Nice Metroid cover.

GI was at peak popularity in my neck of the woods around my middle school and high school years. I still remember my best friend showing me his issue with the first screenshots of Starcraft Ghost*. Man, that was a long time ago.

*Still a shame that never got off the ground.

Bought Mankind Divided and wow, this game runs like ass. If I can get a solid FPS in Doom with most settings set to their highest, one would think that I'd have no problem running this game. Nope. Inconsistent as all hell with frame drops around every corner and couldn't even hit 60 FPS. Made me refund it too. Glad I didn't pay full price for that one.

I like to think that someday, in the future, most all drugs will be legal to buy over the counter, or perhaps with a quick doctor visit to nail down specifics/explain risks and dosage and such.

And then, while looking up this odd substance that's a pharmaceutical in Russia but is an unregulated "health supplement" in the west, I see people talking about on their first go, they took a standard dose, waited 30 minutes, chugged 5 beers, then doubled their dose. Those people, those shining stars, are why we cannot have more legal drugs yet.

Yeah, it's always that one idiot. That's why we have so many "no shit, Sherlock" labels.

"Don't walk near a fallen power line." "Don't toss batteries into an open flame." Or the more topical and recent "Don't eat laundry detergents".

Makes you think, if we round off every edge to keep people alive and well who otherwise wouldn't be, where does it lead?

Regardless. "I'm going to try a new drug that isn't supposed to mix with booze, by mixing it with booze, then doubling my dose" is some Darwin awards shit.

"Breaking news today – a brand new battle box is on the way. We’ve heard a lot over the past year about the conflict between the Space Marines and their traitorous cousins, but in this set, we turn our gaze to another ancient evil rising throughout the galaxy. In Forgebane, two venerable empires clash for supremacy on a forge world that was revealed to be a tomb world following the opening of the Cicatrix Maledictum. In the boxed set, you’ll find two armies, along with rules for playing them and a new chapter in the lore of Warhammer 40,000, as the Adeptus Mechanicus discover the secrets of blackstone – a mysterious material with the potential to neutralise the powers of Chaos or even amplify it to a horrific degree. Conflicts such as these are rising across the galaxy, as more forge worlds are found to harbour ancient and terrible secrets (that’ll serve them right for building all their facilities on unusually ore-rich planets mysteriously devoid of all life…)."

"One of the most exciting things about collecting the youngest race in Warhammer 40,000 is their developing narrative, and the new Codex: T’au Empire is designed to reflect how this nascent stellar power has expanded and diversified. To demonstrate properly just how much bigger the T’au Empire has become, six Sept Tenets allow you to dedicate your Detachments to one of the most populous and influential of the T’au settlements. You can also pick a sept from the background – or even make one up yourself – and pick the Sept Tenet you think best reflects your strategy and fighting style."

So painting the baseboard in a house that's had pets for 30+ years and apparently never vacuumed is an interesting experience. Namely in how much hair and fur my brush could pick up on every stroke, and how vile the carpeting I was laying flat on must be. Borderline germaphobia has never looked so good.

This is one of the reasons I wanted a house without carpet when we were house hunting. Carpet is inherently disgusting unless you are a complete neat freak like my grandmother who vacuumed once a week, never allowed food outside the kitchen & dining room, and had everything shampooed multiple times a year. I am not a neat freak. I am a slob. I would turn carpet into a biohazard inside of a month.

It doesn't, but an interesting factoid that gets left out of the narrative a lot when talking about 1930s Prohibition is that the goal wasn't just prudishness, but to reduce the extremely high rates of alcoholism, spousal and child abuse, and homelessness that was rampant in the country at the time. In the 19th century, the US was one of the hardest drinking places on Earth. And though Prohibition caused all kinds of problems and obviously failed to keep people from drinking, it *did* actually reduce the overall rate at which Americans drank and reduced the crime associated with drunkenness, and it never got so high again even after Prohibition was lifted.

That's not a defense of Prohibition or argument to put it in place now, but more that it wasn't an abject failure when you consider what some of its contemporary goals were.

What really sucks about carpet is that in the winter, you're dealing with not just snow, but road salt, sand, and tracking that shit everywhere. Even kicking off all the snow leaves moisture on your boots.

Unfortunately, carpet is almost a requirement up here due to the extreme cold we face for more than half the year. Nothing sucks worse than stepping on a floor that is just...frozen.

My tutor is having me write music to one of these two scenes from Jurassic Park. He showed me this video without the music and honestly, it's quite daunting. I'll do my best, but the original is so iconic it's hard not to emulate it. Anyway, I'm excited about it and wanted to share that with you.

As a huuuuuge Jurassic Park fan, do you think the movie is a fantasy or a work of science fiction? I'm going to have that debate with my tutor on Saturday.

Shortly said, because I lose my trail of thought rather easily, I'd say that it's a bit of both. Fantasy in the sense that it's man trying to create a paradise that can pretty much only exist in fiction and science fiction because it has cloned/genetically engineered dinosaurs.

