Re: Films and TV (Untagged spoilers)
So early reviews of the live action Cowboy BeBop are out and thei're not... ALL negative... but many of them are very "Mehh" and "This looks very cheap" and "It pales in comparision to the anime". Tho apparently the actors did their best with what they were given, especially Cho as Spike.
We'll see what the the public says, there's waaay too much bias and disconnect for me to trust most critics these days. But so long as it's not... infuriatingly bad, I guess it's fine. Especially if it makes people curious to watch the original anime, instead.

Alright, Arcane definitely was the best entertainment I've seen all year. Holy shit, the voice acting, the characters, the story, the animation, the music. Glorious.

Yes! Let's hope it's more of a sequel to Chronicles, instead of another Pitch Black retread.

Yoo, so the idea is that Spidey is trying to save the villains, instead of sending them back to their world to die? That's pretty cool, and absolutely something he'd do. I'm onboard!
Also good to see some more Riddick. Wasn't a fan of Chronicles but I did love Pitch Black and if they can find a good balance between those two...

Just how have these people manage to get money for this and all this other ST stuff, last I checked no one wanted to have anything to do with it?
Hell they barely had money to finish Season 3.

Paramount is run by idiots, and they decided that trying to course correct the current stuff was less expensive and risque than starting over. So they renewed Kurtzmann and Bad Robot's deal, and we're stuck with them for other 4-5 years.

well considering that the reboot movie came out in 2009 and with this contract renewal maybe they are hoping that a new fandom have grown up and is nostalgic for this time line, kinda like how our generation also have our nostalgic stuff for not great written stuff.
So trying for the long game, but considering that no one is buying the toys and not many people talk about this new ST outside of how bad the written and execution generally is, it is probably not going to work unless the new generation have really poor taste.

I know I already fan-girled all over Arcane last week, but I gotta do it again. What an incredible, amazing show. That it came out of absolutely nowhere (for a non-LOL fan) also is incredible. This show should set the standard which all future animated shows aspire to, but I think, just like with The Witcher 3, the industry will fail to meet its standard for years to come.
Re: Films and TV (Untagged spoilers)
Just started watching the Wheel. Only 5 minutes in and already getting supreme "meh" vibes from it. It has the same problem that most fantasy TV series have which is that it *really,* desperately wants to be Lord of the Rings and isn't. I'm sorry, random screenwriter, whoever you are, you can't write using epic language like Tolkien was was literally a professor who spent his time reading, translating, and writing about old epics. When you try to write something like this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=POdknqszMDY
you just end up sounding like a doofus. Likewise, when you feel the need to put a mountain range or a majestic waterfall in every scene that contains nothing more important than someone picking their nose. It's like they get so obsessed with trying to prove how they are the new Lord of the Rings that they won't just chill and show you whatever thing they are making now on its own merits.
I'll keep going at least through the first season probably, but it's looking meh at the moment.

That's the general response, from what I've seen. It's not just you.
Doesn't bode too well for the LotR show, if the best Amazon can do is bargain bin LotR.

I gave it a try and stopped because I was...not in the mood. It's not criticism, it's just that sometimes I feel like watching cartoons, and sometimes I feel like watching TV series, but Arcane feels like a TV series (and the 40 min eps don't help - is there another animated show like this?). Also I expected something more light-hearted from LoL.
But it does look promising, despite me knowing absolutely zilch about this universe. I'll try it again, knowing mostly what to expect.

That one is such a flawed idea at base that I'll be genuinely surprised if they even manage "meh" with it. I wrote that off a long time ago and ceased thinking about it so if it doesn't end up sucking it will just be a pleasant surprise.
I did watch the Green Knight and enjoyed it. It's very weird and obviously indie but it was good nonetheless.

I mean they wanted the LotR show to be like Game of thrones, at least before season 8 came out and well pissed everyone off so no one likes the show anymore.
of course I'm sure they have already hired some diversity token characters and have some token gay people so once the criticism come they use the usual Hollywood excuses for the poor writing and what not.

Yeah, like thei're basically just basing it on the Fall of Numenòr bits from the Silmarillion so thei're using a few chapters of a book made from a pile of notes, after the author was long dead. Even if we ignore all the current year problems with big Hollywood productions, it just feels like an awful idea.
If they wanted to do a Middle Earth show or miniseries, they could have done the tale of Beren and Luthien, that is more flashed out and still has characters like Sauron and Galadriel in it. But then they couldn't have slapped the Lord of the Rings label on it...

They already said there's gonna be black hobbits, yes. The excuse is that there's a blink and you'll miss it mention of a clan of hobbits that has "slightly darker skin" than the others in the books. Haven't re-read LotR in over a decade, so I'm not gonna pretend I know for sure.
Re: Films and TV (Untagged spoilers)
I saw Ghostbusters Afterlife, and it’s an imperfect but very sincere love letter both for the IP and to the fans. It’s a fun movie, but it is a movie that stumbles in a few places and doesn't always stick the landing it wants to. The film lacks the original’s pacing and wit but it does have a lot of heart as its central themes are about family and legacy. It’s a passing the torch kind of story, and it does manage to do so in a way that respects and honors what came before while also building a new future. It's pushing hard on that nostalgia button with all the fanservice and repeating elements, but I think it manages to not fall in and rises above the soulless, lazy corporate crap pit it could have easily fallen into and a good chunk of its fanservice is earned. I can certainly understand they wanted to play it safe to ensure a success and re-energize the franchise before they try some new things if it generates enough money to greenlight a sequel. The humor is kind of hit and miss, but it hits more than it misses. There’s a very nice tribute to both Harold Ramis and his character Egon Spengler. Paul Rudd does what you expect him to, but he does it very well. Mckenna Grace who plays our main character Phoebe deserves the praise she's getting for her excellent performance here. So, while it does have its flaws and doesn't break new ground, it's a good time that's worth checking out if you are a Ghostbusters fan. It's the best Ghostbusters film besides the first one, in my humble opinion. Also, be sure to stay around for the 2 end credit sequences.

Re: Films and TV (Untagged spoilers)
Yeah, that. I saw it yesterday and felt pretty much the same, although in my opinion they went too heavy on the nostalgia in the last third of the movie, instead of a well structured resolution.
Re: Films and TV (Untagged spoilers)
Pushed myself to the 30 minutes mark on episode 1 of the Wheel and yeah, no, can't go. I was spending approximately 45 seconds of each minute thinking about how something in a particular scene was dumb or weird rather than watching the show. I've got entirely too much good stuff to read and play that I actually enjoy to waste 8 hours on that.

The bad news: looks like we won't get a Jurassic World Dominion trailer until February
The good news: that JWD prologue that played at IMAX screenings of F9 is going to air on NBC this Tuesday, and probably online not long after
