I didn't get him my first try but it seemed pretty obvious what to do with him once you realize what kind of fight it is. Namely, clear out all his goons before they can raise the alarm, convince as many people as possible to help you fight him, and then get in his face with melee people because he's an archer. I dunno. Maybe people who just ran in guns blazing got hit hard but that kinda strikes me as not a great strategy in general. When I say he's easy I don't mean you have 0 reloads or don't have to readjust. I mean what you did wrong was easy to identify, easy to correct, and thus he's no problem beyond the initial encounter. This is one reason discussions of strategy and balance and such tend to be a dead end. It's so utterly subjective what is and isn't hard or appropriate. My own opinion on the topic is undefinable. The best I can come up with consistently is "it's bad if it's based on perfect build optimization or item spam. It's bad if there's only really 1 effective way to do it. There was a haze in NJ today, apparently from the wildfires out in Oregon. Which is impressive. But I was grateful, because I spent the day painting a deck, and even with the sun partially obstructed, it was unpleasant. At least I could smell the burning wood, time to time.

Does anyone else play ARMA 3?

After years of getting filtered by the convoy ambush mission, I'm finally breezing through most of the campaign in that game and having a lot of fun! So long as I don't get filtered by this "defend against enemy armor" mission. But I've discovered that as fun as singleplayer can be, the reason this is mainly a co-op game is that friendly AI is... suboptimal, lets say. That and after I finally fucking beat The East Wind campaign, I wanna replay the Apex Protocol campaign and wondered if anyone would be up for that.

Well, I'd say that doing what you did, i.e. killing / convincing the minions first without triggering the main encounter, is thinking tactically, i.e. good encounter design. Although having a mechanically powerful party of course always helps, but that's a system mechanic of Pathfinder. You totally can build your characters wrong by taking less powerful options and make things more difficult for you that way, just as much as you can take optimal options and make things easier for you. Since you are still low-level that isn't felt as much yet as it will be in later levels.

Let's just say that in the last chapter of the entire campaign there will be a long dungeon where you absolutely need to have some stuff prepared to not just uninstall the game out of frustration. Get back to me when you reach... the house. ^^

I spent a lot of time cutting my teeth on Medieval 2, and that AI is, to steal a quote, "borderline experimental." Shit didn't _work_, to the point that running the battles without a timer was courting disaster. Enemies would refuse to move during siege defense, or send 1 ship blockades to your ports, which instantly is a declaration of war, for seemingly random reasons, and so on. Plus pathfinding outside of field battles was near useless. Trying to put a unit on or off the walls did not work, period. For some ungodly reason, they insisted of simulating every single man in the unit, and if one man got stuck trying to go up/down, then the whole production came to a halt.


So "mostly functional" is decent enough for me, is my point.

Been playing a campaign with the Lizardmen in Total War:Warhammer 2. A lot of fun.
And a lord with Maz in it's name being a big old fatty lizard is giving me all sorts of fun vibes.

Lizardmen is probably the best faction to learn to play with. High Elves are better overall, and provide the more general Total War experience, but juggling the tiers of melee, ranged, cav, monsters, magic, economy, etc., can be a lot to jump into. Whereas the scaly boys, the saurus are tough line infantry until end game, the skirmishing isn't great because it's LOS, but the monsters are so armored and strong you can effectively through them into combat and not worry about micro (to a point). Plus their magic is strong as fuck, not many trap picks.

From what I have heard the only ones that are kinda traps are the Dwarves because they're easymode, the undead tomb kings because they are so different and vampires because they're all magic in comparison.

I just switched my surians to temple guards and holy shit they're good!
And the Salamanders, so mobile for a ranged unit that size!

I was inspired by stuff and wrote a short story. About 3.5k words.

Rereading it, ended up revising it to 10k

Rereading that, ended up at 15k.

This is why I don't write often. That and the lack of skills.

Dwarves are deceptive. They're very strong baseline, but take forever to access the breadth of their arsenal. And they need that to not get dunked in as soon as armor piercing, monsters, and magic becomes widespread. Which is like...turn 10 depending on your difficulty.

The usual safe plan is to take their starting province and bunker down, literally, and waiting for growth and tech, while enemies break themselves on your walls. And then even once you're situated, the old/new tech has very different requirements. You can't run a gunpowder army, at all, unless you know how to work line of sight and terrain. I've lost entire high tier dwarf field armies because of bad maps.

Tomb Kings are pretty fun. There's not many traps, no upkeep, slow pace, decent magic. Only thing to ever remember is to work on the unit caps or get overwhelmed because chaff can't hold a line.

VC are a mess. Rough position, strongest magic lores, great heroes, cool unlock system, but the way it plays, at least for me, is clunky. Maybe I'm doing it wrong.

Tough lizard, they are! The Ancient Salamander was way more terrifying at launch too. The hunting packs work good. The Trogs are fucking vicious in the AI hands, haven't tried them myselfs. Skink Priests, once they get their last mount, are ridiculous. Such a fun faction.

For the longest time, I thought those sites that paid you $.50 to spend 20 minutes doing a survey were a waste of time.

Then I discovered I could do one in about 10 minutes, and a few day adds up real fast to getting Popeyes delivered, entirely outside my usual budget. Sitting here, reading shit too fast and clicking buttons, as I normally do, had given me cheap fried chicken.

This is a dangerous thing to have in America.

But more seriously, it is bleak out there for safe investments. At least on my low level of financial literacy. Interest bearing accounts, CDs, the rate is less than worthless. I think the finest, double super platinum account at my bank had a yearly yield of .05%, and yes that's a decimal point. Gotta gamble it on the indexes and stocks and stuff, with this inflation, or it's actively rotting value. Filling out some surveys for a pittance has a better yield than a savings account, aaaaaah.

On the plus side, crypto is surging today for some reason.

Finally made more progress in Pathfinder: Kingmaker over the weekend. I finished the troll invasion and what I assume is a good percentage of the Act 2 sidequests. I went ahead and looked up a bunch of strategy whatnot because realistically this is probably not a game I will play again any time soon so I want to optimize story outcomes this time around. I can't find anything about the other endings besides that one in any detail. Is getting a "good" ending utterly contingent on that or can you get a suboptimal but still fine one with competent kingdom management and doing all your companions' sidequests and such?

Yeah, there are quite a lot of variations, although most of them are more for the companion characters and overall how your kingdoms standing is at the end. However, how you end up can be quite varied as well.

Since you are spoiled to the secret ending, here are my thoughts on it:
