

Well, good news. Visited her at the hospital today with my father. She's awake and alert. Very tired. But she already feels better (one would assume) after having the blocked artery cleared. They're not sure still if they should do the second 80% blocked one, but they might release her as soon as tomorrow. Though she was very, very close to just outright dying if she hadn't called my aunt when she did and got to the ER when she did.

Thank you. And yeah, as much as I delay/ignore medical treatment for various things, when it comes to the heart or the head, I don't mess around.

TTTX wrote:sorry to hear that, my grandfather was like that too and it almost cost him his life as well, but luck was on his side (a doctor on vacation found him lying at the side of the road after a walk he was taking) and he lived for like 2 more years

Thank you. I was thinking of that. She's otherwise in remarkable health for 89, so 2 more years shouldn't be asking too much, though I imagine this will greatly increase her chance of future heart attacks. Luck runs out, sadly.

Thank you. Yeah, I'm becoming more and more aware my parents are getting old too. Supposed to hike a small section of the Appalachian trail with my mother in a month or two, we'll see how that goes. But today I was helping my father split a fallen tree into firewood (wood splitter), and even he was admitting he's lost a lot of his vitality. Used to do the whole thing himself for fun. Now he needs constant breaks, and my help. Which wasn't the greatest of timing, given it was very hot and humid today, and I have a bad twinge from my neck to left shoulder that is hurting quite badly right now. But he needed help, and I'll be damned if I ignore that as he ages.

Thank you, all of you lads. My brother was ready to fly up here at a moment's notice, and otherwise I think nearly all the family has visited her or will before she's discharged. For all the grief I give modern life, medicine, and "experts," doctors are one of those rare few people I always respect and wish fortune for. Assuming they're competent anyway, heh.

(My false alarms a few years back cost me thousands of dollars, I'm still pissed at myself)

In lighter news, finished a run of Chrono Trigger. Used to play it every year or two, first time as a boy learning how SNES9x worked, but haven't in at least a decade. Still holds up, despite me knowing everything still. Got the normal ending, of course, and cleared just about every quest I could find. The "new" anime cutscenes were a nice touch (I think that was the PS1 Final Fantasy Chronicles edition), and the ending one in particular was exactly what I'd wanted from the ending for all these years.

There's some new content too, I assume from the DS version. The Lost Sanctum was an interesting idea, add a little hub/story area, with decent to useful loot. I liked the subplot about the village, I liked the missions themselves, the time jumping, and the unspoken puzzle with the stones. All good stuff. However, the map design was so painful it must have been on purpose. At one point, the party must run up and 3 zones, over and over and over, well beyond sanity. And so much of that is useless space, or composed of ladders to slow you down even more. Then, there's only 3 mandatory enemy encounters on that route, each way. But only 1 of the 3 can be resolved by Auto-combat (fast forward everything, melee attacks only), because the other 2 packs require magic spells to kill them. So the result is you doing the same, empty, boring path for half an hour, while being forced to engage in the combat twice, for no appreciable XP gains on enemies you outleveled long before you got the Epoch.

Silly. But on NG+, portals open on the world map, which is supposed to lead to a new ending for the DS. So I'm very curious where that goes. Also Crono/Magus/Ayla is a power-trio.

Heh, I don't even know where the hell my GBA is anymore. But I still have my old, original Gameboy; the one I got back in 1992. Still works, too! They built those things to last, man!

I've heard good things about them, but I never had a Sega system growing up.
But that Sega-made JP arcade game? And the one they later did for Lost World? Oh, those machines ate my quarters like hotcakes!

My old Genesis still worked as of 10 years ago. If my mother has tossed it out since then, might still! Though it became incredibly sensitive to any vibrations, a heavy step could freeze it. My old Gameboys probably still work...my launch 360 somehow avoided the RROD, worked all the way through Dark Souls 2. Haven't hooked it up since then, kinda afraid to, lest I ruin the memory.

"Everyone who bought Warhammer 40,000: Leviathan was invited to take part in the Global Battle for Oghram using the code on a flyer included in the box. Warhammer fans from around the world have duked it out with their Space Marines and Tyranids, deciding the fate of this teeming hive world in the Segmentum Pacificus. The battle is finally over, the dust has settled, and the results have been etched in stone, changing Warhammer history forever – the Tyranids have triumphed against a formidable Space Marine counterattack.

As the Grendyllus tendril uncoiled across the Formidyre System, its ravenous swarms descended upon the hive world of Oghram. The planet’s skies darkened with sporestorms and billions-strong swarms of winged bio-horrors, and it seemed Oghram was surely doomed. Yet the Imperial defenders stood firm. For every tide of Tyranids that overran artillery emplacements or boiled through breaches in Imperial fortifications, another was crushed beneath the treads and guns of massed tank formations, strafed to ruin by relentless wings of gunships, or cut to pieces by coordinated Space Marine strikes. Hope was kindled from embers to a roaring fire amongst the bloodied defenders as the Solblade fleets returned from the furthest reaches of the Bastior Sub-sector to reinforce the Formidyre System. Fresh hosts of Humanity’s most potent warriors streaked down through the atmosphere in heavy landers and Drop Pods to join the fray. From Oghram’s sprawling factory hives to its subterranean engine-spires, from the city-sized spaceport of Saint’s Stair to the infested nightmare of its southern polar chem swamps, warriors of the Imperium turned back the xenos flood with guns blazing.

Yet the hunger of the Great Devourer is not so easily denied. Like a wounded beast, the Tyranid swarms reacted as one and lashed out with ferocious force. The fortress line on the Matasori Delta fell, defenders rotted alive by the thick bio-smog of countless toxin-beasts. Great Hive Thaddorius became a slaughterhouse after three million bioforms broke in via its aquifer shrines. The Imperial retreat across the Jatasora Heights ended in disaster after fast-moving swarms overran flank defence forces and encircled the fleeing Imperial armies. Finally, in the planet’s last hours, what vital relics and personnel could be salvaged were extracted from Oghram at great cost in rearguard troops and escorting void ships. They left behind a world that seethed with Tyranids in their billions, a planet whose hive cities had become hollowed-out mausoleums, and whose billions of inhabitants had been consumed by the hive fleet, their biomass already being transformed into fresh broods of warrior organisms to invade the other neighbouring worlds. Despite the defenders’ most valiant efforts, Oghram was doomed. With its fall, the entire Formidyre System – including the vital Anchor World of Sanctum – was placed in greater peril than ever before…"

"Amongst the teeming multitude of ravenous horrors that make up the Tyranid Hive Fleets, there are a few towering beasts that stride above the swarm – the will of the Hive Mind made manifest in an abhorrent behemoth. The latest of these are the Norn Emissary and the Norn Assimilator, creatures spawned when the Hive Mind has a crucial goal it simply must accomplish.

The Norn Emissary is perhaps the ultimate synapse creature, bigger and nastier than even a Hive Tyrant. They are evolved for the singular purpose of preying on gifted commanders or abducting knowledgeable prey from heavily defended strongholds. Before battle, the Norn Queen imbues this goliath with the distilled knowledge it needs to succeed in its mission, which it prosecutes with a combination of brute strength and incredible psionic power, backed up by a frankly unnatural degree of agility for a creature of its size.

If the Norn Emissary is the brainy avatar of the Hive Fleet, the Norn Assimilator is its raw strength made flesh. When the Hive Fleet has decided that a particular prey-creature or fortification must be eliminated, it sends forth an inexhaustible Norn Assimilator. In the face of such raw alien power, running is the only sensible decision. In its infinite alien wisdom, the Hive Mind has already thought this through, so the Norn Assimilator packs a pair of massive toxinjector harpoons to pinion its prey in place."

Eyyy, the bugs won. Good for them. I suspect a lot of votes were phoned in specifically to see the spess mehrines take an L, heh. New forms are...well, just old forms with remixed size and features. Given the gimmick, tyranids should have more divergent forms than life on a planet, instead of a stock template mutated to fit.
