Call me crazy, but from all the live action Disney movies, Dumbo is probably the one that I actually want to see the most. Dumbo is one the most craziest of Disney animations, which makes it interesting to see how they translate that craziness on the big screen. But Dumbo is also the one with most potential for different stories.
Jungle Book, Lion King, Aladin, Cinderella, Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, all them have well known and rather strict story that doesn't really leave much of room for interpretation. You have to tell the same story with same scenes as it was in animation and if you try something new or different, people might not like it. That basically mean, Disney is just purely cashing with these well known Disney animations with just live action reskin. However, Dumbo is a film were they can actually tell something new and have actual proper unique story, because they can't directly translate the animation to a big screen like with everything else.
That and knowing Tim Burton directing style, some of Dumbo animations could be rather epic on big screen, like the whole pink elephants drunk scene. That scene was one of my chilhoods "what the hell I'm seeing and why it's both weirdly scary, yet funny at the same time" moments.

Re: Films and TV (Untagged spoilers)
What saddened me the most was to see Tim Burton at the helm.
I admire most of his 90's work. He still did good things in the 00's, like Big Fish, Sweeney Todd (minus the insufferable young couple) or Corpse Bride. But nowadays, he just seems to care about the check Disney will write him for making yet another forgettable yet profitable live adaptation.
Worse than being bad, he looks boring and unambitious now. He looks like he's become part of the plastic neighborhood that hates Edward Scissorhands.
And while I agree with Frozenshadow that Dumbo is a bit "out there" among Disney classics...Burton managed to make Alice in Wonderland forgettable. So I don't have any hopes here.

Frankenweenie was actually pretty good, but that's his only semi recent thing I can think of that is good.

"Outrageous: AQUAMAN has splashed to the top of the global box office making it DC Films #1 most successful movie to date!"
"By land, by sea...he’s swimming in it. Overseas, AQUAMAN tallied up $12M on Friday, $649M total—now the highest grossing DC flick of all time internationally, passing DARK KNIGHT RISES. Worldwide dominion: $887M."
"Warner Bros.’ Aquaman has reporters diving into the bottom of the barrel for ocean puns as it remains at the top of the box office for the third straight week. (How…shell-fish of it?) In a slow post-New Year’s weekend release-wise, director James Wan‘s DC Comics flick starring Jason Momoa enjoyed a $9.3 million Friday night, on track for $25 million in its third weekend in theaters. Yes, the under-the-sea dudebro in orange and green is officially DC’s most profitable movie since The Dark Knight. Aquaman‘s domestic total now stands at $238 million, officially surpassing the total statewide haul of Justice League, which topped out at $229 million. Of course, it’s been nothing but smooth sailing for the film worldwide as well. Aquaman has speared about $649 million overseas for a worldwide total of $887 million, beating out the likes of Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice ($873.6 million) Wonder Woman ($821.8 million), Suicide Squad ($746.8 million), Justice League ($657.9 million), and Man of Steel ($668 million)."
"Aquaman is now officially the highest-grossing DCEU movie at the global box office. Previously topped by Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, the record-breaking fish-out-of-water superhero film is now king of the box office in the DC family. Prior to Aquaman's release, audiences were mostly on the fence about whether or not it could succeed - both critically and financially. However, following early praise for the film, Aquaman ultimately took fans by surprise, not only becoming the second-highest-rated film in the DCEU (it earned a fresh 64 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes, while Wonder Woman still holds the number one spot with a 93 percent rating), but giving fans hope about the entire future of the DCEU in general. Now, Aquaman's success speaks for itself now that it's the highest-grossing DCEU movie at the global box office. After a steady climb in the box office, Aquaman recently passed Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice at the international box office, earning a current worldwide gross of $887,620,880, according to Box Office Mojo, compared to Batman v Superman's $873,634,919 worldwide gross. Even though it still has a ways to go at the US box office (it's still below Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Wonder Woman, Suicide Squad, and Man of Steel), Aquaman is on track to potentially reach the billion dollar mark during its international run. Aquaman has been rising high at the box office steadily since its December 2018 release, recently beating films like Venom, Thor: Ragnarok, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Whether or not it can sustain this climb remains to be seen, though upcoming competing films don't appear to serve as much of a threat. That is, until films like Glass and The Kid Who Would Be King hit theaters on January 18 and 25, respectively - though, even then, there's no guarantee they'll get in Aquaman's way. Underdog stories are always worth celebrating, and considering the initial missteps that Warner Bros. and the DCEU ran into, it's encouraging to see a character like Aquaman - who is hardly as familiar to mainstream audiences as characters like Batman and Superman - take the lead. And, seeing as the DCEU desperately needed a critical and financial pick-me-up, the future looks bright for its upcoming slate with films like Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) and Shazam!, which also happen to feature DC characters who aren't exactly household names for casual viewers."

