I'm currently in a bit of a slump as for my own gaming, because Total War: Rome Remastered didn't hold my interest for as long as I wished. The late game, with the endless build queues and the non-replenishing armies, is just a bit too much of a slog and I abandoned both a Julii and a Seleucid campaign when it became clear, that I only would have to conquer a lot of more territory to win, but the real danger of losing was already lost. I must say, the solutions found by more modern Total War games actually do appeal to me more, because they remove so much micromanagement.

Currently ping-pong'ing between a few games I already own but have never really pursued to find something which holds my interest. I tried Battlestar Galactica: Deadlock, but after a few hours it turned out to be not as interesting as I had hoped, since the battes felt repetitive and the story was razor thin. Now looking at Starpoint Gemini Warlords to see if that may be something for the next week. Considered going for X4 Foundations, but that would be such a huge time investment to learn the ropes in the first place, which has been putting me off the game for many months. And I got a new RPG in a sale, Greedfall, which is a fantasy swashbuckling setting.

I also might take up an already existing (and actually finished months ago) Total War: Three Kingdoms campaign with Ma Teng, because the latest patch (still in the beta testing stage) fucking finally allows imperial governors who control the emperor to restore the Han empire, instead of only declaring themselves to be emperor. That was my idea with my Ma Teng campaign from the start and I was quite disappointed when that option wasn't offered some months ago. I found the save just before I took that final plunge and already confirmed that with the beta patch I can just continue from there declaring the Han emperor restored. I might also finally do the Beastlord Rakarth dark elf campaign in Total War: Warhammer II. But I think that one will have to wait until the games listed below are done.

Next weekend Mass Effect Legendary Edition drops AND Subnautica Below Zero. Also, at the end of May, the first expansion pack for Mechwarrior 5, named Heroes of the Inner Sphere, also drops, so I'll probably be good until at least to the middle or end of June.

My new monitors are en route, but of course things can't go smoothly, can't they? The company who sold the monitors sent me a broken tracking link and then put their entire booking system into maintenance mode, due to software updates, for the entire weekend and probably Monday as well. Which probably accounts for the broken tracking link. And, since next week has a holiday in Germany, my colleague took a vacation for the entire week, so I don't have any home office days either. I presume the things will arrive on Monday and either the delivery service will take them to a nearby depot (not good, but I could call a cargo taxi to get them the 500 meters home... not even gonny try to carry two about 15 kg each giant boxes by hand) or they'll send a message that they will deliver another day, where I hopefully will be able to delay the delivery until Saturday. In any case, not optimal. I actually favor the first method, so that I can get the damned things sooner.

And all that because Amazon fucked me by listing the monitors as available (they STILL DO), when they were not. And then took four days to find out and notify me. I always have to remind myself that we are in a pandemic and that means things are not as efficient as one would normally expect. Still very frustrating.

I've always sort of looked at it as a way to legally invest in the black market. I know it's more than just that but, hey, diversification!

That's exactly what it is. The lack of regulation celebrated by the crytospunk is one of the core reasons why anything crypto is incredibly risky and inherently volatile. It's about as volatile as you can get. You have no legal or regulatory support. It's 100% on you to manage, and if shit happens, you lose everything and need to 100% finance any action taken to try and recover.

At a Financial Institution, deposit accounts (checking, savings, CD, MMA, IRA, etc.) are all insured up to $250k by regulatory bodies like the FDIC or NCUA. If those accounts get stolen, or if the bank implodes overnight, the government protects you and you get your money back. The chances of this happening are very slim however. I'm a bank auditor - I work with a ton of FIs to go through their liquidity. The vast majority could, in the case of an extreme liquidity crisis, cover at least 90% of their deposits with their liquid and semi-liquid assets. With Crypto, if you lose your wallet, you're fucked. Blockchain transactions are inherently non-reversible, so if you get scammed/want a refund, you're fucked (you'd need the recipient to initiate a transaction sending the money back - nothing else will get your money back). If you hold your wallet with a third party like Coinbase or Binance and you lose that account, get scammed, or something goes wrong, it's up to the good-graces of that company whether or not they help you recover you losses because there's no legal or regulatory backing protecting you. Best hope you can afford your own lawyer because literally any effort to recover what you lost or what was taken from you is 100% your liability.

As an investment item, the lack of regulation also means you're less informed about the item. With publicly traded companies (the companies any US citizen can buy/sell shares in) are SEC regulated and need to file quarterly and annual reports (10-K and 10-Q reports), and countless other reports that all disclose insider information. All of these reports are publicly available through the SEC's EDGAR system and are intended to give enough insider knowledge into the company to know if investing is a good idea or not. Similarly with bonds, they require detailed disclosures about who is issuing the bond and what it will be used for. This doesn't exist with crypto. In some cases you can search through public records of the blockchain to track transactions, but what *actually* is the thing you are buying? Do you want to know who's invested in this or who has a material interest in it? You get nothing. If a company you invested in commits a crime, is found out, and their value tanks, you have a legal right to the liquidation of that company through your shares. If a cryptocurrency is found to be fraudulent, you get nothing.

