Finally bothered to sort and roll 8 years worth of coins. Came out to $142, my estimate was $145. The pennies in particular, 5 rolls @ $.50 each, were quite literally not worth my time to do.

Upon further review, albeit this is a coconut liqueur, it's not quite so bad. Possibly to blame for the pulsing, searing headache I had all day, granted, but not bad. Though my intentions was to buy schnapps, I couldn't find it for the life of me. Whole shelf of liqueurs, flavored vodkas, not a single schnapps. Settled on rum, because it's been a long time. 9 years or so, only thing I'd drink then was Roman Cokes (rum and Coke).

Read an interesting observation today. It points out that crazy people have very structured, logical reasons that they believe the entire intelligence system is out to get them, or they're being gang-stalked, or that aliens stuck a probe up their ass. It all makes sense, but in a narrow box of knowledge. Reality is a bigger box. If you enter their box, you would have to agree with them, and vice-versa.

I'd never thought of it in those terms, but it makes sense. Being paranoid to that degree, or delusional to that degree, and so on, doesn't mean your actually ability to logically connect thoughts together is retarded (though it can be).

_Is_ the most logical way usually the most sensible way to complete an action? I would agree, but only if we make a stark divide between naturalistically logical and rationally logical. Either work, but we, uniquely, recognize the difference. Your dog does not. All animals, as far as we can tell, operate entirely off the former. Humans do both, and the point the author was making that those of with specific kinds of mental illness, still do, but in a smaller box.

So if your dog, you, me (the madman in this example), and a genius all hear a dinner bell, we all expect to come to the table and find dinner there or shortly arriving. It's not there. Your dog then looks confused, looks to us to provide food, or goes to check its food bowl. Its logical box is very small, if food is not provided, and cannot be immediately detected, it does not exist. You might question whoever rang the bell, check the kitchen, order delivery, start cooking, or otherwise make use of your much larger logical box. I, being between you and the dog, will become paranoid. The food is supposed to be here when the bell rings, it is not, there is a conscious action (the bell) and a conscious duplicity (no food), and now everything is suspect. Though I can still cook or order delivery, just like you, because of my madness, my box is smaller, I now treat all food as suspect, it may poisoned, or some experiment is at play. Like the dog, I don't eat, though I'm of equal logical capability to you. Then the genius, he produces a fountain pen, a bottle of tea, and a lighter, and performs chemistry to make the tablecloth nutritionally edible, and he eats immediately.

Then the author goes from there to make a point about certain philosophical beliefs, but I'll leave that for the other topic, heh.

From the level of evolved response, pretty much all nature cares about is replicating genes. So the "lower" down the totem poll of conscious control over its actions a lifeform is the more you would expect it would mindlessly comply with the evolutionary impulse to replicate its genes even if that leads to its suffering or death or the overpopulation of the environment or whatever.

The question is whether or not there is a discrete human thing called "logic" that allows us to circumvent our biological wiring and point ourselves at goals we choose (hopefully because they are more sensible than what our base impulses are pushing us to do) or if we just have a very elaborate and sophisticated evolved response that feels like "logic" even though we are really just doing what our impulses want and rationalizing after the fact.

I think the answer is both but that the bulk of what humans do is following impulses followed by rationalizing. Most "logic" is really just rationalizing. That is what the madman is doing in your dinner-bell example. He jumps to the conclusion that there is a conspiracy and then he goes looking for evidence to support his conclusion. He does not look around impassively seeking evidence and then base his conclusion on what evidence he finds.

We are *super* at rationalizing. The smarter you are, the better you are at it in fact which is why many of the most partisan people are actually really smart. A smart person who desperately wants to believe something will be able to come up with all the best reasons for believing it, but it doesn't make what they are doing any more "rational" than the madman or dumb person talking about microchips and aliens. Either way, they make their decision and *then* they find the evidence.

It's not impossible to short circuit this impulse, but it's really hard and most people don't even realize they are doing it. The process feels like they are thinking logically even when they are not.

I'm currently at 160lbs right now on my way from 173 to 153. Dieting mostly, and that's with a lower case 'd'. Oatmeal is a great breakfast, nuts and raisins/dried fruit a great snack, egg white omelets with vegetables and lean meat a great lunch and a single plate of dinner and no food after 8pm is a great way to end the day for me.

The other part is the exercise. I've made a habit of walking my dog for 40 minutes every morning I'm able to. It gets her out while also making it easier to 'take care of business' as it's easier on grass than on my patio. It's such a habit now that I don't think about needing to do it, but rather when I'm going to, a point that I desperately NEEDED to get to, because it's no longer a chore, it's a part of my day. Lately I've started adding evening walks to that, another thing I've always wanted to do. She's looking great too. Now I just added sprinting to it. It's only 5 minutes worth, but I do it after my walk, so I'm already warmed up and got all the right clothes on and am ready to go, just got to do it. Did my third set today after a 2 day break from the weekend, which is a good thing because it's hard to start back up after a break. I think I can keep this up. I know some form of intense cardio will help me get to 153, my diet alone won't take me there.

Peak of hurricane season. Looks like two storms are gonna be in the Gulf in the next couple of weeks. Not gonna lie. Houston kinda sucks. I'm certainly not here for the fine weather.

This is a nontrival life goal for me. I want to live on a hill somewhere that gets enough rain to not have water shortages that isn't on a fault line and isn't within 200 miles of killer hurricanes that isn't freezing cold in winter.

The problem is the places that match this description in the USA are like...northern Alabama and the like. Arkansas sounds nice.