Re: Films and TV (Untagged spoilers)
Aquaman is the most profitable DC character and someone that fans seems to like the most. What a weird world we live in right now.
That said, I think part of success is because DCEU fans desperately wanted a good and enjoyable movie. Not saying Aquaman ain't all of that, but the movie has some problems, even worse than the problem with Wonder Woman and that movie got rather huge backlash after the hype was over. I just fear that Aquaman will have it worse.
Still, Aquaman is right now swimming in ocean, were water is money.

Re: Films and TV (Untagged spoilers)
Without having looked too much into it, I haven't really seen a huge backlash against Wonder Woman. There was the expected backlash from Marvel fans who were already preparing to celebrate the collapse of the DCEU but got a critically acclaimed and financially successful movie instead. And those fans can be very vocal (now to be honest, DC has the same kind of fans, but there hasn't been a hugely controversial MCU movie yet, so they haven't been as vocal - but if one fails to meet expectations they'll have a field day).
So I don't think Aquaman will suffer either. It will never be seen as the definitive superhero movie, but it will be one most people will probably remember fondly, or, possibly, will forget about (because that's what happens with many MCU movies - if there weren't recurring crossovers and cameos, some movies would have completely faded out of minds right now).
However, it seems that all other "fantasy" movies (in the broader sense of the term), those that don't feature superheroes, are bombing, or at least aren't extremely successful. Mary Poppins or Bumblebee aren't gonna break any records soon, and Nutcracker the month before was a flop. While this is probably related to the movie's actual quality (although I have only heard good things about Bumblebee), I fear it's not good for diversity of entertainment in the future.

Re: Films and TV (Untagged spoilers)
I feel that Aquaman was what Thor or Black Panther should have been. Anyway, all I wanted out of an Aquaman movie was three things; him commanding sharks to eat people, a deep sea scene, and a giant sea monster. The movie delivered all of that and more. It also featured my favorite Sigur Rós track, and that has earned it infinite good will from me.

Yeah that's the same kind of idiots that argue over consoles or wheter Star Wars or Star Trek is better. There's always some loud assholes of that kind in all fanbases.
Personally Batman V Superman killed whatever interest I might have had in the current iteraction of DC movies. And then I was also invited to see Justice League...
But, as I always said, what pissed me off was that the DC heroes could have a cool cinematic saga as good or better than Marvel's. It was the squandered potential that angered me more than the movies themselves. So I'm actually positively delighted that Aquaman, the guy who's been a freaking meme since before memes were a thing, is the one that has just proven you don't need to rely solely on Batman or Superman to make a good DC movie.
And the only backlash to Wonder Woman I've seen, was similar to the one I've see for stuff like Black Panther, where most people agree the movie is good, or at the very least a fun ride, but are annoyed at the critics treating it like it's the Second Coming because of the usual ulterior motives.