I've spent some time recently looking into crypto, blockchain, NFTs, things like that. It's 100% all horseshit. The more you look into what crypto is and translate the mind-numbingly vague and nonsensical terms invented for it into english (arguably this is intentional in order to make you not really think about it), the less and less it holds up. Basically none of the arguments *for* crypto don't hold up under any serious scrutiny. If you're interested in investing in crypto, you need to be 100% prepared to lose every single dollar you put into it (arguably this is the case for any investment, but due to crypto's volatility, this is more the case here than anywhere else).

But, under the "free market*," it doesn't need to have *real* value for it to be *valuable*. The "market" defines value by the amount of desire for a thing vs how much of that thing is available, not how much value it actually has. So, crypto currencies have value, despite them being fundamentally worthless, failing to accomplish anything not already accomplishable with non-crypto methods significantly higher rates of efficiencies, millions of times less energy efficient than traditional methods of transactions, unregulated, unguaranteed, devastating to the environment, and unscalable.

For disclosure purposes: I'm invested slightly in crypto, moreso as a way of seeing "what is actually happening here" than anything else.

@magnus: I know exactly what you mean. I get cyclical "moods," where I either play a very specific game/genre, or nothing at all, until the mood shifts. Just came off on, more or less, where I was doing nothing but browsing/reading instead of gaming, until a friend got me into Valheim.

Now I'm playing Story of Seasons: Mineral Town, because it's the remake of the PS1 game I really liked. It really could stand to have more meat on the bones, but its deceptively simple, and the rote schedule and clunkiness is kinda calming. You can't think about anything else but your routine or you fuck up and lose a day's shipments. Gave me some great ideas for my own take on the concept if nothing else. And after a year of going back to the barnhouse alone, getting a wijfe feels weirdly enjoyable. Despite extremely limited mechanics and dialogue, the presence does something for me. Though they've also given into the winds of the time and made gender agnostic waifus, so there's not a clean delineation between making friends with the guys and making them want your cock. Plus you gotta work twice as hard for the harem achievement. But otherwise, it's pretty neat. I'd really like to make a farming simulator of my own.

So yeah. The slump always passes. A leisurely jog through ME aught do the mind some good. It made me like Andromeda far more than you guys, after marathoning the trilogy and finishing literally hours into launch day.

I'm cripplingly financially illiterate when it comes to "legit" investments, as I've never had enough money to concern myself with anything more than stockpiling for the next disaster. So some silly money that I can afford to lose is neat. My portfolio is up $4.50, with sale fees, that'd be break even! Heh.

@Spartan: Right, see, I understand what you're saying. The fine details sound like a kind of arcane incantation, but the point of what crypto _actually is_ makes sense. Hence my ignoring it for like a decade. Still fondly recall early on, when some of my dipshit friends traded what I think was around 20 full Bitcoins (Not entirely sure) for a Papa John's pizza, and were all hyped up that the coins they'd spent $200 in electricity mining had real value. I suspect right now that seems like less of a wise move, but as I said, it all _seemed_ like nonsense. Who would ever pay real money for this stuff?

And as it turns out, "other people." Not that I'm putting serious money into anything. Spent $50, across 4 cryptos, so I'm content to sit and play with it. Not that the real money system makes more sense. Seems like we're conjuring theoretical wealth generations in advance to pay for stuff now without any reason to suspect that far distant wealth, or people to generate it, will actually exist. But then it seems like it doesn't matter, so long as everyone else think it does. I'll stop there, as it becomes political past that point. But I think of crypto as dodgy, but the instability means you might be able to make a quick buck as people latch onto anything but the dollar. Or get a laugh.

After fiddling about for some hours, I finally settled with the TW: Three Kingdoms Ma Teng campaign, where I almost immediately transitioned to reviving the Han Empire. Took a while to wipe out the other two emperor pretenders (or better said, capture their capitals), not to mention that I wasn't even finished, but needed to reach 95 settlements owned as well, including the ones from allies. Making it more difficult was a bug (since it's a beta patch not too unexpected to find those), where I couldn't manually save and had to rely on autosaves. Made me rage-quit in the middle of it, when I just had won a really difficult battle against with one army on forced march against two enemy armies and, not realizing the bug yet, restarted the game, because I wanted to call my mom. Oh, well. When I had calmed down, I re-did the battle, won it again with difficulty, then proceeded to play it safe and gang up on enemies with always two armies.

Next up will probably be Starpoint Gemini Warlords, which seems to be pretty intuitive. I'll really start out this evening when I get back from work, unless my monitors have arrived in a depot by then. It's possible that they haven't shipped after all, though, since their website is up again and my order history says the monitors are not shipped. Maybe their e-mail from Friday evening was sent out by error, would explain the broken tracking link. I'll call their customer service during the day to clear it up.

As for Andromeda, the things I really hated where the bland characters, fucking endless grindy bitch quests (go to the four corners of the map, plant emitters, do this a hundred times!) and some hilariously bad visual storytelling. See the Krogan "fist fight" for leadership. It really wasn't my cuppa tea.

I don't know that much either. So far my strategy of parking everything in Total Market Index Funds has worked perfectly well. I have 0 ability to predict the market so trying to just *be* the market seems like the best tactic. Once I'm older and can't handle the volatility in the market anymore I'll probably park it all in some kind of boring, stable bonds. Or just do what my dad did and buy land. Texas has stupidly good homestead laws especially for old people so this is far from the worst strategy. Buy a bunch of land in West Podunk with minimal property taxes and sit on the porch.
