Been using the Nesbox recently. Real fucking shame that the damn thing didn't get a full release on xbox but it still works great on it's Internet browser.

If the creator just does some bug fixes and put in a save feature and it'll be fantastic. Also need to hope that no one comes and shut down his project down.

Grandmother comes home from the casinos, right hand full of bloody tissue. Apparently she fell getting off the bus, pinky's torn open at the base, possibly broken, and no one stopped to help her. Thankfully my nearest aunt was able to drive over on a moment's notice to take her to the hospital, since an ambulance ride would be ruinously expensive. Rough evening.

In regards to the hypothetical, I'm kinda surprised with your answers. I ascribed blame most heavily to the lazy coworker, but also the manager, and all the way up to the owners, really. Every link in the leadership chain I hold responsible for how their business is run, though to lesser and greater extents. The manager is more to blame than the CEO, obviously, and the coworker is the most to blame since it's his behavior that is the problem. Interesting responses.

Thought experiment.

You have just been teleported back to the 1400s in medieval Europe. King Person comes up to you and says, "You are my kingdoms primary Doctor now. All Doctors and surgeons will take orders from you, come to you for advice, and defer to your judgment."

How well do you think you'd do?

Putting aside my chronic illness that'll give me crippling pains if I'm without my meds for just a day, I don't think I'd make a very good doctor. Cutting in people is not something I'd enjoy, I doubt putting gauze on everything that's bleeding will help and I don't know what the hell I'd do if something's broken. I'm not exactly the poster child of health either.

Depending on where I was placed and at what point in the 1400's I think I could do okay.
Most of the items needed to make a Distillery for making clean water exist/could in theory be made in this time period and with knowledge or basic cleanliness and the source of the Black Death I am sure a lot of the problems could be mitigated.

If I were, say, the head surgeon of Venice and I had the King's approval and weight of voice I am sure I could have the king put in a decree to scour every ship that docks and kill rats.
Teaching surgeons and other doctors about keeping clean may be more difficult as the items to make our hands clean won't be made for another hundred or so years at least when whaling is a thing so making spirits/high alcohol content liquids would be a necessity for sterilization. Hence the need for a distillery/still. And they may not always follow as there is still a highly religious overview in Europe so these science based discoveries may be labelled as blasphemy until the act of simply being cleaner may help see their necessity.

I don't think I'd be able to do too well with infection though. General surgery would also be slightly difficult as Ether will not be widespread to be used as an anesthetic, despite it's discovery in the 1200's. I might be able to order it in as the King's surgeon but I am not sure if that'd help out all of Europe.

I might be able to help general cleanliness in the period, depending on if I am sent after the printing press is invented as I could at least have someone make up a paper to be published around Europe.

That is also taking into account if I can even speak/read the languages of the 1400's as in 1400 English is kinda a mix of French and Latin and a touch of Swedish sounding at this time.

Sickness aside, I doubt you'd go hungry unless the village/town is easily convinced that everything strange is witchcraft. Besides, potatoes have all the vitamins you'll need.

I'd get about 6 women pregnant before they'd figure out I know nothing.

Kidding aside, I'd do pretty good. Clean water, washed hands, fully cooked food and not sleeping in actual shit will do wonders to the medieval body. Plus I wouldn't need to do surgery, that's what the other surgeons are for. I'll just manage them.

You, my friend, would have made things worse.

The fleas that transmitted the pathogen almost never bite humans. The only reason they began, was because the rats started to die off, and and the fleas were hungry enough to jump to humans.

not necessarily, fleas jump off other animals all the time and get picked up by other passing beings they come across.

When the dieases hit people started killing cats especially the black ones (because they are an omen and someone still do today) this caused the rat population to rise a lot.

doubtful, fleas leave their host for various reasons, like over population or they get knocked off, the host dies etc.

I have gotten bitten by fleas, that's not even suppose to bite humans, but left their host and got on me when I unknowing walked past them.

when it comes to history, you should always read more then one book about a subject.

Because there can be multiple theories, facts etc. that can tell history one way and sometimes another.

Well you can't say that for certain as in this scenario Venice and cities like her would be much cleaner as along with the teaching about general cleanliness I outlined there would naturally be actions put in place to make the town/city much cleaner.
The thought was to never introduce those rats, and thereby the fleas, to where humans are. If the rats don't thrive in the cities, but in the countryside, the fleas thrive in the countryside as well.
If the rat population dies down and the areas where people are kept clean enough for fleas to not survive then surely the fleas would die off much sooner, if they manage to become a problem at all.

Plus if I am getting every ship to be cleaned out I can also assume that the conditions where fleas could thrive with high soaps and alcohol based cleaning (such as I outlined earlier) the fleas may die off all the sooner.

TheodoricFriede wrote:No offense TTTX, but I'm going to go with the historians on this one.

