The project had been developed by Rideback’s Dan Lin and Vertigo’s Roy Lee, with an early script by David Coggeshall. Wingard will rewrite a script he’ll cowrite with Simon Barrett, and will turn all this into a hybrid of CGI and animation.
“Thundercats is a dream project for me. When I was in high school, I was obsessed with it. You’d think at that point, I was a little too old, that my years of obsession with Thundercats would be when I was six years old. My real obsession with Thundercats came in high school, the pinnacle of me deciding I wanted to be a filmmaker, and pushing in that direction…I actually spent most of my 10th grade year, I completely blew it. I didn’t pay attention in school, made terrible grades. And the reason? I was writing my Thundercats screenplay through my entire tenth grade year. And I was hand writing it. The screenplay itself ended up being 272 pages long. I still have it. It was one of those things where I would carry around my notebooks and talk about it. I didn’t even realize the kids in my class were making fun of me as they would ask me questions about my Thundercats screenplay. It was only one day my friends asked me and I was excitedly telling him all these things about my Thundercats screenplay. And I heard him turn around to some of the girls in the class, these were girls I had crushes on, and he’s making fun of me for writing Thundercats! Because it was ridiculous. But that was the first moment where I had a though that maybe I would not be able to make the Thundercats movie. I thought, am I crazy for obsessing over this, thinking it’s something you can just do? As it turns out, when you’re a kid in Alabama with no resources or connections to filmmaking, it is impossible to make a Thundercats film. But flash forward, 20 years later and here we are. I’m in a place where Godzilla vs. Kong has gone well with Warner Bros. They love the movie, as we were wrapping it. I heard there was a Thundercats script out there and it happened to be set up with some of my producers on Death Note. I asked them, I want to rewrite this script with my friend Simon Barrett. This is a huge passion thing for me. Nobody on this planet knows or has thought as much about Thundercats as I have. They gave me the reins. I saw this as an opportunity to do a new type of fantasy sci-fi spectacle film that people have never seen before. It’s got a rich mythology; the characters are fantastic. The colors. I want to do a Thundercats film that takes you back to that ‘80s aesthetic. I don’t want to reinvent the way they look; I want them to look like Thundercats. I don’t want to do it live action, either. I don’t want it to look like Cats, I don’t want those kinds of issues — no disrespect to that director, whom I don’t mean to throw under the bus any more than everyone else has. I want to do a movie you’ve never seen before. A hybrid CGI film that has a hyper real look and somehow bridges the gap between cartoon and CGI. That’s the starting point, and Simon Barrett and I are getting into the script now.”

I just saw Godzilla vs Kong and I enjoyed the hell out of it. I unabashedly, unequivocally love this film. And the day I apologize for that is the day the sun goes supernova. The film has its warts, but I love it all the same.

The best way I can describe this is that its like a Heisei Era Godzilla movie mixed with Pacific Rim, Journey to the Center of the Earth, Primal Rage, and Rampage. I saw this on HBO Max, but I plan to see this at a movie theater as soon as possible because damn, this is a spectacle that demands the biggest screen possible with the loudest sound system possible. The story moves at a very brisk pace, which while it does help get to the kaiju action quickly, it does come at a cost. I feel like there were a lot of scenes exploring more of the Hollow Earth left on the cutting room floor, as well as scenes to flesh out the human characters. Here’s hoping if that’s true they end up on the dvd. Most of the human characters are meh, some characters make idiotic decisions, and there’s some plot contrivances to move the story from one set piece to the next, among other things, but none of those issues dampened my enjoyment of this film. I had a giant, ridicuolous grin through huge chunks of this. Made me feel like a kid again. The film makes a promise and it delivers. The film operates under Rule of Cool first and foremost, so some things here will really stretch your suspension of disbelief if this kind of stuff isn't to your taste.

Excellent use of colors and lighting, great cinematography, creative and spectacular visuals, amazing cgi, and superb sound design. While not as good or as memorable as KOTM’s, the soundtrack does help sell the hype all the same. The film is very self-aware of itself, knowing exactly what it is and not pretending to be anything more, and goes into full crazy fantasy/sci-fi territory, with a lot of Pulp elements, in ways not even KOTM and K:SI did. The grounded, more realistic tone of 2014 is not here, so I can understand if some people are turned off by that. Both of our main monsters are treated with the respect they are due and presented as the regal characters they are. They both have personality and agency and drive the story. While Kong gets the bulk of the narrative focus and screen-time --which is only fair, as he’s only had one movie in this continuity compared to Godzilla’s two-- Godzilla’s impact whenever he comes into the story is always given enormous weight and importance.

