Now obviously this is assuming the officer in question is as good as we'd expect an officer to be. If they meet that standard then they honestly will be doing their job to the utmost of their ability. And their job is a dangerous one.
I think that is all balanced out by having a pension, which officers in my state do, as well as teachers and public employees. Hell, most of my state's budget is just to cover the cost of their pensions.

Fucking travesty.
See that's where military spending should go, to the soldiers, their care and aftercare.
At least a bit more than already does.
Well, you could argue that money spent on better equipment means the better chances of soldiers getting less injured. I don't know about military careers because only half my family served in the military, but only for their required duties. They quickly got out and got jobs, so I don' t know what the pay is like or military benefits. Besides quarters, food and such.

Basically after taxes, meal plan that we can't opt out of, and whatnot...Your average Private was getting 600 a paycheck back.
By the end of my contract was making 1200 a check, only because I opted out of the meal plan. I was never on post long enough to take advantage of the dining facility.
Our medical care was...drink water, take some tylenol. I popped my knee cap out of place and I got little more than some OTC drugs for the swelling.
We're treated like dogshit for low pay and a country that notionally supports us until we say something they don't like.
But it's paying for college now, so there's that.

Both my parents were nurses in the Air Force. I'll have to ask them what military medicine was like.
On an unrelated note, I'm still trying to get my smog certification passed. I have three of the four sensors cleared, but the oxygen heat sensor hasn't turned on yet. Been well over a week and a half, 300 miles and a full tank. Even took it to my dealership who has a guy who drives engine cycles specifically for smog checks and had it there for two days. At lunch today I turned my engine on and ran the defrost, A/C and rear defrost for 20 mins while I read a book. 'A Walk In The Woods' by Bill Bryson, if you're curious.

I can see why sports players that are representing a country get a lot of money since their faces will be seen everywhere and on everything, but when a soldier or a police officer earn less or just as much as less risky jobs like a clarinet player do, then people probably won't go for those careers unless they have a urgent sense of duty or need to help other people or something like that. At least, I wouldn't. Not that I can become a police officer or soldier, anyway.
That's probably one of the reasons why there's a noticeable lack of teachers, doctors and police officers here, since they don't earn more than a much simpler/risk-free job does.

If you're in a high risk job, you should be paid more than some burger flipper at McDonalds.
I'm not saying they shouldn't make a living wage, they're performing a service as well. But being a Soldier then going into Law Enforcement, you should be making more than just barely enough to get over the poverty line, devotion to duty or no.

Especially when the military career is more physically (and sometimes mentally) demanding than most average joe jobs.

Re: Tali'Thread vas Clan Zorah nar BSN 6.0
I don't think policing should be a 'in it for the reward' kind of a job, like crab fishermen. There's no talent involved with policing or firefighting, unlike entertainment or sports. How many people can do the job of a policeman versus the job of a crab fisherman or clarinetist or basketball player?
For one thing, I personally know that if the clarinetist plays two wrong notes, they're fired, so it's a job where absolute perfection is required, unlike sports. How many shots did the best sports player ever miss?
My dad has had guns and knives pointed at him, but I didn't see anyone arguing that nurses should get paid more and he actually really saved lives and help bring people back to life.
In the end it's a job. We all have them. Some of us create our own job and make as much as we want. Some of us don't care and just want work to do. Some of us want more. They're all valid. And on top if it all, it's an argument that will never end.

Well, I'd argue that a police officer should know how to defuse a situation without having to reach for their weapons. That takes at least a little social talent.
With exceptions, of course.

Re: Tali'Thread vas Clan Zorah nar BSN 6.0
It takes a lot more fortitude to be able to fight after infiltrating 12 miles into enemy territory carrying 150 pounds worth of gear, ammunition, and various weapon systems.
Then you get to walk back. Whether or not you're carrying your dead is dependent on them being able to survive the fight. Then you get some chow, rearm, maybe grab some rack time and do it again.
And we get paid peanuts compared to a sandwich artist at subway.
Something is amiss. Despite Theo's disregard for military personnel, the fact he's able to say such shittery is because my predecessors saw it fit to fight against tyranny and oppression.
We should be paid more.

Well the reward aspect determining pay would be used as an incentive to stay at it.
And there's a large amount of talent involved in policing, firefighting, and military work. To have social skills, tact, professionalism, and sheer physical ability is huge. There's a reason I'm classified as a warrior athlete. No matter the situation I got it done.
It's not point and click, it's actually being able to shoot, move, communicate concisely with high efficiency. In policing it's ensuring the people are obeying the law and serving said people with equal application of the law no matter their standing. With firefighting it's enduring the enormous stress of saving people and fighting a massive blaze.
Saying that there's no talent involved is an insult.

Must be a Texas thing.
Here the police are generally affable people who respect the law and the people. We've had a few incidents but overall the police up here handle most high stress situations with words, dontcha know?
However when it comes to violence we're far more precise. The training is far more intensive for conflict resolution. This summer I'll be taking part in the Police Explorers, a training program to help green officers deal with training in a realistic environment. That's a requirement for my degree.

You can be the best in the world at being semi-fit, occasionally push a pencil, and be willing to follow orders, but in the end all you are good at is being fit, pushing a pencil, and following orders.
Plus they do make more money. In benefits. Healthcare, pensions, stuff like that.

Well, it's not talent, but conditioning isn't it? How many people are able to enter the military each year with no knowledge and skill and how many are able to be conditioned to do the job? And it happens over and over and over every year, otherwise we wouldn't have a military today. I think the amount of people who can be conditioned into a job is far greater then people who are able to hone a talent. Not saying someone who is conditioned can't find talent in what they're doing or are untalented.
I compare that against how many people can be handed an instrument and make music out of it. I think that number is far smaller. And that's my life, I chose it when I was a teenager and became all too aware of how talent plays into a career. That's my personal feelings on talent since it's an important factor in what I do.

It's a mix of both.
But you can't be a leader without some latent talent inside. Most military have that leadership quality already. The majority of people who only go one contract don't have that, and end up doing something completely different. I got out due to injury, yet I'm swinging right back into a demanding job involving the protection of the people. I had a natural talent influencing even the most stubborn of soldier to do as he's told. I would've made a great NCO and I kind of regret not staying in.
But that's neither here nor there.

My abilities to influence others hovers around nil. I lack the charisma and abilities to effectively connect with an individual on that kind of level. I'm more of a behind the scenes kind of character myself. I'll have others do my expressing for me.

I think I might have an issue with cheese. Lately I haven't been eating any because of my diet, but occasionally I'll put a slice on something and the next day I just have terrible bowel movements. Used to eat it a lot, but now that it's kind of sparse I'm seeing some results that are troubling. Hopefully it's not the case. I love cheese.

@Alien: I'm picturing ole' Rowboat coming to terms with the fact that the Imperial Truth is about the only thing keeping mankind together. That and he'll probably demand to see the Emperor, I have a gut feeling about that.
@Sci: Lactose intolerance? White folks have the mutation to handle dairy better as we mature, but I know when I stopped dairy (Not on purpose) in college for a while, it took some...difficulties...to get my tolerance back up.

Sit with your back straight, close your eyes. Inhale slowly four seconds, hold your breath for four seconds, exhale for four seconds, do that for five minutes and don't think about anything other than feeling the air moving in and out of your body.
You'll feel better afterwards.

Hm. Gotta upgrade the vid card first though. GTX1080 is getting a price cut to $500 or so because of the Ti, so depending on how hard the medical system fucks me on the ER bill, I'd like to upgrade before ME4. Any good benchmarks on the Ryzen out yet?
