Persona 4: The XP/cash penalty on VH is pretty severe. Been grinding out the first dungeon, and the only real source of XP is the Golden Hands. Which are real hard to kill with only Chie's Rebellion to boost crit rate. Smart Bombs do a flat 100, which is gravy, but they're very rare chest drops. From memory, need to be about 20 to handle the second dungeon, only 18 after a few hours of this.

On the plus side, seems like it makes having an Izanagi only run real simple. He's up in the 30's with all stats 20-50 right now from shuffle cards.

I may have overleveled. Breezed through the second dungeon, one shot the boss, barely used mana. Oh well. The third dungeons where shit gets real, so I might need to grind anyway. Izanagi is nearly level 40, but still has the tier 1 attacks/buffs, and I don't actually know when the tier 2 cards drop to upgrade him. Otherwise, the story arcs of the Dojimas is hitting me harder as I age up, while the friends arcs lose some.

Well, 5 months in, and I'm still on track with the New Years goals. Low bar, as I've said, but I'm surprised with myself. There's a sort of mental iron in sticking to these arbitrary goals I haven't had before. Though motivation in general is something I seem to lack. Its nice. Need to do better than I am, because doing a page of gesture drawings an hour before midnight on Sunday isn't quite in the spirit of "sketching," but duping oneself into being better requires giving some ground.

I really hate grinding so I just used those XP boost options they added. It enables you to completely avoid 50% of the terrible procedurally generated dungeons if you want.

I also just truly beat Zelda: Link's Awakening for the first time. I played this a ton as a kid on the original Game Boy but never got past the 8th dungeon (which is weird because I'd argue the 7th dungeon is technically harder). I think the issue is that the 8th dungeon is a rat's nest of secret passages and the new version on the Switch allows you to put map pins so you don't have to remember what goes where. It never occurred to kid me to write stuff down and my memory for stuff like that is terrible. Other than Breath of the Wild I tend to prefer the top down Zeldas more for whatever reason. It's probably a lot of nostalgia but I'd still have to say this is my favorite Zelda game though I've only played like half of them and haven't finished all of those.

This game looks really good and the first one was the first PS4 game that actually impressed me with its visuals. I'm hoping Aloy is less of an insufferable know-it-all this time around. Her whole persona is like "You don't understand. I've lived in the woods with 1 guy my whole life and never been outside a 1 mile radius of my house until now, but I know how things are and you guys are all idiots."

Still more tolerable than your average Rey-type of female lead, tho there's definately a resemblance. But Zero Dawn's biggest strenght was always its world and its gameplay, so as long as they keep acing those, I think it's gonna be fine.

kind of yes, she does have some motivation like she really wants to know who her mother/parents are because of how she is/was threated for basically her whole life by her people who are a lot more close minded then she is (which she is probably is because of the piece of tech on her ear that showed her a video message, when she was a kid, from a father who wanted to celebrate his son's birthday one of those old people that her people condemns for being well close to monsters that destroyed the world because of being sinful).

So there is a bit meat on the bone in terms of her character or at the bare minimum she has a goal that helps drive the story forward can't really say the same thing about Rey or Jacob...

I don't think she's a plank of wood even if she is a very well-used character type with nothing that really makes it stand out in any particular interesting way. I also didn't mind her being combative since she has objective reasons to be (being banished by one tribe and then attacked by another).

The issue is that she is serving as a kind of game commentary on how stupid everybody's customs are. Both in a moral sense because said customs have done her wrong (which is merited on her part) and in a weird skeptic "scientific" sense because she was lucky enough to find this doohickey in a cave as a kid. So she has merited moral indignation but also plot knowledge of why everything is wrong that nobody else that she is judging has. And because she has moral distaste for it all, her motives come off as very "I'm doing all this for *me* reasons because you people are unethical idiots and I'm not going to waste time on trying to reform things or correct you. I'm just going to sit here in my smug knowledge that I know more than you *and* that my morals are better."

Meanwhile, she is learning what a clusterfuck the old world was and how it literally destroyed *everything* which is hardly an argument that the world in her convenient doohickey is a better or "truer" one.

To be fair, it's been several years since I last played it and I'm certain I'm missing some of the nuances and just operating on my lasting impressions.

The reason I compare her to Jacob is because of a specific attitude Jacob puts forward if you ask him much about his past. Again, I'm operating on several year old memory so my recollection of exactly what he says isn't perfect. But he basically says something like "I've got my emotional shit figured out and I did it fast too" in this exceedingly dismissive way that implies anybody who *doesn't* have their emotional baggage figured out to some level Jacob deems appropriate is deficient in some way and not worth any time. Sera in DA:I is the same way. Anybody who is remotely confused about elf stuff or magic stuff or class stuff and hasn't figured it out on exactly the lines that she has figured it out is a "loser" of some kind.

It's like, I dunno, some teenager who just read *insert annoying philosophy here: Ayn Rand, the Communist Manifesto, Nietzsche, whatever* for the first time and is now so convinced they know the answers that they just dismiss everybody else with smirks and statements like "Someone like *you* would think that."

If this was all set up as a learning process for her and she eventually got better, it would actually be an interesting character arc. But she is presented as being 100% correct in these assessments and pretty much never has to update her opinion or change her mind.

Based on the ease of the second dungeon, pretty sure a sufficiently prepared player could manage it at the "natural" level you'd finish the first at with absolutely perfect knowledge of what to expect. Otherwise, grinding for no other reason than money for consumables and the ability to actually fuse necessary Personas seems mandatory.

The party is coming up on 30 now, with no grinding but for a pass of the second dungeon for the side quest drops + the new boss, and I know I can clear the third dungeon easily. The fourth will be tricky. The fifth will be rough, that one's hard even with normal XP as I recall. Seems like the best way to do this is to wait for the lightning days, go into the TV, and go for Golden Hands/chests solely.

But yeah, I had to, ironically, grind myself into being able to grind. Listening to smart people talking about subjects I don't understand, or watching terrible horror movies, helps.

On that note, going through the free selection of them on my Roku, it seems like some of the newer ones lost the basic concept of "good vs evil" personified. A few of them were mildly evil vs evil, and other than the dumb spectacle, its like drinking dehydrated water.

Yeah, fair enough. Maybe I should have said she's more bland/generic than whooden. There's nothing terribly wrong with Aloi as a character, it's just that compared to the world she lives in and its story, she's by far the least interesting part of Horizon: Zero Dawn. At least to me.

Stopped at Taco Bell after work. They've completely done away with register ordering, at the one I go to at least. Touch pads only, and the one I used was broken. It took several minutes of trying to speak to the non-English speaking staff before I found out the broken kiosk had magically fixed itself for the people behind me. My ability to consistently involve myself in socially awkward moments through no casual force of my own is remarkable.

Yeah, 100% agreed. I couldn't empathize much with her, really disliked her smug personality. Not to mention the schizophrenic "I CAN'T HELP YOU NO TIME" / "Of course I can help you find your dog!" whiplash you get between main quests and side quests. Oh, and I was very annoyed at the grimderp background setting. Everyone held multiple idiot balls, except the holy genetic ancestor of Aloy. Hooray.