The speed of the monsters has increased a lot in this film; while it does hamper the sense of mass and scale that Gareth Edwards was able to pull off in 2014, the sound editing helps hammer home the power of the impacts when the monsters land blows or smash into things, and it does make the combat more dynamic and vicious. Also, all the monster battles are clear and visible, either in the middle of the day, or brightly lit at night so you can see everything, with minimal cuts away so you can just bask in the glow of titans going at it.

Between the humans that are "Team Kong" and "Team Godzilla" in the film, I found Team Kong to be the more engaging. Especially Jia; her bond with Kong is genuinely sweet. The actress did a great job here. The Apex crew are forgettable, and the Ren Serizawa character is completed wasted here, though. Kong himself is the heart and soul of the movie. The film really makes him sympathetic and likable. And he has his own character arc.

The Big G wins! The clear and uncontested winner! Twice! Godzilla is victorious at the battle at sea, and at Hong Kong, proving without doubt or question that he’s the one true King of the Monsters! Hail to the king, baby! Also, getting to see Godzilla and Kong team up for the first time on film hits me right were I live.

The battle between the G-Man and big ape is such a joy to watch; I wish it went on even longer. Kong eventually does that big ax move you see in the trailer, and both monsters get thrown back from the explosion. Kong gets up first, and one of Team Kong’s humans says “I guess round 2 goes to Kong”, but their celebration is premature, because Godzilla gets back up moments later having taken that attack like a champ. Kong’s taken the opportunity to scale a building to surprise attack his foe from the air while he was briefly down, and the battle continues. At this point you can see Godzilla’s patience is quickly evaporating, and when Kong jumps on his back to pummel him, Godzilla fucking SNAPS. Godzilla pulls the “I’ve been holding back but now I’ve had enough and I’m going all out” card. He goes into full primal rage beast mode, and starts effortlessly tossing Kong around like a ragdoll, never giving him a moment to recover, mauling him like a bear, dislocating his shoulder with a horrific crunch, and tail-whipping him off his feet. Kong is no longer fighting back; he’s just trying to stay alive, desperately trying to crawl away as Godzilla rushes after him on all fours like a demon crocodile from hell, and Kong’s face shows not just pain, but fear. He knows he’s lost this fight, and never had a chance to begin with. This isn’t a battle anymore; it’s a savage curbstomp. Godzilla jumps on him and absolutely shreds his chest with his claws before literally stomping him into the dirt -- twice. Kong is pinned and helpless, dead to rights. Godzilla roars right in his face to declare victory, and Kong roars back in defiance, refusing to yield and give up even at the very end, but Godzilla is not impressed; he walks away with a contemptible snort, not even bothering to blast him into ashes. Kong tries to stand and roar as if to say they’re not done but he collapses and falls unconscious, his broken body laying in the rubble of a ruined city, and his wounds from the brutal ass-kicking he received are so great he’s literally dying. Kong only lives because the humans restart his heart with their hover-tank.

There’s a lot of little details in the fight that let you know Godzilla has fought and defeated other Kongs before in the past and has experience to draw upon. When Kong tries to go for his “T-Rex jawbreaker” move, Godzilla lets loose with his atomic breath in short bursts, forcing Kong to let go lest he get his fingers burned off, and Godzilla knows to separate Kong from his weapon, and spam his beam when he’s at range, etc. Likewise, you see Kong utilize his cunning by adapting his tactics against Godzilla based on what’s working and not working; Kong sees that aiming for Godzilla’s head and neck produces better results than aiming for his torso, knows to try to stop him from using his atomic breath or running for cover if he can’t, knows to not stay out in the open, uses the environment as best he can, etc. Yes, we do get a “EAT YOUR VEGETABLES!” reference. Kong shoves the handle of his ax down Godzilla’s throat early on to stop him from blasting his head off with his atomic breath.

