Did some Xmas shopping. Amazon took care of half of that, other online stores and a garden center took care of the other half. The real work begins when I find some salmon and sausages on a deal. I've got to collect enough meats first before I start to smoke it all.
I saw the plan for this vertical wooden structure for growing a lot of potatoes in a relatively small area. Now idea if it'd work, but lacking land, it seems a fun project for a handy person.
Oooh. Smoking your own meats for gifts? How much you want to make some extra for ole' Vol?
magnuskn wrote:Well, the problem with MMO's is of course that you cannot always have the experience of leveling through fresh zones, so there needs to be an endgame.
That too, though I will say, having leveled dozens of characters through the Barrens, there was always a little romance left, even when I know just about where everything is and the best order to do it. Fun fact: For years I had _no_ idea about the harpy quest chain atop the watchtower at Crossroads, or the Wailing Caverns quests in that skull eye above the entrance.
Blizzard sorted started to touch on something, by having the vanilla endgame be fairly loose. You could do MC attunement at 55, you could do UBRS with 15 men, Strat with 10, they were playing with the idea of end game a little, making level cap slightly less important. Obviously they didn't go full in (RIP Shaman tanking, worked up through Dire Maul), but in my head, I can imagine a game where level cap isn't really a target. Sort of like how Legion gated artifact power, where the next level is exponentially more XP, so only super hardcore players would even grind it out until the reduction, or something less miserable. Think there's something to that idea, of having so much content to do at 50, that rushing to 60 would be silly.
Heh, MoP had a _shitton_ of dailies, and I subbed late to it, right around the Timeless Isle, so I had to take the full brunt on the face. WoD wasn't as bad, because there straight up wasn't much content, and the garrisons could be done pretty quick. Legion started to show the bones though, as fun as WQs were initially. BfA, I kept the map _cleared_ of dailies for a good few weeks. But that was about the point I realized I could reconstruct the game's design docs by playing, and Shadowlands continued the trend. To compare to BC, the very first dailies, you had... Skettis, Ogrila, and Netherwing. Then Shattered Sun last, I think. Wrath had a ton more, but they mattered less (Only ever got the epic fishing pole on my DK), started to get annoyed. Cata, eh, barely played it, remember doing the Deepholm dailies as the last thing I did before unsubbing. I think BC had the best balance, where you had the "engagement metric" incentive, but they were less mandatory, had neat rewards/aesthetics, and you always had better stuff to work on.
The writing in WoW never was exactly up to professional standards, IMO.
The writing's always been simple and dumb. But it was fun at least. And I appreciated the effort to add more pathos to these cartoon characters. But then Shadowlands, the writing is so poorly thought out, despite going into some pretty important, lofty places. Garrosh, in his cameo, makes me long for the dumb cartoon stuff I used to dislike. At least I understand him. Orc sad->orc cheered up->orc try to emulate dad->orc thrust into power->orc shaped by power->orc Hitler->Thrall cheats to kill him duel.
Right, I was asking about what streaming/torrent sites are legit anymore. Kisscartoon, Pirate Bay? Anything like that active?

Yeah, pretty much. Well, at least they didn't try to redeem Garrosh, that would have been even more unbearable.
Vol wrote:Right, I was asking about what streaming/torrent sites are legit anymore. Kisscartoon, Pirate Bay? Anything like that active?
Uh, I'll be honest, I haven't torrented anything outside of anime (where nyaa.si still works fine) for a long time. ^^ I think the best I can do is give you a link to the Torrentz2 proxy site, https://torrents-proxy.com/torrentz2/ . Torrentz2 is an aggregator where you can get links for different functioning torrent sites. Use the first proxy, then type in Arcane in the search bar, sort by date and look which of the torrents still has peers. The stuff they say about needing an VPN to use it is not correct, although it probably can't hurt, depending on where you live. I'm not that keen to get a letter by some IP attorney, which is a pretty common occurance in Germany.
Seriously, get a free month of Netflix, it literally costs nothing and you can unsuscribe once you've had your fill of shows you want to watch. There's tons of other good stuff there as well, like The Witcher TV show, which gets a second season this month.

