You should buy 1 solely for the Mortal Empire's grand campaign map, which includes the TW1 races. And any faction packs that catch your fancy for it, they carry over. Same for TW3, into the eventual TW3.

Yes the idea is that by the time 3 comes out you get this massive game with all the races and factions from all of the old Warhammer Fantasy series.Assuming you bought all 3 games and relative DLCs, so it IS a major money investment. Thank goodness for Steam sales.

Also, Total War 40k fucking when?! Imagine an Horus Heresy campaign, it would be sooo cool.

I have never played TW, but apparently each game only has a limite nimbée of factions that's it ? Or van you play anything you like through DLC? Or is therebsome ultimate edition in the works?

I might give it a try someday but if I can't play a faction I enjoy I'll just be frustrated.

@Maz: Yeah, albeit in the updated, current form. None of the mini-campaigns come, but they weren't great anyway. But every faction/lord/unit pack does carry over into Mortal Empires, and then into TW3. By the end of TW3, we should have damn near everything notable from the Old World.

@Alien: I'd say that the TW engine wouldn't work for 40k, but fuck it. Dawn of War is dead, CA did amazing with Alien, so maybe they could do 40k justice with a major engine overhaul.

@Sine: Yeah, the scale of the project is every major faction, unit, region, and named characters from the Old World. So they divided it into 3 games. Games come with some factions baseline, then there's free DLC. Factions are paid (on sale now), along with packs that include new units and named characters. By the the time the next game is out and finished, there'll probably be an ultimate edition, but that's years away.

Finished the most recent Horus Heresy siege of Terra novel; a little disappointing. There was so much filler and set-up for the next one. There were some cool stuff, but the plot was really dragging its feet.

Perturabo breaches Dorn's outer defenses not by trying to outsmart him, but just using dumb brute force in the most illogical place one could pick. 7 years of planning and preparing, and Dorn didn't anticipate his brother throwing all strategic and tactical notions out the window to blindside him.

Khârn is so juiced up on Khorne juice that he manages to defeat Sigismund, the greatest swordsman among all the Space Marines, something he's never done before. But the moment he charges Dorn, the Primarch swats him away like a fly.

Horus has been engaged in a mind battle with the Emperor for two books now, chipping away at his anti-Chaos shield, but the progress was slower than what he wanted (either because Horus wants to save his strength for their big showdown or the Emperor was stronger than anticipated) so Magnus joins in and Emp's psychic barrier instantly goes down, and now Warp rifts are opening up all over Terra and nigh-infinite hordes of daemons are now murdering the populace at will. Only the Inner Palace retains the Emperor's protection.

There's a subplot of a bunch of soldiers from all over the world marching to join the fighting at the palace, but when they get there, SURPRISE, they are aligned with Horus, not the Emperor, as there's still a lot of humans on Terra that never like Emps taking over and ruling as a dictator.

The book goes into the double-edged sword that is faith in this setting; when used properly its an amazing anti-Chaos tool, can produce literal miracles even. But the Chaos Gods are experts at subverting it for their own ends, so one has to always be cautious and wary. Worship of the Emperor as a deity among the civilians and Imperial Guard is way more wide-spread than the Loyalists ever thought, but many of them are content to let it be, as not only do they not have the time/manpower/resources to stop it--reasoning that if they're lucky enough to survive this war then can address it later--but they're noticing the benefits its having, giving their warriors hope and solace and the will to keep fighting even in the face of sanity-shattering horrors. Malcador even justifies letting the worshippers be as "weapons research". More than anyone else, Malcador seems to realize that, win or lose, this is the end of an age and the birth of a new one, and the time of the Imperial Truth is over, which was always based on lies anyway and was a means to an end, an end that cannot be reached anymore so its kinda pointless to cling to it with the gates of hell literally opening up outside their door. And any weapon they can use against Chaos is worth considering in these dark times. (Though Malcador mentions that should they all live and the Emperor orders it after the war, he would personally hunt down and kill every single one.) A Nurgle daemon tries to corrupt some worshippers to undermine the Imperial defenses, but Keeler the First Saint manages to stop it, though the Custodes do put her back in her cell because they don't trust this stuff.