Mechagodzilla is also the Monsterverse’s Mecha King Ghidorah, in spirit if not in form. They’re using Ghidorah’s brain for a wetware CPU supercomputer telepathic interface to allow a human pilot to control it as if it were their own body, but Ghidorah is still alive and is just waiting to seize MG for himself. This is what Godzilla is sensing and making him angry: he not only senses a challenger to his alpha Titan status, but its his hated archenemy back from the dead, and the Big G is doing everything in his power to make sure he doesn’t return. MG looks like a cross between a Godzilla-shaped Terminator and a Bionicle. Taller than Godzilla, but almost skeletally thin by comparison. Ghidorah takes the opportunity to ASSUME DIRECT CONTROL of MG when they finally have the means to power it with the Hollow Earth energy and now has a mechanical anti-Titan body to get vengeance on Godzilla. (And this is Ghidorah’s left head puppetting MG, remember. San, aka Kevin, is back, and he is PISSED. Ichi and Ni would be so proud. Godzilla vs Kong: Revenge of Kevin! ) MG is crazy fast and utterly ferocious in combat as well as being super powerful; not even the combined efforts of Godzilla and Kong working together is enough to get an advantage. Its only when Team Godzilla damage the computer at the APEX base that links Ghidorah’s telepathic interface with MG making MG glitch for a few moments, giving our kaiju heroes the precious few seconds they need to turn the tide, that allows for its destruction. Godzilla supercharges Kong’s ax with his atomic breath, effectively turning it into a lightsaber, and Kong goes to town on MG like Kratos from God of War, chopping off limbs with every swing, before ripping off MG’s head Predator-style. Godzilla approaches Kong, who thinks they’re going to fight again, but then sees that the G-Man’s body language is one of gratitude, not hostility. Kong doesn’t bow, but he does drop the ax as a sign of respect, which Godzilla accepts as good enough, and with mutual understanding established, goes back to the sea, while Kong goes back to the Hollow Earth.

Kong’s tenacity is amazing; there are several moments in the film where Kong is powering through a ton of pain and exhaustion but just keeps going. You can see that his “never give up!/go beyond my limits!” attitude annoys Godzilla at first because he stubbornly won’t submit to the rightful King, but when MG shows up, Godzilla learns to appreciate it because it makes for a good ally. Even though Kong is second best compared to Godzilla, he’s still an undeniable badass in his own right. Losing to Godzilla is nothing to be ashamed about, and his takedown of MG is epic as fuck.

Godzilla is an absolute tank in this movie; he takes hits like a boss and keeps on coming like an unstoppable juggernaut. Kong can hurt him, but its like his proverbial health bar is three times bigger than Kong’s. He even gets hit by Kong’s empowered ax in the leg at one point, and all that does is make it easy for Godzilla to send Kong flying, before pulling the weapon out with his teeth and tossing it away. The only time he gets in trouble is against MG, who’s juiced up on the Hollow Earth energy, and quicker than he can keep up with.

Godzilla’s atomic breath is insane in this. Its much more powerful, requires less charge time, has massive range, and when at full power, can BLAST THROUGH THE PLANET’S CRUST ALL THE WAY DOWN TO THE HOLLOW EARTH CREATING A TUNNEL BIG ENOUGH FOR A TITAN TO MOVE THROUGH. (Context: Godzilla can sense that someone is messing around with the Hollow Earth energy and decides to bury whoever’s responsible by blasting down into the Hollow Earth with his breath, causing a cave-in.) Legendary Godzilla’s beam is stronger than Shin Godzilla’s by a wide margin.

Mechagodzilla-Ghidorah tries to kill Godzilla with the same “Kiss of Death” move the G-Man used against the female Muto back in 2014, and is only saved from the same fate by Kong. We also get a DBZ beam clash between Godzilla and MG.

The other Titans introduced in KOTM aren’t present, but the only one that seems to be dead is Methuselah, if the monster brackets in the intro credits is any indication. I guess the others were just chillin' in their dens or went back to hibernation.

The Hollow Earth is cool and the new monsters we see down there are pretty sweet. The gravity gets all wonky in places, and Kong's ancestors had a huge mountain fortress that kinda looks like Moria from Lord of the Rings. There's a rich potential for fascinating mythology and history to be explored that this film just barley taps into; I hope we get more, if not in the form of another movie than at least in the concept art book.

Kong understandably doesn’t want to help Godzilla in his fight against MG-Ghidorah after almost getting killed by him, but Jia convinces him to do so, and the look of surprise on Godzilla's face when Kong comes to his rescue is hilarious. Also, Kong pops his shoulder back into place by shoulder-checking a building=Awesome.