Well there was the Plague of Justinian, but that happened in the 500's, nowhere near the 1400's.
And even then that affected the Sassanid and Byzantine empires. Not Europe.

TheodoricFriede wrote:I could kill you right now with my bare hands, and feel nothing.

Well there is no need for that animosity purely for the mention of reading other accounts.
Especially when the account you're quoting/paraphrasing from you can not seem to remember at the time. That's not to mention that all this is a thought experiment, I wonder how steamed you'd eb if we asked you to read two books on another issue...

Well it was a strain of bubonic plague, not necessarily the same strain responsible, but similar enough.
What I don't get is why you're taking accounts 900 years older than the time period we're being sent to though in this thought experiment.
Especially when according tot he wikipedia article the disease itself drove rats to die out causing the fleas themselves to die out.
The only reason why it returned to Europe in small cases after 1353 was due to more rats from Asia.
But even taking that with a grain of salt it shows may reasons for the same outcome, that you get from looking at more than one report.

My mother's offering to not only buy a plane ticket for me to be at her marriage ceremony, she's also willing to get me a taxi to and from the airport, plus lodging.

Apparently me politely declining to buy my own ticket or take the 13 hour train rides was interpreted as a negotiation tactic. Which worked, I suppose. So I'll get to see the South for the first time in shy of 4 years. Hmph.

I read an article about it when it was first announced, and the story itself is part of the mystery. All we know is that this takes over 20 years after the end of the original story, and that we now have Swarm instead of Locust, who themselves already strongly resemble Locust. Honestly, Gears' story is not its strong suit, but the games themselves are a delight. And unlike some other long-running franchises, each entry does try to do some sort of shake-up to avoid being formulaic.

Also, I met the cast and director at Comic-Con.

I watch Game Grumps from time to time (I don't watch everything of theirs, sue me) and I found it difficult to place that reference. I mean it's no "God dammit Ross!" or "My Caruba!"

Next time add the quotations and who you're referencing, just in case. As to someone who has not seen the material you're referencing that quote is extremely malicious for no reason and just makes you look like a dick when you don't intend it to.

Shit, that even happened in the Game Grumps crew, when Arin jokingly said "Well, that's your problem. Fuck you." to Barry when he asked about an editing problem in a reference to a really old YouTube video, which Barry took as really mean-spirited, because he hadn't seen it.

I know or at least most do not play Forza here but damn... I mean whatever engine Turn10 studios uses it looks amazing. I heard stuff that just for the skybox the dev's stayed a year in Australia. I mean by far I think this is one of the best looking games of this year. I have played the demo and just for the first 30 mins of the game you can tell how amazing it is. This video is on the xbox one...just imagine how the PC version will look when it comes out.

The Pokemon Company has basically confirmed that the Nintendo NX is a hybrid Handheld/Home console. While this isn't really a surprise at this point, (the rumors have been circulating for a while) this is the most concrete evidence for it there has ever been.

While I still have some concerned about overall system power, I have been hoping for a hybrid Nintendo Console since before the WiiU ever came out, so I'm kind of thrilled to finally get it.

Its also a smart marketing move, because if they do need to make another new home system, they can just chalk it up to the NX being their new handheld (that replaced the 3ds) and the new system being their more powerful home platform.

This is how I play Halo 5 multiplayer. I log into the game and pick an arena. The system picks a map and spawns me in. Then I hit the 'Hand my ass to me' button for about 30 mins until I log out. So if you were in Halo 5 multiplayer this morning at 4am PST and beat some player senseless, it was a pleasure to play with you.

Family functions, ugh. Just make a little adventure of it. Put a smile on your mom's face by showing up and playing the part then bolt out of there and go someplace fun that will put a smile on your face.

"What exactly is a ghost heart? Take a pig heart, soak it in an ingredient commonly found in shampoo and wash away the cells until you’re left with a protein scaffold that is to a heart what two-by-four framing is to a house. Then inject that ghost heart, as it’s called, with hundreds of millions of blood or bone-marrow stem cells from a person who needs a heart transplant, place it in a bioreactor - a box with artificial lungs and tubes that pump oxygen and blood into it - and wait as the ghost heart begins to mature into a new, beating human heart. Doris Taylor, director of regenerative medicine research at the Texas Heart Institute at St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital in Houston, has been working on this– first using rat hearts, then pig hearts and human hearts - for years. The process is called decellularization and it is a tissue engineering technique designed to strip out the cells from a donor organ, leaving nothing but connective tissue that used to hold the cells in place. This scaffold of connective tissue - called a “ghost organ” for its pale and almost translucent appearance - can then be reseeded with a patient’s own cells, with the goal of regenerating an organ that can be transplanted into the patient without fear of tissue rejection. This ghost heart is ready to be injected with a transplant recipient’s stem cells so a new heart - one that won’t be rejected - can be grown."
