Otherwise, yeah, everyone's basically on point here. First meetings are awkward for everyone, but most people don't overthink it like we do, and they do it often enough to have the "script" down rote. Introductions, your job, or your hobbies, or something notable that happened, and then simple small talk. It's tedious, but it's how you make friends unless you start with a group of people already sharing some common interests. Cough cough.

My advice, may not be the best but works for me, is that I project the person I want to be, which in this case is a person who is confident. I normally dislike talking to new people as I am never sure how to connect initially with people I have never met or talked to before. Add to the mix that I am fairly shy and a bit of an introvert.

My introductory conversations normally go like. "Hey man, fun [insert social occasion or whatever]" , I then wait for the reply and then go "My name is x , what is your name and what brings you here?" You can then add questions about where they work or how they got know someone, or any sort of popular current stuff like movies or tv shows or what not. The key thing is to converse long enough to find some common ground. If they do not seem to engage then move on to someone else or to another group conversation.

The thing is you will need to put yourself out there and sort of "force" yourself to engage in those conversations until you get comfortable in them, it is about practice and, like others said, listening to the other person to see what kind of common ground/interests you can find. Eventually you will rely less and less in forced confidence projection as your natural charisma and confidence will take over. At least this is how it worked out for me, not saying I love talking to new people but I manage better than a couple of years ago.

See, it was the opposite for me. I used to be rather natural at talking to people, but then something happened and now I can only think like myself when I'm not in a social situation, because the second I'm in one, I think I get something close to performance anxiety, but without all the physical symptoms. It's like my head becomes completely empty and stringing together thoughts becomes close to impossible, because I guess that a part of me really wants to get the best out of every sentence and that puts pressure on me and makes me think about everything I say instead of just saying it, which makes me hesitate about everything I say at the same time and makes me try to keep it short instead of talking about things in a natural way, about how I truly feel. I think it's because a part of my brain is trying to turn every sentence into a punchline.

It's something I really want to get over, but I'm not sure how. Just having social interactions don't help either. I really wish I could become more spontaneous and just not care about every single word I say. It's like I think I'm being judged based on everything I say and I'm trying to upstage myself because of it.

It's like that fight or flight scenario and my brain automatically chooses flight and I can't make it fight to save my life, because I don't think I know how to be myself around people anymore. I've tried breathing techniques, I've tried thinking about it in different ways, nothing helps.

I was exactly the same, hated talking to people and always over thought all my comments. I mean I seriously used to run a few scenarios in my head to see how a conversation would play out. What helped me was joining a board game meetup and then baby step conversations. Not only do you not need to always talk, but there will be people there who are as awkward as you. Eventually I managed to strike conversations around, nothing major but small comments on games and things.

If anyone's curious, I made a Python script that has the same function as the computer from The Nine Billion Names Of God by Arthur C. Clarke. It's currently running on my computer with the English alphabet. It's... taking a bit. I think the thing slowing me down the most is printing out the results so I can see if the program is still working, since it got to AAAB***** in about a minute, but getting from there to AAABM*** has taken about a half hour.

They're pretty classic Shaggy God Stories right up there with two people (a man and a woman) crash landing on a savage planet incidentally being named Adam and Eve, hence implying that this is Earth and this is how the Bible really started. They're pretty classic examples of the genre.