Juuuust finished watching GvK, and yeah. It's dumb, it's loud and it's fun. So exactly what I was looking for.

I still think KotM is my favorite of the bunch, just because I'm so much or a fan of the Toho kaiju and the soundtrack was so fucking good, but in terms of visuals this is definately the highlight of the Monsterverse, Kong, Goji and the others look amazing and super-detailed. They jump and run around a bit too much for my taste giving their immense size, but it gets truly ridiculous only in a couple spots, and since in the last movie Godzilla was dropped from the f-ing orbit, I don't feel like I should complain too much.

The human characters are... serviceable. Kind of annoyed Madison tags along with a cospiritard and a fat hispanic stereotype all the movie, but it never gets Michael Bay bad. Ren Serizawa is never enstablished as Doc. Serizawa's son, nor is given much of a personality at all. But oh well.

The music was also serviceable. The main "kaiju attack" theme that plays in most of the fight scenes sound a lot like something out of Pacific Rim, and there's no trace of Ifukube's original score. But since Godzilla is functionally the antagonist for most of the movie, that actually works fine.

One thing I will say is that I think they should have kept the original Kong vs Godzilla title, because the big ape is definately the p.o.v. titan in this flick. Which is fair, since MV Godzilla got two movies under his belt and he only one. Both titans have a lot of personality and a fair amount of screentime, tho.

Not much to say in terms of spoilers that wasn't already put in the leaks, which were mostly correct. Except for the real crazy stuff like the KotM titans showing up (there's a bit of stock footage of them in the opening credits and a vague mentions most Titans have kept a low profile for a few years now) or post credit scenes teasing much bigger and stronger monsters. There's no post-credits in fact. My guess is that they played it safe, just in case this does turn out to be the last movie. Which I don't think it will be, considering the numbers is making despite the pandemic and the multiple review bombings.

Apparently some tidbits from the upcoming GvK novelization and Godzilla Dominion comic are out and they address the other titans, both before and during the events of the film:

Upon sensing Ghidorah's presence for the first time when Apex first started their MG tests, Godzilla commanded all the other titans to go into a deep sleep to protect them until he destroyed Ghidorah once and for all in case Ghidorah was still able to do another Alpha call and make them his thralls again.

During the years between KOTM and GvK, we learn that:

--the titan Amhuluk tried to muscle in on Behemoth's turf in the Amazon, and Godzilla had to intervene. Amhuluk was forced to leave and find territory elsewhere.

--Scylla got a little too mischievous with human cities in Georgia, forcing Godzilla to deal with her. Humbled, she retreated to an island off the tip of South America and resides in a freezing lake.

--the new titan Na Kika gets captured by humans in the Sea of Okhotsk before Godzilla rescued her.

--Rodan is apparently a lot more social then his behavior in KOTM suggested once he cools that hot temper of his down (or maybe he's trying to get on Godzilla's good side after that whole attacking Mothra thing); he's mentioned as flying all over the world and visits other titans on his travels. Scylla and Quetzalcoatl are mentioned by name as some of the titans he checks in on. He also never stays in one spot for too long. He almost made a nest on Skull Island, but decided against doing so. Monarch speculates the presence of Kong had something to do with that.

Methuselah is mentioned, but in what regard, I don't know. The details end there for now.

I think I'm the only person on this board who has always been a staunch defender of Zack Snyder. His 4-hour movie dropped at midnight on the dot at March 18th, and I told myself I would watch the first part because I was one of those rallying voices asking for his cut. I ended up watching all four hours of it in one sitting. Then I watched it again the following day with others. I adore it.

I consider this one of the most important movies to ever be made; even if you personally dislike it, and there is nothing wrong with that, the odyssey it went through just to see the light of day justifies my reasoning. Even if you completely scrubbed Zack Snyder's name from this movie, it is undeniably his when you watch it. It has all of his DNA, and you couldn't mistake it for anyone else, and I mean this in the best way.

His movies do not have mass-market appeal, and I have made my peace with that after Dawn of Justice was released. He aims to make his movies with a distinct flair that not everyone will care for, and his very own Justice League is all of his and cranked up to 11. I am a fan, and this delivered everything I wanted both from a Justice League film, and a film with Zack's name on it. His passion, even if you consider it misguided, is evident in every minute of this film, and everyone onboard with him that made this movie poured their hearts into it. I can't say this movie is without fault, but because of all of this soulful filmmaking I can forgive a lot.