Oh, Wonder Woman movie had it's fair share of backlashes, before and after the release of the film. There were ones from Gal Gadot doing the part related to Wonder Woman armpit calapalique?! to all female screening issues, not mention how WW was treated in Justice League. But I'm not talking about that kind of backlash. What I mean is the kind of backlash movie gets after the people watching it take off their hype glasses. When this happens, people start to see problems, sometimes even serious problems with their favourite movies. At times this just leads to realization that nothing is perfect, but at times this kind of backlash makes one question why something actually was seen as good in the first place. For example Avatar had faced this issue, same as Avengers, Maleficiant, Forrest Gump, Saving Private Ryan, Suicide Squad (much faster than any of these others) rather huge deal of films that had ever won oscars to name a few. Or the incoming ones like Black Panther and possibly Infinity war, depending on how Avengers: End Game goes.
Of course the opposite is possible too as same films were originally disliked, but then people have come to like them after "uplash". For example Empire Strike back, The Thing, Man of Steel, Revenge of the Sith, The Room.
But the most topical issue with Wonder Woman and Aquaman are obvious flaws in the films, which take longer time for some to see. Wonder Woman had it's whole 3rd act, especially the end fight, villain as a whole (for some), Gal Gadots role as whole (again, for some), humor in the film, how boring most of the movie is. As for Aquaman, its overly done and bad at times CGI, movie is bloated and all over the place with plot, clishes, clishes everywhere, miserable dialogue at times, too much action (yeah, I have heard this even from top critics) just to name a few. With both cases, many didn't care about these as they desperately wanted a good DC movie, so people were ready to over look them or got caught up in the hype train. That said, it's more than likely that Aquaman will just be forgotten as "watchable" superhero movies in the future.
As for Fantasy, and I would add sci-fi in general, movies not doing so good....well you definitely are right on that. Many recent years fantasy and sci-fi movies had failed to meet expectations. Nutcracker is most obvious example of this and recent Mortal Engines is probably another one. Though what comes to Mary Poppins and Bumblebee, no one really wanted another Mary Poppins film and it's not exactly worldwide phenomean either. As for Bumblebee, it's movies about secondary character, it has to fight against "Michael Bay Transformers" stigma, it has fight against "Last Knight to broke the camels back" effect the last Bay movie did to whole Transforms franchise and of course Transformers fatigue born from multiple bad movies one after the another.
That said, I don't think diversity will be a problem here. Sure, animations, Superhero films, horror and live action remakes seems to be most popular right now, but if you look at the all the film released in last few years, you can see that the setting is rather wide and diverse and many genres are doing just fine. Only genres not doing so well at the moment are fantasy and sci-fi, but these genres were juggernauts not so long ago and they'll be back again after this realism and "down to earth" phase will pass.

That said, it's more than likely that Aquaman will just be forgotten as "watchable" superhero movies in the future.
Again, the movie had its critics since day one. It didn't change over time. And even those who enjoyed the movie and still do tend to say that the third act is weaker than the rest of the movie - but that is far from enough to suddenly decide that it is a bad movie.
You mention a whole lot of movies as if there is an actual negative or even average consensus on their quality, but Avengers, Saving Private Ryan or Avatar as still widely seen as very good movies. It's just that, like Wonder Woman, some people seem to have been, for various reasons, offended by their success and have started actual crusades to try and demolish their reputation. It's up to you how relevant you consider those people. And I don't mean that all those movies are perfect, or equally as good. Also, Suicide Squad was seen as a guilty pleasure at best from day one, it was never considered good, ever. It was successful financially, not critically.
It's not actual backlash, it's having very vocal haters, which often happens when politics or rivalries are mixed with fandoms. Considering its current reception, if you see anti-Aquaman backlash in the future, in all iikelihood, it will come from people who can't suffer for a DC movie or a superhero movie to be successful, and are just waiting for the release hype to die down so that their ramblings are heard by more.
So when some "backlash" as you mention appears later on, for me, it has nothing to do with the movie's actual quality. It comes from people whose criticism of the movie has nothing to do with its actual quality - people who don't like a movie say so when it's released, they don't keep beating the same dead horse for months or years. You also have those who can't stand that this movie was more successful than another one they enjoyed more. A lot of people are being extremely critical of Avatar just because it became the most successful movie ever. A lot of DC fanboys couldn't stand seeing Avengers beat the Dark Knight. A lot of people decided afterwards that a feminist fantasy like Wonder Woman was not sufferable - even though, if memory serves, the "feminism" in WW basically boils down to pointing out that society in the early XXth century was super sexist, which is not exactly an extremist point of view to have.
Because when the reputation of an "initially good" movie actually goes down, it's simple: it disappears, and it is barely mentioned anymore. On the other hand, if someone feels the need to remind everyone every month that Wonder Woman/Avengers/Avatar is really bad and that their legacy should be spat upon and that their success is unfair, it's for other causes than "actual criticism".
The counter-examples you mentioned...well, you have one that has always been and still is seen as one of the greatest movies ever made (Empire Strikes Back), so it's not vindication, you have a cult classic (The Thing), which wasn't panned at release but simply wasn't as successful as it turned out to be a few decades later (like The Big Lebowski), you have two movies which had mixed-to-positive reviews at release, but which are mostly looked upon fondly today because their most vocal critics have found another one to attack (MOS, with BVS or Justice League, and RotS, with Ep VIII or Solo), and you have a movie everyone still considers absolutely, utterly terrible, but in a funny way (The Room, see: the Rocky Horror Picture Show).

