Happy New Year everyone. 2021 is unlikely to be the greatest year ever, but if we solve that virus problem, it might pave the way for better things in the future.

@Sci: Hey, compared to some of us, you're blazing a path. My weight's ping-ponged around a 15 pound range, and I never looked a bit different!
So what'd you boys come up with for resolutions? I find symbolism helps me to motivate far more than normal willpower, so New Years is a good time to force myself to be better.
Set some modest goals, ones that I can reasonably actually accomplish, but have neglected for one reason or another. One of which was getting back into my Japanese lessons. Want to learn a new kanji every week. 52 isn't a lot, you need a few thousand to be conversationally literate, and I only knew a few dozen, tops, back in college, but it's something. I expect once I'm into it, I'd learn a few a week.
Started today by flipping through my kanji dictionary, found "Sentry," shou, composed to the primitives for mouth, moon, and a roof. Simple, easy to remember, drew it a couple times to get it down, then looked it up online. Cannot find it anywhere. The kanji for "sentry" seems to be something entirely different. So that's a good start!

Damn you, man! I'm also trying to learn Japanese. But I'm beginning, so it's all new to me.
Konnichiwa, ogenki desu ka.
I'm just getting used to the hirigana alphabet right now.

Took 3 semesters in college, wish I could've gone more, but as some of you old timers might remember, I sorta collapsed inward for a number of reasons.
Konnichiwa! Boku wa Vol desu, oname wa nan desu ka?
Yeah, that's how we did it. Pure memorization of hirigana and katakana, then a lot of practice spelling words with them, then a tiny bit of kanji towards the end of the first semester.

Id like to learn Japanese, but I always circle back to "Why?"
I cant really do anything with it.

I tried to for a while, and it is a MASSIVE ball ache.
if you're not good with languages then try something easier/closer to English's roots.

My resolutions are simple: Survive.
Get back to looking like I can snap someone in half, get a 74 Chevy Nova, and fix my Jeep up. There'll be more goals, but those are the short term.

If I am gonna have a resolution it's to get back into art and maybe get my life in order to not be a failure.
Maybe get therapy once covid is over. Or life coach or....something.

Lose weight (for real this time) and resume working on my book. Hopefully actually start writing it, instead of plotting and working on characters. At least the basic worldbuilding is done by now. Modest goals. ^^
Re: Tali'Thread vas Clan Zorah nar BSN 6.0
I keep seeing a claim that the average adult native English speaker knows 20-30k words. That seems grossly overestimated. Though I wonder if that includes all possible uses of a word (i.e., run, ran, running, runner, jog, jogger, jogging, jogged, sprint, sprinter, sprinted, sprinting, all counting individually).
Re: Tali'Thread vas Clan Zorah nar BSN 6.0
Since brushing up on Japanese is one of my resolutions, putting what I learn here might help make it stick in my head.
~* Vol's Japanese Lessons *~
Kunyomi (くんよみ)-> The Japanese reading of kanji. Generally for stand alone kanji, such as inu (犬), or in words with hiragana, such as eat (食べる), or as part of a verb, such as "see things," (見る物)。
Onyomi (おんよみ)-> The Chinese reading of kanji. Generally used in words with no hiragana, 2 or more kanji, and する verbs.
Furigana (ふりがな)-> The hiragana above a kanji, most commonly seen in manga by us, to establish how it is to be read.
Okurigana (おくりがな)-> The hiragana after a kanji.
Jukugo (じゅくご)-> A word with 2 or more kanji in it.
Mind you, in multiple semesters of Japanese, we never actually learned this very important bit of information. Knowing which reading of a kanji to use beyond memorization is rather important.

And off I go on another shore work trip. I don't know why we're getting so many of these jobs, but fuck it, it's honest work and it pays well. Bit of a hassle to have to live remotely during them, but hey.
Also just found out that I _was_ in fact eligible for unemployment insurance, under the expanded aid acts. But for reasons of incompetence, when I applied, they sent me my documents and debit card with a $0 payout. And I kept checking to see if it changed, and it never did, so I stopped checking. On a whim, just checked it again, and at some point they updated it to a low, but very welcome, weekly amount. But no one ever told me, and now the claim's expired, so I can't get any of it.
Obviously welfare is less respectable than earning your own income, but having no income because of plague means getting hosed out of money legally due to me is extra sharp. Alas. See you guys Friday, if I can't get online sober between now and then.

Re: Tali'Thread vas Clan Zorah nar BSN 6.0
I'm learning Japanese because I want to be able to speak to Japanese composers. It's always been a dream of mine to work in Japan.
20-30k words might be lowballing it, because I know of words like 'antiquing'.
One of my resolutions is to start putting money aside for my Delorean. I've always had a general savings account, but nothing earmarked specifically for one item. Hopefully if I'm diligent I can afford to put money down on one in two years or so.
Have a fun work week Vol. Make some big bucks!

I cant play Persona 4 again.
I just cant.
I just played it like a couple months ago.
I'm currently playing Yakuza 7.
I can not play Persona 4 again.

Curious gaming news of the day: the final secret of Nier: Automata has been discovered. Apparently there's a hidden path that lets you jump to the real ending of the game shortly after the first bossfight. That crazy bastard of Yoko Taro confirmed via Twitter that it isn't a glitch or a cheat (well, it is technically, but an intentional one) but that it is indeed something he put in the game.

Well it was most likely a debug mode that they just never removed.
That way they could test whatever mission they needed without 4 playthroughs.

That would make a lot of sense. But the fact he buried it in the game and made it a feature is still kind of amusing.

The fact that it was never removed, sure.
But this is kind of how you do debug modes. Its a lot easier to just have it built into the game as opposed to something you have to program out and hope that nothing breaks.

Man, whatever happened to cheat codes?
Some time back I stopped using console commands to do dumb shit to have fun with vidya games and started using them to try to get myself out of a glitch. What happened man?

Sprinkle achievements in there and you have a good picture of why cheat codes are pretty much gone.

Man, cheat codes used to be awesome back in the day. Added a ton of relay value after you completed a game. Want to do another play-through but with all weapons unlocked right from the start, or a double sized mana meter, or warp to your favorite level, or a slow motion mode, or an extra hard difficulty mode, or all enemies have funny skins or big cartoony heads? There’s a code for that. I still remember some of those cheats by heart: NTHGTHDGDCRTDTRK and BEWAREOBLIVIONISATHAND are the master codes that unlock everything in Turok 1 and Turok 2. Useless trivia taking up space in my brain.
And remember the days of Game Shark and Game Genie?

Been a long road to get here. Not gonna be overly flowery or dramatic but I never really fit in with the general flow of personalities here and I figure it's time to be honest about that.
Sometimes it was fun. Sometimes it wasn't. The world is a shitty place so take care of yourselves.