I am so relieved to see how much vindication Zack has been receiving ever since this was announced, and all of the affirmation now that it's here. I consider this an important movie because this was a movie made with tremendous passion and risk, and I feel we need more movies made with both of those elements. We need more movies where a director and his team is allowed to give everything without such a daunting leash around them.

Zack Snyder's Justice League, I believe, gave everyone what they needed. It gave him that second chance, it gave the devoted fans the epic they hoped for, it gave the people who don't like his movies the biggest and loudest seal of 'not for me', and it gave the industry a reminder on what an uncut and unchained movie can deliver.

I never hated the 2017 version, I tolerated it on the best days. I rewatched it before I saw the Snyder Cut, and in hindsight Zack's movie utterly shames Whedon's. Everything in the 2017 version is toothless and turned into a fucking joke compared to what we were originally meant to be given. Cyborg, Flash, and Steppenwolf were the biggest casualties. Batman was a shell of what he used to be. More than half of the movie looked cheap and lazy. It boggles the mind on what the executives were thinking when they demanded a shorter runtime with more jokes and less seriousness.

One of the worst cases of this disparity between Zack's vision and the studio's backwards thinking was the climax in Russia. In Snyder's movie, Steppenwolf actually wins. The Mother Boxes merge, the Unity is complete, and Cyborg looks up in horror before everything in the blink of an eye is vaporized. Flash survives only because he phases through the world-ending pulse because Speed Force shenanigans. In that scene Flash blitzes as fast as he can, going beyond his limit and you see him running through space into the star that is the Mother Box Unity. The Earth itself literally reforms beneath his feet as he reverses time to undo the end of the world and ends up saving the day.

In Whedon's cut, Flash pushes a pick-up truck with the random Russian villagers that were nowhere to be scene in Snyder's. Flash doesn't even get his moment here, either. Superman flies right by holding a building filled with people and further dooming Flash into the mediocrity he suffered in the 2017 version.

Someone actually thought that replacing the latter scene with the former was the right call. Hundreds of thousands of dollars were wasted on a scene that we almost didn't get. Hundreds of thousands of dollars more were wasted on the reshoot that only dug a deeper grave for DC's cinematic platform.

Anyway, it's difficult to get into further detail without going on and on and on about how much this movie meant to me and many, many others. I think it's worth a watch even if you don't like Zack's work, because it might surprise you.

I've said before that I don't think Zack Snyder was the right guy to handle DC's big heroes and help set the tone and direction of their cinematic universe, and I still stand by that. However, that being said, having seen the SynderCut for myself, I do absolutely agree that its miles better than the version that came out in theaters, which is a butchered mess by comparison. Like, regardless of what one feels about the SynderCut itself, its superior to the theatrical cut. This version actually has character development and character arcs and proper build-up and narrative set-up and emotional payoffs. Obviously the longer run time helps in that regard, but even besides that, it's still objectively better than the theatrical cut. Everyone on the team gets their moments to shine to highlight what they bring to the table so no one feels superfluous or unnecessary, and you actually get to see them learn how to be a team. And what this movie does for Cyborg and Flash is stunning; they clearly got shafted the most by the studio and Whedon.

While Snyder's interpretation of the JL isn't my cup of tea, all the Darkseid stuff was cool enough that I actually would be curious to see what a "Zack Snyder's Justice League 2" would look like, in all honesty. I'm not sure that will ever come to pass, but stranger things have happened, and rumors suggest there's growing support for it at WB behind the scenes despite what they've said publicly, so who knows. In any case, despite my manifold disagreements with his vision, I'm happy that the man was able to put out the film he wanted to make after all that studio interference and his personal family tragedy. Its even won over some people; I know because my father and brother-in-law are examples of that: they were not fans of Man of Steel, BvS, or the theatrical JL, but they both loved the SynderCut.

There are things in Jhosstice League that aren't that awful either tho. He did add a few decent character moments, used the fact the Flash is young and inexperienced to explain why he's "nerfed" throught the movie and his explanation of why the Mother Boxes reactivated makes at least a little bit more sense. I know the guy is midway cancellation, and that he might even deserve it more than most from what I've heard. But when it comes to the JLA movie, I think it's safe to say the studio screwed over both directors. Even the Snyder Cut despite being promoted as "Snyder's true and untouched vision" still had some degree of studio meddling.
