I beat The Outer Worlds. I was satisfied with the ending I got, but can see how many variables probably exist.

Some Thoughts:

It's very good.

People are far too quick to say that this is a 'Bethesda game'. It really isn't. It's in first person, but it is far far closer to a Bioware game.

It suffers from obsidian game syndrome near the end. Where you can tell they ran out of time, and tried in the last minute to tie everything together. I wonder what this game would have been like had Microsoft not bought them, and offered a last influx of money. I'm guessing a much less polished experience.

The party members are all cool... which is a shame, because they are extremely underutilized. Sometimes they comment on what you do, sometimes they are stoic, despite some SERIOUS shit being revealed. They really needed to give them more content.

Also romance options should have been a thing. Ellie is a delight and I wanted to romance her.

This game feels like an incredible start to a series. I hope to hell that Obsidian or Microsoft owns the rights and not 2K. There should absolutely be more Outer Worlds games. This time with Microsoft money behind them from the start of development.

I do remember something about Obsidian saying it's up to Microsoft if they are going to make a sequel, but they would love to should they get the chance so I think it's safe to say Obsidian owns the rights and since Microsoft owns Obsidian well it's safe to say that we'll see a sequel as long as the game sold well.

It sort of occurred to me that since Microsoft bought inXile, they now own the Wasteland IP. And they now own Obsidian who made Fallout: New Vegas, which a lot of people think is better than any Bethesda Fallout game. That really doesn't seem like a coincidence.

Also, I am finally playing Deadire in my grand tradition of "play X multiple years after it's relevant." I had to resort to stupid shenanigans of manual fan control among other things to keep it from cooking my CPU though. It hardly touches my GPU, which makes me think they just assumed it would be running on laptops that didn't have them or something and thus didn't bother to even try to optimize for that.

Other than the terrible optimization, I've been enjoying it tremendously. It corrects every major gameplay problem that PoE had and the characters, setting, and plot are consistently more interesting (and less preachy which is nice). I only have minor, quibbling complaints. I could do without the weird open world ship sailing mechanic, but considering I've only spent maybe 10% of my time doing it and the other 90% is good, honest, meaty RPG content, it's not really causing a problem.

They did several things which you don't see in RPGs much which I particularly appreciated. One is that your companions help you make dialogue and special event checks. So if, say, my bluff score is terrible but somebody in my party has a high bluff, I have a reduced but still decent chance of making the check. Since they are intentionally stingy with points to distribute for skills, it means you *must* rely on your companions if you want to be good at more than a couple of things.

The other is that they explicitly track relationships between party members. So the companions approve or disapprove of what the PC is doing, but they also have tracking for all the other people in the group. This doesn't really actually do anything so far as I can tell because some people are topped out on "dislike" and no fights have started. Maybe they both have to be topped out. Even if it does nothing, it's a interesting mechanic to be able to actually see.

I could go on at length but the improvements are really across the board:

They mostly got rid of the rest mechanic which they never implemented right. They either needed to make it work like IE game or just get rid of it and they opted for the later. Thus abilities are now "per encounter" and not "per rest." They mostly ditched the stupid grimoire spell system. They eased up a little on letting you cast spells before encounters.

It does mean the game is substantially easier, but considering the hardness of the first was in mostly bullshit, irritating ways, I didn't feel like much was lost by this.

Microsoft have bought a lot of studios, a lot of people assume it so they can bring more exclusive games to the new Xbox, which the current Xbox have been lacking this generation to say the least.

So the Xbox could become the winner next generation, it will depend on Sony if they are going to screw up this next generation much like Microsoft did just before this one and basically cost them a lot.

And I'm basically saying this because Sony have been going on a bit of censoring spread with games going on their console (nudity especially), as an example Devil may cry 5 a butt crack got censored (it did later get patched out because of fan backlash) and that worry some considering their competition don't (at least not as much) and it seems to be a bit of a power struggle going in the company at the moment as some important people have left recently which is odd.

Damn, I just got back from two days at a game sound convention where I was going to brag about hanging out with Halo composer Marty O'donnell for a few minutes, but now there's a huge fire in my city again.

Here's the story. It's a story about how quickly one can go from utterly down and pathetic to feeling up and happy with the world inside of 10 minutes.

I was delivering for Instacart in a gated community where the roads were narrow, there were no sidewalks and there was two feet of grass before the sides of the houses start. I passed the house on my left and needed to turn around so I can park in front of it. Well the road turned right and right as I turned right a HUGE delivery truck was right there and turning left. The only way I could make room to not hit him was to pull to the side of the road. And yeah, with narrow streets and no sidewalks you end up on the grass. Well I heard a god awful noise on my right side and that little yellow bush ended up being a fucking fire hydrant. I was so pissed off.

So I made my delivery and right before I leave I tell the lady that she has a nice car. She says she's selling it and I say that I'd be interested in her right front door. She asked why and I told her to come out and I'll show her. So I pointed at my car which coincidentally is the same make, model and color as her own car. I then told her about my stupid hydrant collision and she pointed at her left passenger door that was messed up. Needless to say we shared stories for about 10 minutes of all the crap that's happened to our cars. Then she asked if she could sit in my car to compare them. She'd never seen a manual transmission in this type of car and I showed her how the head rests work and all sorts of stuff. Anyway, we laughed and bonded and even hugged before saying goodbye. I felt so much better about my little scratch. I have over 130,000 miles on my car, so it's not that big of a deal. Also it felt good to connect with someone. She taught me to joy of being open minded and the power of being curious about others. Imagine how terrible a day it would have been if she was pissy and cold and had no joy in life to share with others. Thank you strange lady.

Any way, I bought the paint a few days ago, so we'll see if it can be done when the fires calm down.

Much to my surprise, I actually had a lot of trick-or-treaters this year. I almost didn't buy any candy this time; lucky for the little squirts I changed my mind at the last minute. Best costume I saw was a kid dressed up as Optimus Prime. It was very elaborate and well-put together.

My folks and sisters reported higher than usual turnouts as well. I guess Halloween's making a comeback in my neck of the woods.

I was big in D2 for a while, so I'm mildly interested.

Shadowlands: Eh. I like Sylvanas as the proper evil part of the Horde, less so when she's fucking soloing the Lich King and tearing up the gateway to Deathland somehow. How the fuck is the Helm of Control that powerful? We killed all the people who made it and the guy who wore it, years ago.

Plus the level squish from 120 to 50. Need to hear the features. If I can side with Death, maybe.

OW2: Leaks were right. I'm on board. Got a laugh out of how there's 1 ethnic French person in Paris. I don't care for the PVE now, but hey, if they give due attention in this thing, I'll give it a shot. Seems nice.