I just watched most of the Castlevania show on Netflix and it's surprisingly good. It's literally the only film adaptation of a video game thing I've ever seen that was worth a damn.

I'm an über hardcore Castlevania fan, and while they changed and omitted some things --Death and Grant are missing, Hector doesn't abandon Dracula because he's against the genociding of humanity, Sypha wasn't a "Speaker", for some examples-- I thought it was a well done adaptation and incorporated a surprising amount of lore straight from the games. I enjoyed the hell out of it, and look forward to seeing where they go with season 3. These 2 seasons were a loose adaption of Castlevania 3: Dracula's Curse, and the next game in the series chronologically is Curse of Darkness, which makes the most sense for the series if they're not doing a time skip and just moving to Simon or Richter Belmont's time or something. Curse of Darkness heavily features Hector and Issac, and considering where those two are left off at the end of season 2, it makes sense to pick up with them from there.

The end credit scene of the fist movie does tease Cletus Casady (sadly played by Woodie Herrolson with a shitty ginger wig), so I'd imagine that yes, the sequel is gonna be Venom v Carnage.
Personally I'd have tried to figure things out with Marvel, since the first movie made a lot of money and they changed half of it to make it more MCU-like, and get a sequel that's Venom v Spiderman, and then maybe to a Maximum Carnage thing for a third, last movie. But I'm not an Hollywood producer... so I'm probably talking too much sense lol

I know absolutely nothing about Castlevania so I had the advantage of being able to come at it pretty much free of expectations. I can't quite put my finger on what's so compelling about it because the premise is insanely simple when you come down to it. It's just well executed - good art, cool action, sinister but understandable villains, likable but simple main characters, just enough humor to avoid being broody teen fair. The blood and guts are so extreme and ubiquitous as to border on the distracting side, but that could be an homage to the game I suppose.

News from Paramount, apparently the Star Trek Kelvin timeline is dead. The supposed director of the fourth movie has left and there's no plans to look for a replacement and the movie. It's unfortunate, I actually did not hate those movies... they were just big dumb action films, I've never took them too seriously, but they were entertaining for what they were.
But I get why the fanbase was made at what had been done to the Star Trek by those movies, so to speak, so I don't blame anyone for being glad thei're done.
Also, I get the feeling Star Trek Discovery will be next. No way that thing gets renewed for a third season, now that Netflix is not paying most of the bills.

Drop Star Trek Discovery, pick up The Orville instead.
Even as a Seth McFarlane led project it's still way closer to Star Trek as it's known and loved.

Re: Films and TV (Untagged spoilers)
So, now that we finally got Bumblebee here and hearing positive feedback from many sources, I decided to see it. Have to say I'm happy that I did. Finally a proper Transformers movie that actually felt like one. Lots of it reminded me of the first time I saw Tranformers cartoon, when I was child. But most of all, this movie, if they keep it this way, washed away lots of "Bayformers shit".
Finally a movie, where military ain't the main thing and Autbots/Decepticons distant secondary focus. A movie, where there is proper friendship between human character and Autobot, just like in first animation I saw. And most importantly, finally a Tranformers movie, where humans didn't beat the shit out of either Autobots or Decepticons. You can't imagine how damn angry I was to see humans killing either of them left and right on Bayformers. But Bumblebee finally showed how it really should be. If Autobots or Decepticons ever gets serious, humans can't do shit. Just like it should be.
It's just too bad that movie ain't doing all that good in box office. I guess too many got burned by Bayformers crap.
It's doing rather well in China, and it costed a lot less to make than any of the Bay movies. It's not gonna break any record, but it shouldn't be a flop either in the end.

Let's hope so. Year ago this time, I didn't think I could be interested to see future Transformers movies. Heh, it's even possible that this Bumblebee could be start of this large universe that Hasbro had planned to do. At very least Bumblebee did much better job than recent Mummy and Dark universe attempt.