Most of Chricton stuff is "science fantasy", he did his homeworks well enough that it could always look like it was based on grounded science, but then also always exaggerated or straight up made up stuff. In the case of the JP novels, he had poisonous dinosaurs, t-rex swimming as well as crocodiles, chamaleontic dinosaurs and other weird stuff. And the movies didn't do much better or much worse. The creatures still look amazing (most of the time) but they look very little like the real dinosaurs did, and the whole cloning from mosquitos has been proven not viable, several times even.

For me, it's not fantasy unless it has magic in it. And for magic to be magic it has to be overtly supernatural. Magic in fantasy is not "science we don't understand yet." It is magic and always retains an inherent element of inscrutability because it is at least partially otherworldly. The mysteriousness of magic is a feature, not a challenging technical problem to be overcome. So the breakdown is something like: sci-fi is about experimentation, exploration, and reason. Fantasy is about faith and mystery. http://brainstorm-services.com/wcu-2004 ... olkien.pdf

So sci-fi, just not the hardest of hard sci-fi. Nobody said the science in science fiction has to be based on *good* science.

Well, "Science-fantasy" sounds better than "Made up science", so that's why I used that term. I do get where you're coming from.

Raga wrote:For me... otherworldly...

That there is where I start calling something fantasy, when there's another world to it. LOTR is in it's own world with it's own rules. Harry Potter may take place in our world, but they have their own separate world with their own rules. Same with Narnia and such. Star Wars too, Fantasy. Same with Journey to the center of the Earth when humans discovered a separate world inside of our own.

When it comes to JP I don't have so much a sense of that 'otherworldly' presence, although it could be argued that the dinosaurs's instinct bring their own world into ours I feel that they are animals from our own world that we still play by the same rules to. Same could be applied to if humans were cloned millions of years after our extinction and took over the small amusement park that cloned us.

I guess a sci-fi comparison could be the dinosaurs from JP are the same thing as warp drive in Star Trek. Some scientific feat humans accomplished.

Apologies for incoming rant:

I should probably switch career paths or jobs because I have begun to actively hate how stupid most people are about basic knowledge and a huge part of my job involves helping stupid people. It's not even irritation anymore. I have started to actually *hate* these people.

Like how is it humanly possible to be so breathtakingly stupid that you don't know how to do things like: drag a box around something, open up a flash drive, right click on something, double click on something?

And moreover, to be so fundamentally stupid that even when I fucking *show* you something a two year old could pick up in 30 seconds, you still don't get it and I have to show you over and over and fucking over. To be so stupid that you don't even know how to learn how to stop being stupid. To be so stupid that learning itself is impossible because your brain just shuts down whenever somebody tries to teach you something.

Some thin part of myself can still accept that grotesque ignorance is excusable in some measure because your school was crap or your parents sucked or you don't speak English well or whatever. But when I try to teach you and all I get is you staring at me with the dull, lazy, glazed eyes of an ox, I really do start to hate you.[/rant]

(Just met person who could not understand how to right click on a picture to open it so they could print. And who I had to show like 37 times and they still didn't get it).

I work in the online ordering department of a grocery store. At least once a week I have to teach grandma how to use the internet while tying up our single phone line for a half hour. If it's not that, it's someone who called to complain that they didn't get something and doesn't understand simple concepts like if it's not in your delivery, the store itself didn't have whatever they wanted.

Then there was that time I made the tragic mistake of substituting Bounty full-size paper towels for the Bounty select-a-size paper towels we were out of. Then she called and vented for fifteen solid minutes about her strong opinions on paper towels, because full sized sheets are too big to be useful.

At some point, I'd like to have to deal with customer problems that aren't so damned inane.

Heh, basically every client we have is, no joke, either someone who married into money, inherited money, or has a good white collar job, often mixed with the first two as well. Thankfully, they're nearly universally polite and kind, probably because we're inside their homes and paint is messy, but it still riles up the old class warfare sense a bit when I'm hugging a toilet to paint behind it and thinking about how so-and-so got 10 million in a divorce. So in a way, I'm lucky for that.

Edit: I try that, but it's hard when someone doesn't care as much. Then again my place had cheap cheap carpet installed.

For me, fantasy has things like magic, mystical beasts, the supernatural, demigods, and such. To that end, I'd consider Jurassic Park to be science fiction, since genetic engineering and cloning are real sciences, even if its exaggerated in the film for the sake of the story. And dinosaurs are real, even if the ones in the JP series are exaggerated/no longer accurate to current knowledge. We don't see the raptors shape-shifting, the T-Rex breathing fire like a dragon, or Dr. Malcolm revealing he's a level 37 Chaos Warlock and saves the day casting spells.

Star Wars would be science fantasy, Star Trek would be science fiction. I'd consider JP to be more like Trek than Wars.

I'll do my best, but the original is so iconic it's hard not to emulate it. Anyway, I'm excited about it and wanted to share that with you.

That is a challenge. I look forward to hearing what your skill and imagination can conjure up.

That's why I'm debating the issue. I'm scoring it like a fantasy and I'd do it differently if I'd been ask to do it like a sci-fi.
