That said, I hope the rebalanced difficulty is actually thought out. The Hardcore mode in 1/2 Genie was nice and brutal until after Mermaid Falls (the first level), when it became too easy to stock up on healing and avoid damage.

Nope! Been clearing up the side quests in Cyberpunk 2077 before I hit the end game while listening to philosophy debates. Don't actually know where to even find the show, I'm so disconnected from modern media.

Sure, the "eternal grind" focus on parasitic design elements was also another factor which turned me off from the game. I already have a full-time job, don't need a second one in my free time. But at the end, it was the writing which pushed me over the edge.

Arcane is on Netflix. Again, I can't recommend the series highly enough. Find the time, you won't be disappointed.

It was the grind being laid utterly bare. Vanilla, and to a degree Classic, obfuscated that better. Leveling was fundamentally a grind for XP and gold to buy spells. Gear is a grind for bigger numbers to do harder content to get better gear to do bigger numbers. Reputation was a grind to get points to fill a bar a couple times. And the experience worked the best when you really didn't think about like that.

Consider running down into Feralas from Desolace (or up from Thousand Needles) for the first time as Horde. You're going from dry, dead land to a lush forest, you see night elf ruins, you see dragons and giants and bears and yetis, and by the time you get the breadcrumb to go in there, you are _very_ underleveled. Find Camp Mojache, and you'll get a bunch of quests you have no possible way of doing yet, and a few easy ones you can (Grimtotems and first of the muzik drum, I think). Vendors there have the next tier of water/food/ammo, and you don't stay long. Then you come back later, clear more, and get more quests you can't do yet. Then you come back later, and get a group for certain quests. Then you come back later, for Dire Maul and the Orb of Deception. There's the fishing rod quest, some unique catches, there's the wyverns up in the hills for the Kickin' Chimaera Chops, there's the giant zapping bullshit, there's the emerald dragons, and all of it can be summed up in a design document just like Revandreth. It's the same gameplay loops. But the effort to put some meat on the booty made it far more fun to slap my hips against, dawg.

And the writing sucks, which is weird given it's supposed to be done by published authors, instead of RPG nerds.

I don't have Netflix, sadly. Is there any internet alternatives, legal or otherwise?

Well, the problem with MMO's is of course that you cannot always have the experience of leveling through fresh zones, so there needs to be an endgame. However, earlier expansions did that endgame in a way which made it so that you'd get to a point where you could log in a few times a week to do you raids and quest dungeon and otherwise focus on other stuff in your life or play with a twink, if you wanted more of WoW in your life. Nowadays, to push their "engagement metrics", it's all about logging in daily on your main character to do your dailies and having a twink or two seems to be actively discouraged by the design of the game. I think Mists of Pandaria or Warlords of the Draenor were the last expansion where the daily log-ins were there, but not too severe that you needed your entire evening for them. Legion was the start of the parasitic "your super grindy sub-system for this expansion" system, although since the artifact weapons were so cool, nobody minded much. Battle for Azeroth was where it became very obvious what was happening and everybody got tired of it.

The writing in WoW never was exactly up to professional standards, IMO. When the writers tried to foreshadow anything, it was about as subtle as two bricks to your face. I think the best storyline they did in recent years was around Jaina's return to Kul Tiras and her related trauma about Theramore and everyone she lost in her life. But outside of that... all very unsubtle and with often terrible decisions, like letting Sylvanas off the hook. It's a testament to the fall of their storytelling that after two expansions of her doing truly horrible shit, they try to directly redeem her by changing her personality. With Arthas at least they had the decency to give us the satisfaction of bringing him down for good (even if it seems that his spirit will make an appearance in the last patch).

I didn't expect you to not have Netflix. Uh, as for alternatives... a.) go to a friends house and ask him to watch Arcane with you, b.) torrents or other streaming stuff, which is easy to find or c.) suscribe to Netflix, the first month is normally free and you can just unsuscribe at the end of that first month.