John Grammaticus arrives on Terra.

Though I hear the next novel is a doozy; huge retcons and plot revelations abound.

The Primarchs do in fact have a biological mommy, a female Perpetual named Erda who's DNA the Emperor used to make them, and it was she, not the Chaos Gods, who scattered the Primarchs. (That's a big deal, as multiple books throughout the Horus Heresy have covered this subject and it was always Chaos as the guilty party. Even the Birth of the Imperium Valdor book that came out a few months ago put the Scattering as a move by Chaos in their big chess game with the Emperor. Unless Chaos convinced Erda to do the act in their stead, I suppose.)

According to Erda, the Primarchs were originally going to be coded as having no personalities or will of their own; they would have been blindly loyal, obedient without question, indoctrinated into being slaves to the Emperor's will. Only by being scattered and living lives away from Emps allowed them to be their own individuals and have free will. (Truth or unreliable narrator? You decide.)

The Emperor tried to get all the other the Perpetuals to join him a long time ago, but most refused as they thought his ambitions were too crazy and controlling, and several of humanity's most terrible wars in history were caused by Emps the other Perpetuals trying to influence things to their designs or suffering huge setbacks.

One of the names the Emperor went by in times long ago was Neoth.

There is one Space Marine named Leetu, who's gene seed was made from DNA from the Emperor and Erda. He is totally unique, a prototype, with no brothers or legion of his own.

A virus designed to target all the transhumans made from the Emperor's work--all Primarchs, all Space Marines, all Custodes would be infected and killed--exists, designed by Basilio Fo, a genius biomechanics engineer over 5000 years old, imprisoned in the Emperor's dungeon. The Custodian named Amon orders him to write down all the details of this virus.

According to Fo, the Emperor isn't a god, but did want to become one, and to that end, him denying his godhood was a psychological trick to get people to worship him. His act of mortal humility just another tool of conquest and dominance. Emps wants total obedience, and no one to doubt or question him. The more he denied divinity, the more people would blindly follow him. (Truth or unreliable narrator? You decide.)

The myth of a lone mortal soldier defending the Emperor from Horus is a lie based on the true events of a solider defending a standard carrying the Emperor's image from a World Eater. A remembrancer exaggerates the story because he wants something inspiring, not knowing it will become legend after the Heresy and be taken as fact by so many.

Ollanius Pius arrives on Terra.

Dorn fights Daemon Fulgrim, who while can't be killed by him, quits the siege.

Dorn creates the first Inquisitors, who were repurposed remembrancers.

The Dark Angels reach the Sol System and join the defenders.

So apparently for the free DLC for Total War Warhammer you have to download them manually.....which only works sometimes apparently as when you hit "download" it launches the launcher and doesn't actually fucking download it every time, so it's pot fucking luck.

Fuck sake I've not even played it yet and I am already pissed off because of a shitty installation process, this shit is not worth it.
Tempted to get a refund.

You literally just click download for the FLC's. Then you let it open the launcher. Start the game once. Then exit out. Sometimes you need to restart steam.

Yeah, for each one. And the best thing is there is no guarantee that actually "works", so you gotta keep doing it until it does, I did one DLC four times before it activated.

That's like buying a car but you have to get in and out five times every time you want to change the radio. Yeah once you've done it for all the free DLC it's done but it's so fucking annoying that I already don't like my experience with the game before I've even played the damned thing.

I now don't WANT to play it because I am just reminded of the unnecessary bullshit I had to go through that literally every other game of this studio's has never had. Or any other game for that matter.

EDIT: Fuck it, one more go.
If it's still not activating on each attempt I am gonna just write it off and not bother with the free content.

I kinda didn't play much of Rome 2, and that was the last total war game I played at a decent clip at 79 hours.
I played 15 hours of Atilla, which is barely anything.

To compare I've played Hearts of Iron 4 for 264 hours.

So I am even wondering if I'd play this game all that much and if it's even worth all the aggro I'be been through.