Speaking of MMOs and writing, I've been spending my (non-working) time of the last four days on FF14 Endwalker - admittedly, some time has been spent in queue to log in because holy crap there's a lot of people online.
I'm about halfway through the story - just hit level 86 quests, while they range from 80 to 90. It's glorious so far. The writing and the staging hypes the fuck out of all dungeons and trials. And even though I haven't played FF4, which is the target of the main homages of this expac, I am having a blast. Although granted I did play FFX and got the opportunity to fight against...

My garden space, besides having the downsides of being very small and on the second floor, has another major downside. It gets very little sun in the winter. Maybe four hours of direct sunlight. So I grow leafy greens this time of year that don't really need full, direct sunlight to thrive. Kales and tatsoi and mustards and chards. An Idea I thought up of right now was to string up ten or twelve milk gallon jugs and plant in them. An opening is made opposite the handle so you can have a big space for them to grow out AND you can handle them and string them up while making holes on the bottom so they can drip and put a catch bucket underneath them. You string them up on one rope that goes from the floor to as high as you can make them. Then they just hang there in the air and you use up vertical space.
I have only one area I could make that somewhat work, but it would really shine if I had a sunny spot to put them in. Hours of direct sunlight is important people!
On to the fish, one whole smoked salmon fillet that's shipped cold storage to Jersey? Damn, I'd love to do that for you but...$200 UPS next day!? or $30 by ground, but that's a week long and it won't last that long.
It might be cheaper to get a plane ticket and have it fresh at my place. You can have as much as you like while enjoying the view of our glorious brown, dry mountains.

That's clever. My Achille's heel in programming was trying to optimize everything well before I needed to, so maximizing growth with heavily finite space speaks to me, heh. Would they be heavy enough, laden, to remain stable during winds and storms?

Ouch, bit rich for my blood. There's a reason I eat more processed meat than fresh, and it isn't for the flavor or nutrition.
Heh, I was (wistfully) looking down the topic list the other at the aborted LV trip. Hasn't been better since then. Though I suppose "only" losing 25% of my savings each of these corona years makes me somewhat fortunate. But if I can ever have a solid work year again, no financial catastrophes or droughts, I'll come hang out with any of you (in America) who wants to put up with me for a few days.

Ugh, I just checked and it seems the 30 day free trial isn't being offered anymore, which wasn't the case when I got Netflix in 2019.
Well, now I feel stupid. But, depending if you want to spend the money for a month (which shouldn't be more than equivalent of 9 Euros), yes, you can get it on your PC. It's how I watch Netflix and all other stuff, although of course I got 38'' ultra-wide monitors. Still works well on smaller monitors, though.

Yeah, a month's cost to take a peak is no big deal. Thankfully a surprise job came in, so I can justify not being a miser.
Speaking of, was talking to my grandma, and her yearly newspaper subscription came up. First, they tried to dupe her into a monthly payment month, $36/m, then they tried to sell her the yearly model at $275 when she called them out on it. Managed to argue it down to $200, but for a rag that's mostly a compilation of other paper, with far fewer subscribers than ever, that's a ballsy ask. Meanwhile my aunt was seeing papers for sale for _$5_ in stores.

Great! I'll be very interested to hear your opinion about Arcane!
In order of quality, that'd be then Arcane, Cobra Kai, Castlevania, She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, The Witcher, The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf and then all the rest I listed in any order. And of course there are literally hundreds of other series which might be good and I haven't seen there.

Coors Banquet isn't that bad, though, thank you marketing. But I'll take your opinions under due consideration, as I enter the normie-sphere.

Same with her cable and phone service, it's ridiculously overpriced compared to internet + a smart phone, but she's too old to learn that stuff. It's despicable, in a way, to gouge the elderly to sustain obsolete businesses.

Fresh smoked salmon is relatively cheap compared to packaged. You can get 6oz for $8-$20 premade or you can smoke a fillet for as much you can fill your smoker or weber grill. I can spend $200 filling my smoker up if I didn't care about the price. That's eight decent sized 3lb fillets. But I prefer to get salmon on a steal, anything in the $5-$7 per lb range.
Probably intended for the food thread, but if you want to make a foux smoked salmon then put your grill on very low, throw in some mild wood, like apple or maple and put a salmon fillet on the grill and cook until the flesh starts to come apart freely with a fork. It's smoky, it's moist and if you love it then you'll venture into making it more and more. That's how I got into it and now it's my specialty. I never have to buy it.

Season two and three are very good as well, although the cheese factor goes up considerably in some areas. ^^