TW: WH2 is, by far, the best Total War game ever made, just by dint that it features incredibly diverse unit rosters (every main faction (High Elves, Lizardmen, Skaven, etc) has completely different units and plays markedly different from each other faction). Then there's the inclusion of magic on the battlefields, the skill trees for your legendary lords / lords, the gigantic campaign map (you should play the Mortal Empires map, since it includes all the factions from TW: WH1. You need to own the first game, though) and the fantastic graphics and sound design.

For a first game, I'd recommend the High Elves, and specifically playing Tyrion (faction name: Eathaine), since the High Elves have the most "normal" roster for an experienced Total War player, except that they have as high tier units also phoenixes, giant eagles and dragons. Tyrion just is a very solid faction leader with good factionwide bonuses and a strong personal performance. Also, his starting position is pretty forgiving.

The other factions are more specialized each in their own way. Try out first how the game appeals to you with something which won't throw you into the deep end, i.e. High Elves/Tyrion.

I have almost 400 hours in the game and haven't even played more than half of the factions yet, since I like the High Elves just too much. ^^

Not only did it take too long it was pretty much broken.
Constantly opening and reopening the game to find the content not working when literally all the stuff I had payed for was working just fine and had downloaded and activated all in one package, especially when I did the "add all DLC to cart" method of payment made the reason/need for it all the more aggravatingly annoying.
I was already in a bad mood and that shit tipped me over the edge.

So, yeah, I am washing my hands of it.
It's broken, soured my experience of the game before even playing it and is honestly not worth it in a game I had a passing fancy for and got it on sale when it was kinda cheap. The only reason I kept putting time into it because I got that anger determination. By the time I got it to work I had no desire to play.
Not worth the aggro I went through, hopefully I get my money back.

Other current events aside, does seem like the corona panic is finally ending. Lots of people outside lately, few if any masks, clients are calling us up to do interior work, and boy I hope all the work I couldn't do so far this year still occurs. Helps that the weather is lovely lately. Plus I got an old bike one client was throwing away, apparently it's a good brand, and despite only one break working, I'd like to cycle again. Used to love that as a kid. Plus I need to do cardio.

The first set of panic is over, but also so is the vigilance.
There IS a second wave coming because people are relaxing.

Now I don't want people on edge all the time but I do want governments to live up to their jobs and actually make sure there are as little cases as possible before they worry about economies and shit.

When stuff like this crops up we know, at least in the UK, that this relaxed state is only going to make things worse.

If you can get work then be as safe as possible Vol.

If that's any consolation to you, today's my country Republic Day (the day after WWII where we voted to tell our king to fuck off and became a democracy) and over the last few days there's been several manifestation from several conspiritards groups and by the ultra-right parties demanding "Italy to be free again", that the Corona Virus outbreak was one big fakeout, and that we don't need to listen to the EU and the commies to take care of ourselves.

Italy also has the region on the whole continent with the biggest number of infected people, and funnily enough is one of the stronghold of the italian far-right too.

Stupidity is truly something all branches of humanity share.

I understand that it might be hard to see the glass half-full considering the situation, but all in all, didn't Italy dodge a bullet by having Salvini leave the government before the Covid outbreak? The country was hit hard already with reasonably sane people in charge, I shudder to think what could have been with that moron in the Interior minister.

Between Bolsonaro, Trump and Johnson, right-wing populists haven't shown a great ability at dealing with pandemics. It's not a universal rule of course but I think Salvini might have been right there with them - or worse since he could have been in a position of power in one of the first countries to deal with the outbreak.

The regi stuff in Ruby/Sapphire was my favourite thing in all of the pokemon games.

I hate how nintendo went about that game, but it is looking good with that dlc.

There are a ton of things in which Nintendo towers over almost all other video game editors in the world - product quality at release, among others - but when it comes to DLC they tend to really abuse the loyalty of their fanbase.

I bought the Fire Emblem: Three Houses DLC pass at release, it cost me 29 bucks (compared to 55 for the game itself), and the contents have nowhere been worth half the price of a full game (especially considering how much there was in the base game already). When you add that Nintendo games are famous for their base games whose prices never go down - they even go up sometimes when production stops...

But I don't know if there is a perfect editor when it comes to DLC management. Firaxis is pretty great though from what I have experienced.
